It came out better than we could have ever imagined! Our no-cost project packs a big punch. We still despirately miss our real stained glass but this quick project gives us something pretty to look at while we wait.
This once abandoned Victorian mansion is undergoing a massive restoration. Designed by noted architect Nicholas Clayton, this Galveston historical treasure is slowly back to life. Restoration of this historic house is not easy, and the extensive yard and gardens add to the complexity and expense. Preservation of the original features is high on the priority list. Follow the journey from start to finish. It’s a tough, hot, sweaty, and very expensive road but worth every minute of it.
The League-Kempner House is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to saving this magnificent house.

Well, the ladder didn't get me but walking up the driveway today sure did. I rolled my ankle and now can't walk. It's always the silly stuff.

Heather and Janie are eyeing the parlor ceiling but it would have to be a much more carefully planned job and some finely detailed painting. Definitely not a two day, throw it together, sort fo thing. It could be a very grand space.

Jaine, I was thinking. Your grid method is really good, but there’s another way to do it, if you decide in the future. Use an overhead projector and project a picture of the original window on to the plywood. Sketch the detail in and then paint. I’m not really sure which way is best. What you’ve done is coming out truly nice. 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙂 BTW: When you started the window, I thought that you could’ve replaced the ply with inexpensive plexiglass. The plexi would backlight naturally as real stained glass and the surface would be smoother to paint. Just my thoughts.. 😘

That/s a great idea. I remember doing that in school. We did sonsider plexiglass but the cost was too great by the time you add up all the labor to remove the plywood, build a frame, etc. It would require lots of real scaffolding and Ricardo and his crew for a couple of days to do.

What a great idea this was, it makes the entrance so much nicer. Too bad there isn't any light coming through, but it is what it is and it makes such a difference to that area. Good job both of you!

It is nice to see this when you first step inside the house. We shined a work light up on it from the ground and it really helps it pop. We probably need to get a small spot light for it.

Funny you should mention that. We've been kicking around ideas for setting up a seperate fund for the stained glass and doing some small, side fundraising projects for it. Since it is a vine pattern a plant sale sounds like a wonderful idea.

You and all the wonderful women working with you are doing an amazing job. You've come a long way and if I were not in NJ I would come down and help all of you. I would like to say, for safety sake, when I was much younger my neighbor, an older gentleman, told me that you should never leave your ladder standing. Always close it smaller or lay it down. I fear that it could be bumped and destroy your beautiful art work. I love your amazing abilities to conquer all the aspects of this project. 🎀

It is a new version that is a few pounds lighter. It is so versitile. Homedepot has them onsale for $99 right now. You might consider replacing yours.

@@bobzwife The gorilla ladder is still very heavy compared to a standard aluminum or fiberglass A frame ladder. If you don't need all the fancy configurations you may want to rethink. But if you are already using the older model, it is a few pounds lighter than the original.

Amazed at how it turned out. I see why you wanted to be as close to the original. And, I mean, if it’s going to up for nearly a decade, you want it done right and done well! The more you completed it, the more excited I got to see the final result. I’m going to say it again, inspires me with my own project roadblocks to be okay when it just has to take longer than I want it to! For the doors, may I suggest carbide scrapers? Just a $16 Husky brand did WONDERS on one of my dressers with FOUR coats of stubborn old paint applied throughout time. Like, it SHED right through ALL FOUR layers at the same time. Every location you go to has such charming background echos of yesteryear to admire.

We love Frank and Carry. They certainly have their hands full. Mrs. Mooreland is so much more damaged than the League-Kempner House.
