I always disliked the S Stock trains for how bulky, clumsy and slow they looked but this changes everything. Here’s to the future of Sub-Surface Underground lines.

they need to increase speed limits in sub surface tunnels I barely see any reaching any higher than 30, and as far as I know, there aren’t any many Sharp bends or changing points on the main part of most subsurface routes.

On the upgraded sections the trains run at 40 mph in places. The tunnels are very old, and there are quite a lot of bends that limits the speed. Also I think they might be worried about vibration from too much speed. The Victorian tunnels may not have been designed for too much stress. We will have to wait and see how the system works once the upgrade is complete.

Oh yeah, I noticed that they were alot quicker in recent times . Like their...really quick. The sound they made was so satisfying, with the new acceleration, it would be nice to have some of the speed limits improved beyond 45mph on certain routes for the s stock with their new acceration rate and all. Network rail should be working to improve power to the electrostars and other trains on third rail tbh. Ain't much changed since the 2000s, trains still stuck with practically 80s AC OHLE acceleration

I work on DC third rail routes and its all about money and budget which is why improving power is a long and tricky process

With the Electrostars that run on 3rd rail, they can accelerate fast but it's down to the driver because I've been on a Class 376 train with the driver accelerating much faster than usual and slowing down a lot later just like a tube train.

I have actually been on the District and Hammersmith & City lines between West Ham and Barking, and I’ve used a GPS speed app to see how fast they are, and both have peaked at 48mph in between stations. I’ve noticed this more between Plaistow and Upton Park, and between Upton Park and East Ham. Between East Ham and Barking was 46mph, maybe due to track curvature in between. The 2009 stock is complete underground and therefore hard to get any signal coverage to record speeds. But the 1996 stock I’ve recorded speed of up to 56mph between Canning Town and West Ham.

@@projectr2451 yeah I use GPS too and I've noticed the same 46mph limit exactly where you spoke about. I need to go on the further path where they get faster. I think I've been on a jubilee line up to 60mph on the western side of its route between Wembley Park and another station.

This is really interesting - i had thought that the S stock sounded slower accelerating than the 2009s. First I'd heard of this news! Have to admit though, the fast accel sounds weird to me on the S - the slower one feels more familiar to me. But if it gets around faster I can't complain

@@bb-3653 I would say the gearing is the same. It has the same VF drive. The speed which it changes from pulse cycle based PWM to pattern based PWM is the same (around 20 mph), and the speed where it switches to the second pattern is the same (around 30mph). If the gearing was different there would be noticeable differences.

@@bb-3653 The sound is made up of motor sound, VF sound, the sound of the train wheels, and the echo characteristics of the train and stations. The S trains is a bigger train with more powerful motors. The motors will sound difference. And the shape of the trains and station make the sound less intense as it is a larger space for the sound to dissipate. The VF sound is pretty much the same. Take a look at my video of the trains in Beijing in China. Some of the trains have Bombardier VF drives. Similar comparison to Diesel Generator vs Electric on the Class 755s. On electric the acceleration is similar to the s7 Stock unlocked (a little bit quicker) and on diesel similar to a 3 car set with less diesel horsepower.

The acceleration of Class 755 is much slower than the S, 2009 and 1992 trains. With national rail trains, the fastest accelerating trains are 379, 387, 395 and 800. which I estimate have a peak acceleration of around 2.5 mph/sec. All other national rail trains have disappointingly slow acceleration. If you compare UK trains to German S bahn systems, German trains accelerate much faster. The fastest accelerating S bahns I have been on are Cologne and Mannheim.

The S stock still sounds slightly different than 2009. The 2009 has a distinct note when starting to move, but the S kind of has a hissing note when starting to move. Does anyone know why the S makes a slightly different sound?

Hope this video stays as it is. I was watching it twice before it got deleted and was going to comment. I quite like the S7 and S8 Stocks and they are very good trains that Bombardier (now Alstom) have manufactured 191 of them (S7 Stocks for Circle, Hammersmith & City, District Lines and the S8 Stocks for the Metropolitan Line).

As I'm posting this comment, the Circle and Hammersmith & City Lines are now fully automated. But does anyone know when district line branches towards Wimbledon, Richmond and Ealing are getting resignalled? Also same with Met Line north of Finchley Road? I would LOVE to see the speeds of an automated Met between Finchley and Wembley and on fast trains especially to Amersham! I know these sections have more difficulty what with it sharing with other lines but would love to know the status or rough timescale 🤔

I think think the s train and 09 train both have the same timing because if you compare the victoria line to the metropolitan line, then it might be the same. That was an s7 it had 7 carriages. 5:30 compared to the victoria line, which has 8 carriages. 4:30. That's why the timing is different.

@@OffTheRailsUK I would say that they are classes of train. They are all very different. I would say the naming convention of "stock" is just a tfl thing about what they call their trains. I wouldn't say that it is any different to a train class. Also some national rail train classes don't make sense. For example some different classes of train are almost identical but are given different classes, such as 375 and the original 377. Also some versions of class of train are completely different within a class number. For example class 377 contains both first and second generation electrostars. The two generations of electrostar are completely different and have few similarities. I would count these as different classes of train.

The most epically fast accelerating train I'm aware of is the BART in San Francisco: peak of nearly 3.5 mph/s.

When I recorded it full power didn't happen between Sloan square and Victoria. Also it didn't happen beyond Temple. They are updating the route fast. Also not all parts of Seltrac have full voltage. Seltrac is an automation system and voltage is from a big square thing called a transformer. While they are upgrading two separate things at the same time, it doesn't automatically mean that both the seltrac and higher voltage will come available at the exact same moment.

Really, all tube stock should be accelerating like a Tesla S Plaid if it is to progress into the modern age. That's 0-60mph in well under 2 seconds.

If it accelerated like that, people standing would fall over and people would be shunted to the ends of the carriage. People in transverse seating would be thrown sideways and people in backwards-facing seating would be thrown out of their seats. Not to mention how ridiculously large the motors and electrical supply equipment would have to be. Even the acceleration on an electric bus (not very aggressive compared to a car) is enough to push unknowing people in transverse seating. So there really is no need for such ridiculously fast acceleration (30mph/sec) and such fast acceleration (30mph/sec) comes with inherent safety concerns.
