This month's deer management video with Chris Rogers was filmed back in April, right at the start of the roe buck season. Chris heads out in search of roe and muntjac on an early morning, and comes back with slightly more than we bargained for!
As a professional deer manager, it is Chris's full-time job to keep the deer numbers down on the estate, and muntjac in particular are always on the menu as they are notoriously tricky to hunt, especially once the crops and cover get higher over the warmer months. As such, if Chris sees a shootable animal, he will usually take the opportunity to cull it.
When it comes to roe deer management, as well as reducing the numbers and thus reducing damage, the health of the herd and quality of the animals it produces is important, especially in relation to Chris's client stalkers, many of whom prefer to shoot a good sized buck. This video is a perfect example of selective deer management, carried out with poise and skill. Enjoy.

Nice bit of staking Chris. I like watching your videos as I get to see some of the English countryside. Should explain, I'm an English Expat now living in NZ, but miss the rural UK. I left the UK over 35 years ago and your deer population has exploded since then. I poached a small Roe deer off the Packington estate when I was a teenager shooting it with a solid slug out of my 410 lol. The only deer I come across now a days are Reds and Fallow. I prefer the Fallow because they are smaller and easier to get out. Our NZ hunting blocks are a lot more rugged, but are accessible by the general public like myself, but not by vehicles though. keep up with making these great videos. THANX.

Nice video. I'm a hunter from Germany. I'll agreed with the lead bullet the animals drop most of the time on the spot. But time is changing everything so we'll also have deal with the new rules in the Netherlands and Germany and it works but we have to change the angle to shoot and that makes a big difference. Another great episode Chris. Thank you. Is there are chance that in a future episode you could explain how you age roe bucks without looking at their teeth. I think that it would be a good education piece for those just starting out, that's all.

We can maybe have a look at the basics of what to look for but you have to bear in mind that general antlers size and shape will vary greatly around the country so what's a certain age for us may present differently in other areas.

Hi John, difficult to say as it depends what departments of the wider estate you are talking about. Ita more about balancing the population with farm and habitat interests and still having a healthy population to cull with clients, therefore helping to justify my employment costs to the estate.

I’m not being funny but this non toxic ammo debacle needs sorting asap. Not one single animal dropped into its shadow. Absolutely terrible from a .243 on such small deer. I use a .222 on Munties and scotch roe. A 50 grain lead bullet and non one yet as taken more that a single step. No disrespect to Chris at all but this needs to stop not gain more momentum, lead free bullets do not work.

Hi Buck, thanks for the commmet. There is no doubt in my mind that lead core bullets put animals down on the ground quicker than copper and as someone who has shot lead bullets for 20 years it has been an adjustment to get used to shot reactions with copper. However, I do think we need to persist with copper from a PR perspective and it still kills the animals well within Best Practice guideline timings. Our gamedelaer also prefers, and will probably only take copper shot deer in the future. However, I still say to clients, If you are consuming the deer you shoot, stick to lead.
