The pilot was actually one downed bomber away from getting an award ("Knight's Cross"). Also, his superior/educator had said that shooting a pilot on a parachute will get them shot by him after landing because it's honorless, and he's said when he saw the stricken plane it was "as if they were already hanging from chutes"

More substantively, while the Knight's Cross as a whole was Germany's next highest award, it had five grades (of which four had been awarded by December 1943; the fifth was only awarded once, in December of 1945), and the plain version was the lowest.

This video always makes me tear up and it's such a beautiful story. By flying next the the B-17, Franz was protecting it from AA fire from the ground. If an AA gunner was too trigger happy, he'd die. If someone saw and reported him, he'd die. If any Ally plane found them, he'd die.
Just an FYI ... Stigler dropped in behind Ye Olde Pub as they approached the coast and the AA positions, making it look like he was going to shoot it down
Some more informations about Stigler: His officer Rödel said to him in Africa, 1942, if "I would ever hear that you shoot down an parachute I will shoot you.". Franz has 27 aerial victories when he met Ye old Pub, one more bomber and he would have passed the "magic 30" for the Knights Cross, after the incident he changed his view at the war. He kept fighting against bombers (he said it was his duty to stop bombers destroying Germany), gifted most of his aerial victories to other pilots because he knew they would die soon and took part of the legendary JV-44, led by the more legendary Galland where he lost his friends one by one, flew with the Me-262 and became an bigger ace. He surrendered to the Americans in 1945. In the war he lost his dad, his brother, many of his friends and saw young pilots dying, he also saw the ace Steinhoff being burnt alive. Franz was also the man who teached the ace Barkhorn.
Charlie and his crew almost died, but he was able to pull the plane up in time. Then he just so happened to fly over Franz. As the incredible Franz once said in an interview, 'It's fate. You can't stop it.' Franz tried to get them to land in Germany first, and surrender, but Charlie refused. Then he tried to get them to land in a neutral country, but Charlie refused again. So he just decided to escort them across the water, making sure they don't crash. Once he was sure they were okay, he saluted and turned back.
He was escorting them because he knows that when he leaved them alone they would be shot down by the AA at the Atlantic Wall. The people down at the AA were thinking that he the Fighter was guiding the Bomber to land on german territory and if they aimed at the bomber they could hit the fighter too.
Another Swedish thing: There's a thing often referred-to as the "Swedish Shuffle." It happens when, for example, you stop a swede for directions. They most often are very polite, will give you accurate directions, will point where you should go, and then when you move your eyes from them, they bugger off. Swedes will also do this at events and parties. When they're not having a great time, feel like fifth wheels, or think of something preferable they could be doing, they'll just leave when nobody's looking. No preamble, no "Thank you so much... blah blah." You just turn your head, and they're gone. Don't take it personally.
When the German fighter pilot pointet to the right and the pilots of the B-17 declined - if I recall correctly that was the German fighter pilot advising them to land in Sweden as he didn't think that they would make it to England because of the shape they were in.
As far as I know, the german fighter pilot tried at the beginning to make them land at germany, which the B-17 crew refused. After that the german had the idea to lead them to the neutral Sweden which was closer than England. But the pilot of the B-17, mostliy concentrated on somehow keeping the plane in the air, didn`t unterstand the germans plan and keept flying towards England. So the german gave up and escorded them the long way toward England.
For Stigler, the pilot this song is about, the bomber would have been the three last air victories(he had 27 at the time, he needed 30 and a bomber was worth three victories) he would have needed to get the knights cross of the iron cross, the highest military honor at that time...Thats what the 'Said goodbye to the cross he deserved' line is all about...
I would like to recommend more sabaton songs, but that list is a bit too extensive to just ramble off about it here, so instead I would just like to make a few overall recommendations: 1. Always watch until the end of the video (mainly in music videos, but also in live performances) because as you saw they like to include all sorts of interesting information or tributes. 2. Be sure to listen to the other commenters on matters of whether to watch something as a live show or a music video since Sabatons crowd interaction, 'sing alongs', stage props, camera angles etc. are quite amazing at times. 3. If you want to delve deeper into the story behind any of their songs, they do have an official history channel called 'Sabaton History' where they mainly give historical facts about the songs, but also delve a little into how they created the songs or what their inspirations were etc. Now besides that previous ramble of mine I would just like to say that this was a really good video and I enjoy the enthusiasm you have for the music as well as you being genuine with your reactions and overall the fact that you chose this band as one you would want to react to. You definitely have my attention and subscription, hope to see more from you in the future and that you are having a great morning, day, evening, night or whatever time it may be for you.
They flew across German air defenses rather low (probably because they had to stay low for oxygen), and the "Hunter" stayed so close to the bomber that the AA-crews couldn't shoot at the bomber without hitting their own plane too.
Sweden facts: One of the major coffee drinking nations in the world. We like alcohol but it's all personal taste, but beer, wine and spirits are all appreciated :-) You have a huge Metal festival called Sweden Rock every year in June and Sabaton has it's own festival every summer too. Absolut vodka is indeed Swedish, as is HM (clothes), Skanska (construction), Ericson (electronics/communications) and many others. Swedes in general appear a bit aloof but we're mostly shy and not good at small talk - in general. Most of us are more or less fluent in English as we learn it from 1st grade in school and are very influenced by American culture in music, movies, TV and so on. Our television and movies are subtitled and not dubbed, allowing us to learn how a language sounds. We pay high taxes but get alot for it, like 5 weeks paid vacation yearly, 400 days of paid parental leave, free education from pre-school to PhD (you pay your living expenses of course, but no tuition), cheap healthcare and good infrastructure. One thing that is very Swedish is pickling - vegetables mostly. In general we don't eat meatballs every day :-)) You're welcome to contact me if you have questions, of course. In metal you have something called the Gothenburg sound which is a type of melodic death metal, vanguarded by bands like In Flames. We also have bands like Hammerfall (powermetal), Sabaton, of course and many others. Music is actually one of Sweden's main exports and lots of session musicians feature on albums of artists from all over the world. We're a small country with less than 10 million people .

