Seriously. When I read those panels, I was yelling "KARKAT WHAT ARE YOU DOING ALL YOUR FRIENDS ARE BEING KILLED BY A LONELY HIPSTER" And then Karkats face. And then I practically fell on the floor laughing because I realized I had the exact same look on my face.

Maybe I never felt angery towards Eridan because I was just waiting the moment he would finally snap on the people who shitted on him by default. I was more surprised about him destroying the orb/killing Kanaya since he actually was ok with them both literally seconds before the violent spree

I believe Eridan did go Grimdark (If only for a moment). To go Grimdark, as far as my understanding goes, and in relation to SBURB, is the rejection and/or reversal of one's role (That is class and/or aspect). Eridan is the Prince of Hope, a Destroyer of Hope. The aspects go as follows: Space-Time Breath-Blood Light-Void Life-Doom Mind-Heart Hope-Rage Now, if a Hope player gives in to rage, as in Eridan's case, would they not go Grimdark as Rose, a light player, did when she tapped into the void?

I personally love Eridan's character because it's incredibly tragic. No one saw this coming, and yet... In hindsight it makes perfect sense. Eridan never apologized for being a monster No one ever apologized to him for turning him into one: Not Feferi, who had him do her dirty work (i.e. orphaning babies) and dumped him the second she no longer needed him Not Vriska for ghosting him Not Sollux for actively antagonizing him Not Karkat, his one and only friend for ignoring him for about a month Not Kanaya, whose literal job as a sylph is helping people in his state, for granting him unparalleled power just so she didn't have to listen to him and his problems. Eridan is ignored and dismissed by everyone. Even the story ignores him (beta troll with the least appearances). His only face to face interaction throughout Hivebent was a deadly duel with Sollux The signs were there all along, and yet. No one paid enough attention. Maybe he could have been stopped. And that is the most tragic part of it all.

I feel bad to say this, but this is my favorite moment...

Alright, this is why Karkat didn't interfere, plus some other things. Karkat is a mutant blood, correct? It is highly likely from the flash where he shoosh-papped Gamzee that his blood would have been lime if not for the mutation. If that is true, then he would still be a lowblood, or at least a midblood. He still wouldn't stand a chance against Eridan, a highblood. Lowbloods lack physical strength, but show psychic abilities. However, Karkat has shown neither, probably due to his mutation. Eridan would have the upper hand, with his strength along with his wand. Karkat probably didn't fight because, if he died, they would lose a leader, and he believed that without someone holding everyone together, the game would be lost. Kanaya attacked because we all know that she can be violent. In the lowblood-highblood terms that I go by (I don't use midblood), she would only be one caste away from highblood. I don't believe she's shown any psychic abilities, and we know how strong Terezi is from when she beat up Gamzee in ACT 6 (I know that Gamzee didn't fight back at first, but look at the damage she did. Even if Gamzee fought back, like he did after Aranea's powers stopped, Terezi could still probably win due to her wit. She didn't attack Gamzee after he started because she couldn't believe what she had done.) Terezi is only one caste above Kanaya. So imagine the damage Kanaya can do. However, like I said before, Eridan had the upper hand. While Kanaya, Feferi, and Karkat would have to get in close range to attack him, he could simply attack with this long range wand, such as how he did with Sollux, Feferi, and Kanaya. Plus, it is canon that Eridan and Karkat used to vent about feelings. Canonly, Eridan shared more with Karkat than he did Feferi. Eridan attacked Feferi and Kanaya out of self-defense. Karkat did not try to attack him, which is why Eridan basically ignored him. Also, we must not forget that Eridan and Karkat had a pact that was never discussed. That must mean something, right? We all believe that Eridan went Grimdark right? Such as how Rose went grimdark when she lost her mother, and her light was gone. Well, Eridan is a Prince of Hope. He destroys hope. When he said there was no hope left, and he knew when to accept that, it would be possible for him to go grimdark. Since he destroys hope, that is why he blew up the matriorb. That was one of their only canon hopes for prepopulating the trolls. When he destroyed it, the hope was gone. He destroyed the hope, showing that he truly is a Prince of Hope. Sorry, I have more points to cover, but I'll just keep the discussion on this video.

