S&W 686P: "Full Power Option" by Nutnfancy

How could a 7-shot 39.5 oz revolver be a favorite of Nutnfancy?! Two words: Shooting it! To shoot the Smith and Wesson 686 (or in this case the 686 Plus or P) is to love it. Yes it still is a limited capacity revolver that's heavy and a bit bulky. But in certain POUs, as discussed, the weight of this stainless steel 686P is ideal and appropriate. This 4 inch barreled 686P is steady on target with a perfect balance that inspires confidence. My selected POU on this full-sized .357 Magnum combat revolver is primarily (but not limited to!) range use and as a recreational target gun. For me it is a joy to shoot. One reason for this: the amazingly smooth and light double and single action trigger as factory-modified by the Smith and Wesson Performance Center. That makes it fast to shoot and the double action is my preferred firing methodology with this 686P. Add in the typical but still excellent high contrast SW sights, a smooth and wide trigger face, full lugged barrel (great balance), fast and sure ejection of empties (usually), grip cutouts for speed loader use, good Hogue rubber grips, intuitive cylinder release, and excellent accuracy and you can understand my enthusiasm. Also in the review I roll in a pristine 4 inch Colt Python .357 for some interesting comparisons as I cover some their details side by side (two gun reviews in one!). Both are outstanding in most roles but the 686P wins more ergonomic points with me; the Colt Python on wins on absolute cool and exclusisivity. Both guns showed impressive accuracy as we shot them from standing 8 to 20 yds positions. Handloading with improve the results even more. Though chambering the very expensive but extremely capable.357 Magnum, the 686 benefits of course from .38 Special versatility and economy. Shooting steel plates with such loads is high entertainment to be sure. The weight makes firing of full power loads manageable and actually enjoyable. Durability of the 686 series is widely documented and stellar. This 686P is outfitted to near perfection for me as is but one could add in different stocks, some HKS, Maxfire, or Safariland speedloaders, different sights (including optics as each 686 is drilled and tapped for a base underneath rear sight), and any number of holster options for the gun. But as currently outfitted this SW 686P is ready for action and some solid service as a hunting gun, defensive option, or recreational firearm (a good, low recoiling gun to introduce new shooters to centerfire shooting). Its longevity in the Smith and Wesson line is a testament to just how timeless and endearing the 686 is and it shows no signs of losing popularity, even in an auto world!

Im an auto guy but my dad is all for the revolvers. I learned how to shoot using his ruger security six. that gun has had over 30,000 rounds through it and it still shoots like its right out of the box. it is an excellent gun. revolvers will always have a place in my heart and in my gun safe!

I like the fact that a revolver doesn't eject shells everywhere leaving a mess to clean up and in the rare case that a round misfires all you need to do is pull the trigger again! Like Borris the blade says, "If it does not work, you can always hit him with it!" I'd hate to be pistol whipped with a 40oz 686p!

I have a S&W 686 w/ 4inch barrel, and carried it everytime I went backpacking. Never had a problem with it's weight, just had to get a separate belt to put the gun and holster on, as it'd work my pants down over the hike if I attached it to my regular belt. There's no semi-auto I would feel comfortable taking into the wilderness of Montana, but I never felt like I didn't have enough firepower with my .357, not even when being charged by a bull moose.

I only held it in my hand today and it got into my brain. I have not been into revolvers before, but the balance of holding it is addictive, and it has a sense of combat gun to it. I played Half Life where there was a Python that killed all the baddest aliens with one shot - now I have a tendency to want to have it in real life.

it would be nice, but it just cost them too much to make them in the US to the quality level we'd expect. that's the reason they discontinued it in the first place, lot of cost and hand-fitting, and all those US man hours of labor (and the materials) cost too much. Darn shame, but I sadly think it's gone for good.

My dad's a deputy sheriff, and he's carried an old school 686 since 92, once he's retired I'll probably carry it as my duty weapon as well. An out standing weapon, a little heavy but accurate and guarantees a bang when you squeeze the trigger.