Hello, I am a swede :) and a substitute teacher. And a guide at a few museums. And masterstudent in archaeology. I can give you a short summary about this blueyellow country :) So, regarding beer: Mariestads, Norrlands Guld, there are of course plenty others. But I am biased since I am also halfgerman, so I mostly drink german or czech beer. Food: You mentioned meat balls, but in Göteborg, the west coast it is popular with seafood. We are also a outdoor people meaning we like to go fishing, picking mushrooms, berries, lobsters(and swedish rule number 1, NEVER reveal these spots for others). We have quite many hunters, hunting season is in september/october. We like sports like football, ice hockey, floorball, riding, motorsports (Check out Annie Seel a real amazon). Geography We have 25 landscapes and around 10 million inhabitants. From south to north Sweden it is 1 572 km long. And 500 km wide. In the south and east(especially in the province Upland it is very flat due to the heavy weight during the last Ice Age). The city Kiruna in the north is very large if you measure it by its radius, around 20,000 square kilometers. Apparently the same sixe as Wales or New Jersey- We have lots of forests although most of it today is cultural, which means that it has been affected by man. Our tallest mountain is Kebnekaise and we have around 6000 lakes, seven major rivers, two national parks, and for example a really cool Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi. Economy We are what is called a "blandekonomi"(mixed economy). That means that we have a quite free market and a quite high tax 20 %. But we are a socialliberal country so there are a lot of good benefits from this. Education is free, which means it ain't as much based on social class. Politics: 349 members in the parliament, 7 partys. You need minimum 4 & to be there. History: Sweden or Sverige as it is called here has been a unified country since around 500 years now. "Svea" were a certain branch of inhabitants in Scandinavia, mainly living in Uppland or around Mälaren. "rike" means kingdom. I could go on for ages regarding history haha. I saw you have a special interest in medieval times. I have so far done 5 excavations for this time period. Mainly for the era 600-1200 AD. If you need more info or references for further reading let me know :) And other swedes/scandinavians can of course add stuff here hehe.
The Brown-Stingler incident is such a moving story! Sabaton does a amazing job of showing history from a lot of diffrent perspectives and I think that's really important. Looking foward to watching more of the reactions, love from Poland!