Honestly, how Kanaya managed to kill Eridan is a hundred times more impressive in light of his Pesterquest route. We've always known that highbloods were more physically stronger and durable, but Sollux threw an entire MALL at the airship Eridan was on, and Eridan managed to dig himself out of the rubble with nothing but his pride broken. Now keep that scene in half and re-read the section where Kanaya cuts this guy in half with a chainsaw. I actually doubt Kanaya would be able to kill Eridan before she became a Rainboe Drinker, even if she was able to get a swing of her chainsaw in this scene before she died (unless she hit the neck or something).

There's a difference between acting on impulse and being provoked. Eridan showed no intention of hurting Fef until she charged towards him with a trident. Although Fef was (maybe?) doing what she thought was the best thing it really just got her killed, kind of like how Nepeta probably knew Gamzee would kill her but tried to get some form of revenge anyway.

To be honest this is just enjoyable for me. I mean, sure, my zodiac troll, Feferi, and my favourites were killed, but this also shows everyone has their reason for acting the way they do. In my opinion, Eridan only attacked in self defence, and destroying the matriorb was a cruel move, but does make sense considering his aspect. Princes are destructive classes, and can easily give in to the temptation to destroy most likely, since I’m a Prince myself. Prince of Life to be more exact. As a Prince Of Hope, he either destroys his aspect or destroys through it, and here he destroys hope. Frankly I find that rather cool And we all know how unstable he can be. He’s an ass, that I won’t deny, but he’s cool too! People loves Gamzee despite what he did, but hate Eridan, portraying him as a desperate troll for quadrants, and I just find that insulting. So what if he has quadrant problems? It didn’t change the fact he was still badass as ever! That’s why I love him personally, his personality is rather fun, and he’s cool as heck

Ok so Sollux challenged Eridan do a duel, it was a fair fight, so you can't blame him for blinding Sollux. Then Feferi probably thought Sollux was dead so she charged at him and he killed her in self defense. Then he destroyed the matriorb which I'll admit was a dick move, and then kanaya charged at him, he killed her in self defense. So the only thing you can really blame him for is destroying the matriorb and later on a new matriorb is made. So I don't see why so many people hate Eridan because of this. Eridan killed in self defense, gamzee wasn't in the right state of mind. But what really pisses me off is how no one holds anything against vriska. She paralyzed tavros, then harassed him for being paralyzed, she blinded terezi, she killed aradia and then she kills tavros. The only thing she did that has any justification at all is blinding terezi, this being because she caused vriska to lose an arm and sight in one eye, but still none of that would have happened if she didn't kill aradia. So in conclusion I think that Eridan and gamzee had justification for their actions. But vriska has little to no justification but almost no one holds this against her.

Eridan has poor eyesight because of his glasses. Feferi liked them so he kept his glasses. His plan was to kill Sollux and KO Feferi. Instead, it was the other way around. Don't hate Eridan, blame Feferi for her own death, as she was the one who told Eridan to keep the faulty glasses.

Eridan is partially in the right for this situation I believe. 1. Sollux and Eridan have a duel, which Eridan wins. 2. Feferi charges at Eridan, he kills her in self defense. 3. Eridan destroys the matriorb. 4. Kanaya charges at Eridan. He kills her in self defense 5. Eridan leaves, not harming the remaining trolls. Eridan could have simply hit Feferi's trident or Kanaya's chainsaw, or their legs which would have had less of a fatality rate. He did destroy the matriorb, which was a reasonable reason for Kanaya to get angry but not to kill him. After killing the attackers, he leaves. Not killing Karkat as he did not attack him directly. Overall, I believe Eridan was in the wrong (joining Bec Noir, destroying the matriorb) in some cases, but in the right (Winning the duel, self defense for Feferi and Kanaya) for some cases.

Also, notice how every single one of them attacks him first? yeah.

