Excellent video of the transit. I especially loved the stop-motion or interval-timer you put on the lock views, that was great, and the rest too.

Hi rbarnesy - yes, the Panama Canal Authority requires you to have a licensed advisor aboard for all transits, regardless of size. You also have to pay a buffer fee that you forfeit should you delay their schedule or cause any damage to the locks. See our blog for more info on how to take your own boat through (link is listed above in the video comments). Thanks for watching!

Depends on the size of your boat, but for us it was approximately $850. Unfortunately our agent ripped us off and refused to return our buffer, so we lost another $850 dollers, so don't use Y&J Yachts. But normally it is fairly affordable (considering how much time the crossing saves you!).

There are three locks on each side with a giant lake in the middle. In all it took us just under 24 hours (spending the night in the lake after the first transit).

Just playing catch up, I'm up to date on your latest world tour. I don't remember the BBQ hamburger ritual on the panama transit with the Family.

Great video. I was at the canal way back in 87, what I recall most was the humidity and vultures. I have not read the travel log - did you guys go to Taboga Island ?

Hi MrTinago, we fixed the problem so please visit our site

Pretty cool. I did not know you needed "advisors" for the canal. Is this optional or a boat size thing? I have done a lot of locks in our area including the St-Lawrence seaway and it's pretty much a self done affair.

Wow, that was an awesome video, I just found you and subscribed immediately !!! I intend to watch all of the rest of them right now. My wife and I are leaving Petoskey Michigan on Aug.1st. 2010 and can't wait. You can see some of our 30 day sailing vacation last summer, on my channel. Thanks, Dean

Thanks for all your comments everyone. As a word to the wise, please do not use Y&J Yachts as your agent. They stole our buffer of $850 USD and never paid it back! So much for ethics... Good luck!

Thank you and waiting for your answer.

Shelter Bay! beautiful place, did you get a chance to walk around?
@TheSailingFamily
@TheSailingFamily 7 лет назад
Yes, we loved it there. It was a little isolated, but we used the free shuttle to go into town and shop, get our paperwork done and explore a bit. Although my main memory was how damn hot and humid it was. Glad we had air conditioning on board!

What was the cost to go thur all the locks? plus advisor or any other cost?
@TheSailingFamily
@TheSailingFamily 10 лет назад
Hi Syd, from memory the cost was roughly $1,200 to travel through both sides of the canal for our 38 foot boat, which included the advisor. Unfortunately we hired Yara Mandarin as our Agent but she decided to steal our $1,000 "buffer," which is the fee you submit prior to crossing to cover any damages you might make. So if you go, don't hire an agent and tackle it yourself (it's easy!).
@kenyattaknox5163

What was the buffer and why was it necessary to tack tires to your boat?
@TheSailingFamily
@TheSailingFamily 8 лет назад
Kenyatta Knox Our buffer was roughly $1,200, which was needed to protect the canal for any damage or delay we might cause. Sadly it was not returned despite no damage or delay... The tires are to help protect our boat from the concrete walls, given the intense currents found in the locks. We didn't need them, thankfully, but better safe than sorry (and used tires are cheap!).