Sabaton have quite a big following in Poland because of it and is one of the really few rocky/metal bands that actually shows in the radio from time to time. I especially recommend checking out "40:1" the song that first made them super popular over here.
The video at the very end, that older lady was the daughter of the German fighter pilot, who knew the story from her father, which likely was passed on to her family, and her son being a fan of the band informed his mother, who in turn send the video to the band, giving thanks so her father's story will live on. Watching the video and the reactions of this song, it always brings me to tears 😭😭😭. Its a beautiful story, something that you do not hear about these days sadly.
My dad served in the Army Air Corps/Air Force in WWII, flying C-47s and dropping paratroopers in European combat zones. He was shot down above Grave, Holland, during Operation Market Garden. He spent eight days behind enemy lines while the Dutch Underground guided him back to friendly territory. At times they hid in ditches while German troops marched by. He said he could have touched their boots. At one “safe” barn, a little brass band came out to meet the American pilot. The locals thought they had been liberated. After a final race across a field in the middle of a German and American tank battle, he got back to US troops. My dad actually knew Charlie Brown. While Ye Olde Pub’s crew were told not to talk about the incident, other pilots knew. This was an act of honor and chivalry in a modern war. Stigler was such an extraordinarily good man. I was so pleased to find that Brown and Stigler not only met, but became good friends. My father always wanted to personally thank the Dutch people who risked everything to help him, but never found out who they were. He always said I owed my very existence to the Dutch, because without them I never would have been born. NOTE: Stigler was able to fly that B-17 across the German AA gun placements because Germany had captured B-17s that they would use to fly over Allied territory to gain reconnaissance. That’s why the guns on the ground didn’t just shoot Ye Olde Pub out of the sky as it went overhead, BF-109 or no. Seeing an escorted B-17 might have been unusual, but it certainly happened. On a sadder note, after the story came out, 40+ years after the war, Mr. Stigler got calls and letters from Germans calling him a traitor and the same from Americans/Canadians calling him a filthy Nazi. Some wars never end.
Great reaction to Sabaton! I can give u a small list of stuff to google regarding the food and drink culture in Sweden. Regarding alcohol, I would say that Absolute Vodka is our most famous brand. Other than that we have Mackmyra Whiskey and at midsummers (and some other occasions) we drink Brännvin, witch is a potato or grain based hard liquor. Around the Christmas holidays we drink Glögg. That’s a type of mulled wine with spices. We are just now starting to get a good microbrew culture in Sweden but some of the most common “old” beers that we have are Falcon, Norrlands Guld, Pripps and Mariestad. The list can of course go on. Food wise we have the Smörgåsbord and the Husmanskost. Husmanskost is equivalent to 'traditional Swedish food', 'everyday food', or 'good, plain food'. Think simple meals based on ingredients readily available in Sweden: meatballs and mashed potatoes, reindeer or elk stews, simple fish recipes, and so on. It is old-fashioned and unfussy, traditionally eaten at home. But from the early 20th century onwards, even as Sweden underwent industrialization, this type of food began to appear in taverns and inns, and it's still remarkably popular among locals and tourists. I think someone else covered Sill or pickled herring. So I won’t explain that. But it’s worth a google. And also Knäckebröd and Surströmming. !!! We also have the most Swedish thing ever, FIKA. Fika is often translated as "a coffee and cake break", which is kind of correct, but really it is much more than that. Fika is a concept, a state of mind, an attitude and an important part of Swedish culture. Many Swedes consider that it is almost essential to make time for fika every day. It means making time for friends and colleagues to share a cup of coffee (or tea) and a little something to eat. There are of course A LOT of other foodstuffs and drinks to mention. Sabaton isn't a band that I was planning to listen to until I subscribed to your channel. Thanks. This video has special meaning for me as my father was a gunner on a B-24. His plane was shot down and fortunately the crew survived though they were captured. Now I need to go back and watch your Night Witches reaction. Without having seen your reaction I'm assuming it's about the Russian women night pilots in WWII.