Adding onto a long conversation about where Eridan stands and if he's truly in the wrong, let me say this: -Yes, Eridan planned to sell out the Trolls to someone he knew couldn't be taken down so easily - Jack. Though, yes, he offered a chance to Feferi to go with him and live. Also, Id like to make it clear that he offered her a chance NOT because of previous romantic/flushed feelings for her (he acknowledges she doesn't want that and accepts it) but most likely because of her royal standing and the potential he sees in her because of it. -Eridan is not a racist. He doesn't judge by human race (seen in his interactions with Rose and him hinting at entering the black quadrant with her) and I have no idea of why people label him as such. Though he does discriminate by caste, showing a dislike of land-dwelling Trolls - but for good reason. He was angry because of them polluting his ocean home with trash. That isn't to say his hate is 100% justified. The unjustified part is visible with Trolls that are very, very low on the Hemospectrum like Sollux is. I back this up by presenting to you his black relationship with Vriska (that he dearly misses), and his statements about how Karkat and Kanaya (a anonymous bloodtype and a mid-class bloodtype) are the two Trolls he'd rather not kill. He even opens up to Karkat and Kanaya more than even when he was Feferi's moirail. -Eridan is not a whiny boy-child. Sure, he gets a little desperate when asking Nepeta, a troll he didn't even know the name of and had no red/romantic feelings for, be his Matesprit. But that was once. He doesn't cry over it and he doesn't cry over his unfortunate relationship status. The one thing he pouts over is being lonely, which even I do occasionally. And please, think back to around his first introduction. Eridan is powerful, devoted, a bit of a history and weapons nerd (but what intelligent, teenage boy isn't?) and he gets reasonably lonely. Also, he does not lament over being rejected Feferi. He accepted it a little bit after he's told she doesn't feel that way. -Eridan attacked Sollux without intentions to kill him, only to show Sollux that he is strong, and not over-estimating himself. This was not self-defense but him showing off and proving a point. And Feferi most likely attacked Eridan because she thought Sollux had died. Eridan didn't meant to kill Feferi, he thinks highly of her and did antagonize over her death later on. But when she attacked him, what he felt was a most likely anger, hurt, and betrayal. The Troll he had been rather kind to is attacking him (and I believe he was unaware that Feferi presumed Sollux dead), so Eridan acted on his emotions without caring about or knowing the consequences of that. So, his response to Feferi's attack wasn't exactly self-defense. He didn't strike to ensure his safety - he wasn't really thinking to do anything at all, like a child throwing a temper tantrum. -Then, Eridan exploded the Matriorb. I assume this was a bout of blind rage he was experiencing, or just finding the motivation to do what he was going to originally (which may be why he wanted in on whatever Kanaya was doing with it). I'm not sure on his motive, though I'm leaning to the first one because of his conversation with Feferi (where he doesn't debunk Feferi's assumptions that Princes aren't a destroyer class, implying he wasn't aware of it and wasn't knowingly living up to his Classpect). Anyway, Kanaya is rightfully angry and attacks. Eridan, in that angry, hurt, mind-muddled state of his, straight-up killed Kanaya. The one land-dweller he outright said he'd never kill. This kind of confirms he wasn't in his right mind, as he really meant those words. So, by the way, the "Eridan is not a whiny child" is actually relevant. It clears up a bit of his actual, NOT-manufactured-by-the-fandom/Tumblr personality. Anyway, here is some Eridan word vomit. Enjoy and make your decisions.

I don’t get why people claim Eridan killed Feferi and Kanaya because of romantic rejection. He killed them because they were trying to attack him (albeit the reason why is because he wanted to betray them and he knocked out Sollux because he was trying to stop him). He doesn’t hurt Karkat, who he totally could have since Karkat was just standing there unarmed. Karkat outright rejected his red advances in the past, as seen in a memo. But Eridan doesn’t hurt Karkat. I mean, you can hate Eridan all you want. But saying he killed because he was jealous/rejected is false. Eridan killed them because they attacked him.

