S2E23 Relocating my honeybees (Dominican Republic)

Matthias is a beekeeper from Argentina and he helped me relocate my bees. We had a very difficult time finding the queen because of the false floor and the additional storage compartment in my boat that had a hole in the wall separating the initial storage compartment. After we relocated the best the first time, I had to take some more serious action and unfortunately, there were some fatalities.

You did the best you could! And with a spatula, rolled up newspaper and duct tape. Bravo! Been keeping bees since 2009, and have seen crazier. Your only other option was to cut the boat open from the inside. As best you can, try to get all the dead, wax and honey out so it doesn't melt into the wood; otherwise, mold, mildew and other insects will find it.

Okay, noted. I was really dreading cleaning up the carnage. thank you for the kind words and wisdom. It helps!

I appreciate you trying to do your best however you were given some really bad advise! In the removal from your boat! Thank you for trying! You were correct in the queen is the key but I am happy you did not burn down your boat! And given the advice you received you did quite well with limited PPE and really no tools! Let me know if you would like some honey as if you watched any of my channel I likely could spare what ever you would like in the form of honey 😁

That was the craziest scariest thing I’ve ever seen. You’ve got guts girl! Do not worry about the fatalities. It seems to me that there are plenty and having been relocated they will multiply very quickly. You did very very well. What a crazy situation.

That must have bee n (sorry - couldn't resist!) quite the hair raising experience. Glad that you've managed the situation well and hopefully that'll be the last of having additional passengers aboard. Really enjoying your videos and watching you go explore the world as well as yourself on many levels and empathize as you're going through many states of feeling and emotions. Learning a lot about the cruising by sail experience (Thank You for sharing) and am amazed and deeply impressed of your resilience and determination. You rock.

Probably a good idea to relocate them. I would imagine they would not be happy campers to be hundreds of miles at sea with no place to collect pollen. It would be the battle of 2 queens, the queen bee and you. I'd never seen a hive transfer before. Thanks for sharing. I would imagine they associate your scent with their home. I enjoyed the video, Nicole.

Your next project should be making bug screens to keep out the insects and u no see uns midges. and plug up any holes in the boat. I have put up screens over the forward hatch and the companion entry to keep the bugs out .Well done.your knee is looking well too. I hope that's healing up as well. Gerard .

Sorry about the bee problem. I would like to retract my previous statements about anchors. It seems that my experience with a CQR was based on my use of a worn-out anchor. Tests of new CQRs place it on par with the Delta. Furthermore, newer anchor designs such as the Spade, Rocna, Vulcan, etc. test out as more reliable and having greater holding power. My apologies. Jeff

You did nothing wrong. You did your best. There's a girl here in Texas that does that. The first thing is she always finds the queen. She's also got special "cages" for the queen. Once she has her, the rest follow. You did what you could.

If the queen died while you were making bing them another will be born out of the eggs already laid in the comb you moved, don’t fret over it… bees are pretty resilient

I assume you've, by now, solved this bee issue. An easy (and less nasty than vinegar) way to discourage them from taking up residence in the future is to place dryer sheets in your compartments. I just use my used sheets and rotate them out as I do laundry. Plus, I feel better since I'm getting a second use from them as opposed to use once and throw away.
@SailingArtha
@SailingArtha 4 месяца назад
Ohhhh, that is such a good idea. I will do that. The compartments will even smell much better. Thanks for sharing this with me.

At this point I would get an exterminator if available. They will seal the boat and fumigate the inside to kill everything. Now that’s what they do for termites and roaches I’m not sure if they do that for bees. Also I am talking about Florida so again I’m not sure if it’s available where you are. Anyway good luck to you.
@SailingArtha
@SailingArtha 4 месяца назад
Thanks for the advice. I did notice a cockroach the other day so I will be fumigating before I move back on board.

"The needs of the many are greater than the needs of a few" ...Spock's last words in 'Star Trek Wrath of Khan' movie ! Its okay, you saved the majority of them and into their new home. If a few needed to be sacrificed in order to save many, then so be it. Now, how bout using a vacuum cleaner to get the rest ?
@SailingArtha

Where did you fnd that man? He sets fire to a pizza box and then lets you get on with it! You're not a bee person. He should have found the queen before doing anything. That was crazy and I hope you are ok.