I have a 686, a Python, and a Ruger. The 686 is the only 4.2" barrel gun, and is by far my favourite. Its so nice to shoot that I love shooting it! I roll my own ammo, so its very inexpensive to shoot. They Python shoots very well also, but I like the Smith's cylinder release better. Compared to the other two, the Ruger is not quite in the same league but is still a very competent gun.

I finally took your advice and bought a 686 Plus (with a 3"barrel). The longer barrels were nice but the 3 incher won out for me. I'm narrowing in on completing my collection I just need another 357 lever rifle and I'm going to go with a Henry with a steel receiver. Then I'm done, it'll be ammo and holsters from there on out. Thanks Nut'n & crew.

I've had a model 67 stainless K frame .38 for thirty years, an excellent revolver. The 66 was the .357 version (adjustable sights) and did indeed get tired when too many full-house loads went through it. When the 686 came out in the early '80s ( I think), our biggest thrill about it was the full barrel underlug, which aided shot placement and recoil management. And LOOKED COOL! An excellent product, rugged and dependable. And FUN to shoot as Nutn has said.

the revolver has been used as a personal defense weapon for over a hundred years successfully . against bears, enemy bandits, home invaders and criminals as well as during the indian wars and other over seas conflicts as well. it's a good defensive option. six shots in most cases is enough for the threats we see in regular life scenarios as hunters and home defense. if u need more than six shots then ur in over ur head anyway.

I purchased my 686 back in 1991, when hired by the Chicago Police Department. It was only $400. For me, the decision was easy, the stainless steel S&W was the perfect duty gun. No bluing to wear off from pulling it from my holster (which was done a lot as I worked in a very "busy" neighborhood), a four inch barrel which allowed for a quicker holster draw and a full lug to keep it on target. What a gun. 20+ years later and she's still going strong.

Great Video. I'm 55 and was looking to buy a S&W Model 67 since it takes only .38 ammo which is good for my arthritis. However its hard to find a new one which is why I went with the 686. I can load it with .38 and if I ever get the courage I'll try .357 ammo.

jasonjrf There is definitely something special about a old school, all steel handgun. That said, the polymer guns still have a solid place. That sweet all steel 1911 isn't so sweet when it's hanging on your side all day. Polymer guns make carrying a mid to full sized handgun reasonably comfortable. I love my 1911, at the range. When it's time for a carry option, much of the time I opt for a Glock.
@thetobaccoguy1751

jasonjrf Polymer rules the roost for carry. Unless you opt for a snub nosed revolver. The G-19 is a great gun. I don't own one, but my brother in law does. I on the 17 which is it's big brother. The 19 is essentially the same gun with more compact size. I carry a G-30s in .45 acp.

I carried a 586 S&W for several years back in the 90's. It is still the best revolver I've ever owned. As you pointed out, I shot it SO well it just made sense to carry it. The 586/686 also make good hunting handguns as well. With a 6-8" barrel they're great on white-tail sized deer out to 50-60yards.

What I like about my 357 mag is the stopping power of the round and the distance I can hit with it having a 6" barrel. The other thing about the revolver is when you need it in a life threat situation there is no making sure a round is chambered, no making sure the saftey is off no worry about stffing the barrel into the bad guy it will still fire. Great for girls to learn and can shoot a high powered round without too much kick. I like to carry it open out hunting or camping its great for home not so great to conceal unless its cold under a jacket. The reach with a 6" is great for out shooting your friends.

No, not so many... It's all good, but yeah, for home defense, as a "band-aid" firearm, it should perform admirably, whether using specials or the 96% one shot stopper .357's. It WILL get you to your shotgun, IMO. No nonsense, just stop the threat. Everyone should own 1 revolver in case the world goes to shit and you're left with limited options on what to take with you. A .357 revolver and a 9mm glock will see you through most anything.

I had a range officer in 1963 who was THEN 65. (Prohibition era cop) He'd say "it's whomever gets the first 2 or 3 good rounds placed" Most of us are never going to need 15 to 20 rounds (great fun). 6 rounds is good (home, recreation, camp gun) and versatile (38-38 +P - 357). Revolver is great (Ruger GP100 Match Champion). Reload is pretty quick. .357 will do almost anything (beasts, bandits or bulls eyes) 38 +P is great. Ammo is available. Great machine!

