I gave my son an S90v Manly Wasp to work as a landscape gardener. It took the abuse really well. He brought it back to sharpen every 4-6 weeks and it always had some edge left. Very impressed.

This is why I love s90v and its one of my favorite high carbide steels and just a favorite steel in general. It's definitely in my top 5 steels. I'm always glad to see a company use s90v instead on m390/2020cv like CKF did on a design I loved and bought or Liong Mah latest integral design. Haven't used Benchmade s90v but Spyderco s90v has been pretty solid, especially on the later designs like the manix 2 and native 5.

That makes me want to reconsider the Benchmade Carbon Fibre 940-1. (Which is also cheaper than the regular aluminum 940.) I’ve been reluctant because I have little skill sharpening.
I am very curious how this test will go long-term. You see anecdotal comments all the time about how "Spyderco has the best heat treat" and "Benchmade runs their steel soft" but I've yet to really see any empirical data to verify either claim. I haven't really noticed any difference between my Spyderco's and BM, but then again I've never done a side-by-side. My suspicion is that people just like to shit on Benchmade and thats why those statements are thrown around non-stop until people start to believe them as truth.
@@ericasedc From what I recall BM had published HRC ratings in their catalog that were the accurate values, then some social media dope got online and started listing off conflicting specs at random.

@@arrowheadguys7637 well that's kind of the problem. There's no reason to run 3V at 55hrc unless you're making a sword and even then that's a bit low(not to mention not the best use for that steel). Big choppers are ran at 58-59 hrc and hold up plenty fine. Small knives and folders should be at around 60-63hrc depending on how much toughness you want to give up to gain just a bit of edge retention. I have a Boker Solo in 3v that's supposed to be 62-63hrc (would love to get it tested) and it's held up great in rough cutting wood, plastics and other materials. Spydecro isn't perfect, some of their earlier steels aren't as good as the newer ones(s90v on the PM2 and military isn't as good as the LTW native 5 and manix 2) or the older m390 vs the newer runs. Benchmade does some steels really nice, m4 and cruwear are as good as production gets. 154cm/cpm 154 and s30v are decent. M390/20cv is hit and miss and I've never tried their s90v so I can't speak on that. Its hard to judge a company that makes thousands of knives and heat treats hundreds to thousands blades at once. One batch can be better or worse that the rest. He'll, it could be a variance in the steel, ot all m390 has 1.9% C, 20% Cr and 4% Vanadium. Those are just specs/averages and no matter the maker they can't hit them exactly. That why when you look up mist steels they have 2 numbers for each element and sometimes the difference is pretty big.
As a community we need to stop acting as if Spyderco and Benchmade are comparable. Spyderco offers amazing value and Benchmade is overpriced junk. They are nowhere close to being in the same class.
