Sikkil Gurucharan teams up with ace violinist L Ramakrishnan in this episode to discuss how they were inspired by the brilliant soundtrack composed by Ludwig Göransson for Chistopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. Two of his tracks, "Can you hear the music" and "Destroyer of Worlds" kindle the thought to play with the scale, rhythm and speed and thus is born a new Pallavi in Gomethakapriya, a rare raga from early 20th century books.
Credits:
Sikkil Gurucharan - Voice, concept, direction
L Ramakrishnan - Violin
Arun Menon - Editing, Artwork and additional keyboard programming
Video team - Kalakendra
Location - Balaganapathy hall, Chennai

The spark that led to this incredibly creative work, the brilliant collaboration of creative minds? the entire creative process with the highly educational unraveling that enhances the appreciation of this all, the miracle and potential of carnatic classical music that has been enriched by artists like you and still expanding… that word leading me to the wonderful lyrics for the pallavi!! Mind boggling! Best of all is the fact that you have kindly shared this with us all!!! Thank you SO MUCH!! Here’s to many more… 🎉❤

Thank you for this wonderful segment. As a scientist I am amazed by your openness and your rigorous curiosity in the experimentation. Above all, your joy in partaking in music was wonderful to behold. Madan Karki's lines were wonderfully spun - wished he wrote a few more. As a writing hobbyist, I usually find it hard to pen words to match musical patterns. But you and Madan Karki showed the way. Here is my small appreciation that sprung from your inspiration. Thank you. I have tried to build on Karki's lead, trying to stay true to the themes of Physics, Oppenheimer and the Gita. First two lines are Madan Karki's verse.

As everyone knows, our raga structure represents each melodic representation separately. That way well organised. Scope for improvisation as you would agree sir is limited. To that extent any similarity visavis any raga the western score might have, though breathtaking, is accidental and therefore standalone as the award itself is named correctly as original score. This is my humble submission.
@SikkilOfficial
@SikkilOfficial 6 месяцев назад
Correct. The similarity is accidental.

Wow.. ♥♥♥♥Listened a few times already. So inspiring. You are genius for deconstructing an emotional piece of music into a simple thattu varisai and building a pallavi in Gomedakapriya. Thank you Gurucharan and L Ramakrishnan. I would like to share a personal anecdote on Gomedakapriya. Hope other readers will enjoy it too. It was in Cleveland Aradhana 2006 or 2007. Srimushnam Raja Rao sir was giving a lecture on how to practice ragas for beginners. In that lecture, he mentioned that as beginners you should practice singing in simple ragams like mohanam, shankarabharanam, kalyani, etc. A beginner should avoid unknown ragams like Kundakakriya, Gomedakapriya and Jamukkala Bhairavi. When he mentioned those 3 made up names (that's what I thought at that time), I was literally rolling in laughter and so were my friends in the audiences. Those 3 raga names stuck in my mind and I never thought that Gomedakapriya is a real ragam. What do you know, almost 20 years later, here is someone explaining it and doing a pallavi on it. Kudos to your music service Gurucharan. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Wonderful interpretation of two of Oppenheimer's film sound tracks and parsing the notes in a Carnatic ragam with varying tempos. The use of 'daatu varsaigal' in Gomethakapriya ragam to reflect the notes in the particular sound track delightfully illustrated the point about the relationship between music and mathematics, when Bohr asked Oppenheimer if he could 'hear the music''.