Stigler was invited to reunions of the B17 crew and their descendants. At the first one, he told Brown that he didn't feel like he belonged there, because he was a German pilot fighting on the other side. At the time of that reunion, the crew had 25 descendants. One of them (I don't know which) told him that none of the descendants would even exist if it hadn't been for his actions, so he belonged there just as much as anyone. The only fatality of the incident was the tail gunner, who was already dead when Stigler caught up to the plane. I read that when he saw the dead tail gunner, he immediately thought of his brother who had died in a bomber. Everyone else survived. Brown and Stigler both died in 2008 (Brown was 86, Stigler was 92). The last survivor of the crew was the waist gunner, who lived until 2016.

If you are interested in Sweden, you need to check out Sabaton's single (The Royal Guard), and full album (Carolus Rex), on the history of the Swedish empire. If you do listen to the songs from Carolus Rex, you need to listen to them in the order of the album since they are in chronological order.
There is one festival you should visit in Sweden, it’s Sabatons own music festival in their hometown of Falun (just 45 miles from my home). As I belive you know allready. Sabaton has songs about sooo many battles,wars and lifestories . One song which is dear to me is "The Ballad of Bull"...Its about a Australian soldier to used his skills in another way to save soldiers life....Please add that one into your allready long list of Sabaton hits ;-) ......Their newest hitsingle , released just 2 weeks ago!!! Two more Swedish things i thought of, then I promise to leave your comments alone: Thing one: Swedes love their houses. They'll carry pics of buildings in their phones like new parents carry baby pics. It's my experience that they love being asked the provenance of their houses. It's an exceptional ice-breaker. They'll tell you the whole story. Also, odds are good that, if you interact with a Swede, they'll look up your house on google maps. So, don't be shocked when, the next time you speak on the phone, they say that they love the landscaping around your front porch. Thing 2: Privacy is very different in Sweden. Anybody with a few keystrokes can find out a lot about another person -- how much money another Swede makes, what their house is worth, etc. They're proud of this openness and don't understand why this makes an American cringe. Even if you explain that you get 4 calls a day here from thieves fishing for your info, it's just not easy for them to comprehend our need for privacy. At times, it can make them suspicious -- feeling like our not being forthcoming means we've got something to hide.
Gallantry and chivalry still existed on the Western Front. When Wing Commander Robert Stanford Tuck, a Dunkirk and Battle of Britain veteran, was downed by antiaircraft fire and captured near St.-Omer in January 1942, he was invited by Luftwaffe Colonel Adolf Galland to dinner in the airfield mess and handed a bottle of whiskey before being taken to a prison camp. The two became close friends after the war, boar hunting in Germany and grouse hunting on Tuck’s mushroom farm.
Franz Stigler was a German chase aviator who spared the crew of a badly damaged American bomber and instead escorted them home. They were so badly damaged by the attack on a factory in Bremen that they just managed to keep the plane aloft and many were wounded. But when Franz approached them, he couldn't bring himself to kill them and risked his own life. Franz already had 22 degrees and only one was missing for the Knight's Cross. But instead of securing the award, he flew alongside the machine and escorted it to the North Sea. Here he saluted the American pilot, turned around and flew back. Both pilots were silent for a long time about the extraordinary act. Until they finally get to know each other personally 50 years after the war through a newspaper article. This resulted in a close friendship that only ended when they both died in quick succession in 2008.
I’m not sure if you’ve been told but there is a Sabaton history channel! And I believe the lady at the end of the Night Witches song is a homage also to the bands all female fan regiment. I'm not crying your crying lol, it's truly wonderful to see such acts of mercy in what can be considered by most to be the darkest hour of human expierence.
what I love so much about Sabaton is they tell genuine human stories. One of the things I find repulsive about the way history is taught is that you'll learn about battles and the "great men" of history. But there's no room for humanity, simply a machine that chews up the lives of young people across the world. But these stories are important, they are what keeps us alive long after we depart the world, a reminder that there is a better world worth fighting for.
You just brought up a great point that I hadn't thought of. The boys catch a lot of heat about their songs being "nationalist" in the way they "glorify war". But what those people don't realize is it's usually about the individual, not the nation.
By far, my favorite Sabaton song, and the one I can most relate to. I live near Bremen (the place they bombed) and Oldenburg (where they almost crashed), and one of my Opas (Grandpa) was a AA-guner at the Atlantikwall, in the Netherlands. I wonder if he saw a BF-109 escorting a B-17? Great reaction.