I think the main thing you're forgetting about revolvers is they're far more effective as melee weapons due to all the weight and metal, too. I love semi-auto's, but polymer just doesn't stand up in that department. You also don't run the risk of jamming your mag in the firearm and making it unusable with the quickness if someone's able to close the gap on you/multiple assailants.

When you were talking about the 10mm and how people say it will just piss off a bear my response is if it is a glock filled to 16 rounds the only way it would piss the bear off is if there is an afterlife for the bear to be pissed of in. I mean even a 10mm can be rapid fired with little drift. When applied to such a big target it would end quick. I am sure you know that :) just had to vent about the anti knowledge folk that make up myths about guns mostly to make themselves look like a sage lol. great review btw

Thank you, again, NtF for excellent display of visuals & verbal points of interest and discrimination. I have enough 'duh' moments in life, I am very grateful for demonstrative pointers on guns. Bill

My father and I were checking one out at the store the other week and I gave him the abreviated talking points; he is now the proud owner of a 686P! I may have to see about getting it on loan to the WBWP for some extended testing.

I have a 686 pp ( power port) , outstanding gun , I have taken several white tail deer with it , excellent trigger right out of the box.

I know you call it a recreational gun, but I actually edced it for over a year before getting a glock 23. The 686 in 4" is still my go to for the woods or bike in a shoulder rig. And it can be carried in an iwb- I recommend fightNGear's insider model- no printing, even in shorts and a t shirt.

As someone else pointed out, its easier to clean S&W revolvers by removing the screw closest to the barrel on the right hand side of the gun.. Then open the cylinder and slide the crane foward and free of the gun.. It makes cleanup much easier...Buy a set of hollowground gunsmith screwdrivers and apply a dab of blue lock tite to the treads when reassembling.. Dont overtorque.. just snug on that cylinder retention screw.. IMO, the.L frame strikes the perfect balance as a launching pad for 357mag.

Just RE-watched this vid, if someone didnt mention it already around 17:35 you say it's a slight increase of cylinder width but the 686+p is actually the same diameter as the standard 686 6-shot, they re-worked the cylinder setup and were able to configure all the charging holes for the 7-shot in same size, plus the cylinder notches are offset from the charge holes which increases strength since there is more MEAT under the cylinder notches. Love the 686+P, 3", VERY accurate out to range also!

The handgun gods have smiled on us. I have a 4" model too with HiViz sight, G10 grips, and now I'm thinking of the trigger job. No complaint with factory trigger, though. An all steel gun Sam Colt and JM Browning would have liked.

great job as usual. on the way to the range today stopped at gun store for targets and purchased the 686p. it's so popular that they are on backorder and store couldn't give an ETA. those targets cost me $900.

great video. just picked up a 686 6" six shot. It shoots better than I do at this point. only got 50 rounds through it and I am more of a rifle guy so still have a bit of a learning curve. thanks again.

This is a great first gun. You can shoot light .38 specials until you work your way up to magnum loads. The grip frame is the same as the smaller "K" frame and so there is a huge ranges of choices for grips that will allow you to fit the gun to your own hands perfectly. The revolver's simplicity of use also keeps the learning curve pretty flat.

the SW 686 has the edge over the Python since it was produced later and SW had more time to perfect the design. Definitely the push-4wd, angled cylinder latch is a plus and also the large aftermarket for it. The companies Hi-Viz and XS make tritium and neon front sights for the 686.

Have had one of these for many many years the 686 combat running the houge grip, I can keep it in a 4'' group at 50 yards, no joke other than a glock this is the only highpower pistol i have ever shot. I use it for deer hunting you run the hornady hunting loads and you are perfect out to 50 yards......man you can not beat the wheelgun its just perfectly reliable, never once has it failed me. Exactly as you said, my trigger time is on on of these and I show it....5 stars

Nice vid, grew up wth revolvers, mostly Smiths and Rugers. I have a K 22 Masterpiece thats 60 years old. It's still pretty and shoots like the day my grandpa bought it. Like this 686P.
