Heck yeah, I can't thank him enough to tell people about this. Stainless vanadium carbide (20cv, s30v,s35vn,s90v,s110b, s115v) needs to be shaved down a lot when you get it. You must get a massive massive bur then sharpen it down.

@@greggc.touftree5936 only if they ruined the edge or lets say fatigued the steel with to high grinding temperatures. There are companies ot there which are going for wet sharpening or even hand sharpening for their blades, so the factory edge is top notch out of the box, like for example TRM or Rockstead...

S90V is awesome stuff and it's not offered enough in Spyderco’s lineup. It sharpens like a good non-stainless. Lately, I've had a really hard time carrying anything other than my CPM154/S90V Manix. S90V is definitely up there with K390 for me, and I'd be happy if I was stuck with only those 2 options.

@@hooliganAvailyeah, it's full CF with a laminated blade. If you like the Manix and S90V, this one is perfect, and won't disappoint. BBS is where I got mine too, but in a bundle with the K390 PM2 I think. It was about $406 shipped, which makes that PM2 closer to $150 than $200. BBS bundles are the way to go, if you have the funds and can find something you're interested (out of the options they provide).

I know my 940-1 tested at 60.5. I haven't hit the "good" steel yet. It dulls fairly quick which should improve with a few more sharpenings. S90V just seems more user friendly than S110V. I have a few Spydercos that use it. I will have them hardness tested at some point. Thank you for another great test video.

My 940-1 was so chippy until I got past the burnt steel. Which took a long time and many chips and sharpenings in between. It's finally at a point where it doesn't chip from looking at it. Because it's so thick behind the edge, especially after that much sharpening.... I barely use it anymore. I have that framelock spyderco military in s90v also, and after sharpening twice it stopped chipping and its one of my more favorite models of spyderco. I wish they would make a pm2 framelock just like that military framelock.

Most guys prob. get rid of their knives too early which is a shame,what your experiencing happened to me with my s110v native so I said what the heck and went quite steep angle with my edge the knife looks a little ugly ...but man now the edge stays sharp crazy long and its one of my favorite edc
@tacticalcenter8658

@@blueswan2175 happened to my manix 2 s110v. I ended up putting a wider angle for more edge stability and it hasn't happened again. Cut up a ton of stuff and alot of carpet when the whole town flooded. I'm pretty sure spyderco use water cooled robots on there golden knives, but it still gets a little burnt. Unlike Benchmade and there various burnt levels.

I really like S110V because its composition is quite distinctive, and impressive. It’s so good on paper, but it seems like S90V usually works out a bit better as a knife blade, for most people. S110V does offer increased corrosion resistance though, (over S90V), and left toothy, (600 gr), its working edge is tough to beat; because of all those carbides it’s packed with. I just bought a DLC S90V PM2, (teal G-10, black hardware and liners), and it was $40 less than my standard S110V PM2, (indigo G-10). S110V must be a royal b@$t@rd to machine… otherwise I don’t understand why it’s so much more expensive. 🤔

You can't really compare these too, as the grind is different. Makes for much different cut through. Super nice knives though! Also it's SO SO SO good that you are telling people to do new edges. The edge from the store is just to impress people, and high vanadium carbides do not get their best edges out of the box because of the laser cut for the blanks.
@Outpost_76
@Outpost_76 3 года назад
It's been shown many times now tge grind itself and bte thickness doesn't effect the outcome in cardboard testing. What it does show is on the knives tested the 940 doesn't have as good a heat treat as the Military does. It's a shame most won't put enough sharpenings on a knife to see its true potential.

@kaizen5023
@kaizen5023 2 года назад
Love it, thanks for the info! I have a Benchmade 940-1 with the S90V and I agree on the easy to sharpen. I like a toothy working edge on it, it lasts a long time. It is easy to get that knife very sharp. Compared to Benchmade S30vn in an older model 790, the S90v in the 940-1 is noticably better. Looks like Spyderco does even better with it. I wonder how much is due to their edge geometry as well like the shape of the Manik I mean, aren't you also testing the shape of the knife a bit?
@sonofliberty78
@sonofliberty78 2 года назад
The geometry has something to do with it, but homeboy always thoroughly sharpens test blades to the same bevel angle. The 940 isn’t exactly thick behind the edge, either. Spyderco just does a better job heat treating their blades than Benchmade does.

I'm not positive about this one. It came to Joah used so I'm not sure how many edges if any were put on the knife prior to that.
@ejan8088
@ejan8088 4 года назад
Interesting results! I don't have any knife in S90V and I probably won't get one either since I really hate chipping while I love thin edges. How big a problem is it with S90V in relatively heavy use (hardwood cuting), please? That being said, my Benchmade S30V doesn't like a thin edge either (even after a lot of steel removal) which is dissapointing. I ended up putting a microbevel on it which helped but anyway... For me, good M390/CPM 20V works really nice in a folder and I tend to use it most often despite the fact that manufacturers mostly don't do a good service to the this steel.

Hey G , how do you deburr stubborn burrs? I use a kme also, but sometimes I get a burr , usually near the tip that doesn’t wanna come off. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for all your hard work!!
@Outpost_76
@Outpost_76 4 года назад
You're welcome. Stubborn burrs can be a challenge, I start by going back to my finish grit and see if I can reduce it with the stone. If that doesn't work I'll run the edge across a stone and sharpen again. I've only run in to one so far that I couldn't completely remove the burr. I have had a few over the years that were hard enough to deburr that I just threw them away. Try keeping your burr as small as possible and deburr on each stone as much as possible before going to the next one. This will help on any knife as well.

I run anywhere from 400 to 600 grit on S90V. I've found this range to last the longest for my use. You can polish S90V and Steve did a video a few years ago showing the difference. I will be doing polished edges in the future to compare to the testing already done to show the difference and why I run lower grits.