Stigler could have just flown away after seeing the bomber was in no shape to fight, but he knew that would not save the bomber: Charlie was about to fly over German anti-aircraft batteries. Stigler stayed close to Charlie's plane so that the AA gunners could not fire for fear of hitting Stigler's plane. They showed that briefly in the video, starting at 11:21.
Sadly the Christmas Truce of WW1 was allowed to happen only once. War is bad enough but that was a moment during a war where the sides were reminded that their opponent is also human.

Best history lesson you'll ever get is a Sabaton song, best history course is a Sabaton concert, go if you ever get a chance it is an experience you won't soon forget. Here like all their great songs history is told not about facts in dusty books but about the people who went through those experiences and are now forgotten, but not to Sabaton who bring them back to life so we can experience those moments in history as they did. This story was another example of the human impact that events have on people, how many families were around because Franz showed real mercy that day and how many people wouldn't ever be here if he didn't!!! Swede here; classic Swedish food: kebab pizza and raindeer meat stews :) Personally I love craft beer from Nynäshamns Bryggeriet. We're very tech savvy here. Sweden is in some ways the silicon valley of Europe and our game Dev scene is incredible. Dreamhack is in Sweden. Ericsson and telia pioneered a lot in mobile connectivity. We're peaceful and love nature. All in all a pretty great country

Swede here! I'll jot down a few things Swedish, though it will absolutely not be a full list. We're big on seafood, for all our major holidays, Christmas, Easter, Midsommar, we usually eat pickled herring and some kind of shrimp or roe salad. Every summer in August we have crayfish parties, since this is the only time in the year that we're allowed to catch fresh water crayfish, though salt water crayfish is perhaps more common on the west coast. We often take shots of alcohol during the holiday dinners, always with a short and often humourus song. We call it snaps and snapsvisa, and usually drink some kind of bitter flavoured alcohol, like vodka or what we call brännvin, or akvavit. Ever heard of a smorgasbord? That's a Swedish word, though we spell it smörgåsbord. Geographically Sweden is s very long country, bordering Norway and Finland in the North, and bordering Denmark in the south by a narrow strait. If you fold Sweden over on itself it would reach Rome in Italy, that's how long it is. Still, we have just about 9 million inhabitants, so a large part of it are forests or mountains.
The North Point is above the Arctic circle, meaning that in summer the sun never sets there. Where I live in the south, in June the sun does set, but only for a couple of hours and the sky barely goes dark at all. In winter is dark instead, giving us maybe 4 hours of sun light in December.
Wow, such great information. I remember staying on the Aran islands in May and the sun went down around 11 and that glow never seemed to really leave the sky. I know you're much further north but still. Very strange for someone not used to it.

Well, you could also say that germany took back its land that the Enténte so graciously redistributed to weaken it. There are a lot of false information for the sake of keeping that one dimensional image. As this is a channel with an historian, I presume he could tell a thing or two about it. About the "neutral" Netherlands, or the "justice" of the Nuremberg trials for example....

If I'm not to late to add about things we like in Sweden is löjrom, that is roe from the European cisco, an especially Kalix löjrom which is from fish caught in the Bothnian bay. Also Cloudberrys is the shit, either with cream or ice cream or as is. The liking of cloudberry might be a regional thing since i have met a lot of people from the south of Sweden that don't like it :P It's still quite of a treat since picking it is a bit of a bitch
Franz Stiggler passed up an opportunity for the Manerheim cross and if found out, he would likely have been executed for treason. His commander told his unit that if he found out that one of his men shot at a parachuting enemy, that he would pull them out of their plane and execute them there when they landed. Stiggler felt that the Pub's condition qualified. Stiggler lost 2 brothers a few days before, he said that he gained a new brother when he spared Charlie Brown. It's a really beautiful story
For me as a German, im so thankfull for People like Franz Stigler and Charlie Brown, because our Goverment will Teach us Germans that every German in the Years betweet 1930 and 1945 was a Nazi. Im thankfull that German Soldiers like Franz Stigler who sayd to his fellow Pilots in his Squadron, "If i see someone of you shooting an Enemy Pilot on a Parachute, unable to fight back, killing them, i swear you i will shot you down!" , show the Enemy that not all People in Germany are or were Bastards and only have to fight for the wrong Side.
