Seth walks through basic engine maintenance with the new owner of Honeymoon. The work is done on a MD2030 Volvo Penta and they change the fuel pre-filter, fuel filter, water impeller, oil filter and check the water strainer. Seth is not a professional mechanic and you should see a professional if you have any questions.

Just an FYI, When a vane is missing off an impeller, you need to track down all the missing pieces to prevent a clog downstream. I really enjoyed your video!!

been watching you for years and now I have a catamaran with this same engine. Helpful video. Thanks! Wish you where still making videos.

So, I just watched every episode of your trip, and I have to say it was better than daytime television.

It had always been our plan to sail from Virginia to Sydney, so once we arrived we sold the boat and flew home. Mission accomplished!

yes, I agree. I lost one in this manner, then found a further 2 from the previous owner stuck at the entrance to the exchanger :-) Lucky I did not get a major blockage and overheat - but great it can accommodate this degree of issue - without failure

Thanks for doing this video. I'm doing my own maintenance on a MD2030 and it was great watching how its done. Cheers!

did you find the lost blade? you can't let it run free in the system

I did not find the lost blade, and in my experience, it must work itself out of the system eventually as we never had a problem with it. Not ideal, and certainly a warning that we should be replacing our impellers more often, but it's very difficult to fish out the blades so we left them as is... Thanks for writing!

The Sailing Family, impeller scraps usually end up in the heat exchanger

We got a little bored after 18 months of beaches, but mostly we loved it! It's not forever. Just for a little while...

Nice and brief video. You need to find tht impeller blade. Also how many liters of oil can you pump out of the engine? Seems downpipe leaves abt 1,5- 2 liters inside. So it is not possible to change the oil completely. So the grits etc always stays inside at the bottom. Do you have a method to flush all the oil inside the bottom of engine?

nice video, but you still need to trace the missing impeller piece

Hi David, if you mean the impeller cap there is a chance it could rust on. Try your best to pry it off and sand down the wall/cap afterward. If you mean the water filter (white basket thingy) then I guess you can replace the entire unit pretty easily and just re-attach the hoses. What sump tube do you mean?

This is what I was going to say. What happened to the impeller vane? Don't you need to find the pieces? I see it wasn't in the filter. Was it in the impeller and you just didn't show us?
@TheSailingFamily
@TheSailingFamily 11 лет назад
Hi Mike/Kelly. Yes, technically we should have tracked down the impeller vane. Being honest, I didn't want to take it apart on our voyage with the fear it wouldn't go back together again. Thankfully I never had any cooling issues so I would question if you really need to take the trouble, but it would be smart to find them if you can.

Very informative but why did you not clean or replace the airfilter!! Last week discovered on my engine that the filtertop was gone and the spiral had fallen out and layd hidden under the engine. So check this part also, clean or replace if needed.
@TheSailingFamily

+Adrian Snoodijk Thanks Adrian, yes, we would have replaced the air filter if it was in poor condition. We should have shown other things to check on the engine as well.

Hi Seth, have you thought about where that broken piece of impeller went into your system, and whether it is going to be plugging a defense to your heat exchanger or perhaps small passageways on the way into the manifold? I would be concerned to look and see where it might have gone because it would probably have gone Downstream perhaps in many pieces after breaking off.
@nwoodman1
@nwoodman1 5 лет назад
Absolutely, typically they report to the HX inlet port. You definitely should find the broken impeller blade as a priority

question... what became of the lost impeller blade? stuck in a line somewhere? hopefully not in the exchanger? i always thought a missing blade could spell trouble for an engine if it was lodged in the exchanger. educate me.
@TheSailingFamily
@TheSailingFamily 8 лет назад
Hey nice guy. Yes, you should go try and find the impeller blade if you can as that could later block water flow through the exchanger. I didn't show how to do that here as I was focusing on regular maintenance, but you are correct that would be the next step. That said, I often found them to have made their way out or to have turned to jelly from the heat, so we never had problems with blades here and there missing. But certainly not the "proper" way to deal with it. Good luck!

It is best to remove the hoses after the impeller and before the heat exchanger cup and blow the dead blades out, if not there remove the rubber cup. I also have an air breather valve along the hose after the impeller, at the high point, and found the blades in there this week.

Do you always keep your diesel in a gas can?
@TheSailingFamily
@TheSailingFamily Год назад
Some spare diesel, yes, but most of the fuel is carried in the yacht's fuel tanks.

Don't you need to bleed the fuel system after change the fuel filter and pre-filter?
@TheSailingFamily
@TheSailingFamily 8 лет назад
Hi Leo. No, you don't, actually. In my experience, the engine would self bleed itself if you did a good enough job filling the fuel filter with diesel. I knew how to bleed it, but it always started up as shown, so we never needed to do so. Maybe a Volvo feature? In either case, it was nice to skip that step. Thanks for watching!
@LeonardoAscenso
@LeonardoAscenso 7 лет назад
Nice! Unfortunately my pre-filter can't be filled like yours. I took 45 minutes to bleed the system with the VP small pump last maintenance :\

this mechanic is charging $380 for an oil change on twin volvo Penta diesel AD31P . does it really cost that much? how much is parts?
@TheSailingFamily
@TheSailingFamily 7 лет назад
Parts are probably $100-150 (for both engines) and his hourly labor rate is about $150/hour. You can save on the labor and do it yourself!