lol everyone in the comments trying to defend Eridan by claiming self-defense. Listen up: 1. Eridan purposely aggravated and antagonised Sollux, manipulating him into a rematch, unsatisfied with the results of their previous battle and wallowing in self-pity over the fact that Feferi turned down his flushed feelings and eventually found an interest in Sollux instead. 1a. Feferi isn't at fault for “emotionally damaging” poor fish Hitler. She truly wasn't satisfied with their moirallegiance and rightly refused his red advances, being honest and as gentle as possible when expressing her disinterest. It's not right in the real world for a man to lothe and murder a woman for refusing to date him, same rule applies to horned alien children. 2. Feferi did attack Eridan, but with GOOD CAUSE! She, possibly, believed that he had killed Sollux over his petty bullshit, and even if she knew he'd only been knocked unconscious, she'd still be reasonably pissed that he walked over to the horn pile looking for a fight. He didn't have to kill her to defend himself. And it wasn't accidental, he had no intention of letting her live. Had he simply acted in the moment, he would've likely been shocked by what he'd done, or have shown anything other than grim determination to end her life. 3. Kanaya attacked on account of the fact that he MURDERED SOMEONE IN FRONT OF HER! Again, not self-defense, and, again, not a necessary death. If a killer shoots an officer for trying to apprehend him, we'd classify that as murder, not a defensive action. Kanaya had to put a stop to his rampage and avenge/protect the two he attacked, or, more likely, she was simply prepared to defend herself, considering the fact that her chainsaw was kept in her lipstick at the moment: she wasn't engaging him just yet, just having her weapon at the ready. She was waiting for his next move, but as Eridan is a dick, he destroyed the matriorb to enrage her into action, then killed her. I'm not saying you cannot like Eridan as a character, but you cannot justify his actions or overlook them to claim him as innocent. Jack Noir is one of my favorite characters, the one I found most entertaining. I do not defend his destructive rampages or ignore the lives he took; in fact, the murders he committed in [S] Cascade disgusted me and crushed my very soul. But damn is he a good character and a hilarious grumpy doggo. He has a massive body count, and he's an asshole, but he is a character I enjoy despite that, and if you can look past Eridan’s genocidal dickish tendencies (which kinda in his defense are beyond his control in a way. He was destined to be a lonely sad sack of shit, it's in his blood.) then I am glad you favor him. We have our own opinions, but don't define his actions as something other than flat out, cold blooded, serial murder.

Everyone's trying to justify Eridan's actions. Here's the facts kiddos. He's a kid. He was put in a stressful situation and snapped. It's not his fault, he just wasn't strong enough to deal with being abandoned my his moirail and friends, losing their final reward, and cowering as they wait for Jack to find them. And he may have gone grimdark, but that doesn't change the fact that he _did_ willingly kill Feferi and Kanaya and attempt to kill Sollux, as well as crushing his race's future on a whim. Rationalize it all you want, but that doesn't change his actions.

Re-watch it again. Fef charged at him with her weapon, he hadn't provoked her at all. Kanaya was also thinking about attacking him, and also eventually did. Don't forget that Sollux pretty much bought this on as he was the one to wind Eridan up to this point, and you could blame some of what happened here on Eridan's uncontrollable anger that resulted. He really did want to do his best, he asked Fef to join him in joining Jack because that's what he believed was best - he was just misguided.

As much as I would hate Eridanus, I can't help but agree that he died too soon. In fact, his death would have been more appropriate at the end of the chapter, and that he died because of the Cascade or at the hands of Gamzi. So he would have gotten much more time.

ED wanted Fef to join him. But she wouldn't. He was desperate for her safty and thought that was the only way. His action's aren't justified, but areunderstandable. He opened his heart to someone and as an Aquarius I can say that it's hard to do with our emotional walls. At the end the Prince of Hope had lost hope. And that's the one thing that us Aquarian's need. Hope. Without it we are desperate with no reason left to even live. Wehardly ever adress emotions and when we do we get overwhelemed

AND TO THIS DAY, ERIDAN HAS NEVER FILLED A BUCKET.

I beg to differ. Their personalities are basically their sign. And your personality ties into how you react to things. Karkat's a grumpy cancer, Vriksa stings peope like a Scorpio, Sollux is bipolar, etc. And those personality traits would affect the way you handle things.

I can see why everyone hates him, but you should really try to look into both sides of the story. First, Eridan was dumped by Feferi, one of his closest friends, who was also someone he loved, which left him devastated. Later, when he gets into the medium, no one helps him. No one bothered coming over to his planet because everyone was scared of the angles and him (his fault though because the angels were actually supposed to help him but he was deluded with the fact that they were his enemies.)
