The words "Feet by feet we pay the price of a mile here" is probably a reference to their song "The price of a mile" where they sing "..Paying the price in young mens life..". Both these two songs describes the horror of the WW1 trench warfare.

That and so many young boys of the age of 17 to 19 where slaughtered for only a few feet of land the Somme is a good example on the first day the British Army suffered 57,470 casualties, including 19,240 killed in action theres a reason it's said here in the UK the war literally wiped out entire communities of youth it sombering when you think about absolutely heart breaking to.

Great reaction by the way! Cool that youre really into the meaning of their songs. Thats what Sabaton is all about. Well...the metal as well of course, but still... their ability to tell stories with their music.. its really unique IMO. Rock on! :) \m/

"The price of a mile" is a reference to other song by Sabaton that song is about the battle of Passchendaele of the WWI it was a battle where the front line move only 6 miles... Almost 500,000 soldiers died in that battle... In that sense 80,000 lives per mile was the price... The battle was an allied victory but it had no military or strategic significance, it was a Pyrrhic victory (with many casualties on the "winning" side almost like the "losing" side)... Great reaction btw! Sabaton is just amazing!

“Feet by Feet, we pay the price of a mile.” Very poetic verse describing how many lives were taken to gain one foot of distance. How many lives are the price of a mile if one foot of advance cost a hundred or more lives? Brings onions to my eyes.

Price of a mile is a song Sabaton made in 2008 and tells the story of the Battle of Paschendale that lasted 3+ months for a mile of trench war that cost 500.000+ lifes!

World War 1 was also called the War To End All Wars. It’s also famous for its other name; The Great War. The men signing up to fight were told by propaganda that it was a grand adventure, a great opportunity to serve their country and win glory. The men found hell, in the cold and in the mud. This is kinda written in the perspective of a soldier who fell for the lies told. “Where is this greatness I’ve been told? This is the lies that we’ve been sold.” The soldiers didn’t know why they were fighting, not really. I also saw the Price of a Mile reference in the comments. To drive it home more; the Price of a Mile; one human life was worth about five centimeters.

I agree with you. I definitely think there was an awful lot of confusion as to just what these soldiers were fighting for. WWII, sadly, had a much clearer purpose.

The Battle of Passchendaele, also known as the Third Battle of Yper, was one of the worst battles of the Great War. During the entire fighting, the Allies managed to capture 8 miles of land at the cost of more than 240,000 casualties, similar losses suffered by the German army. The territory that the Allies conquered in more than three months of fighting and cruel losses was occupied back by the German army during a one-week onslaught. The battlefields at Passchendaele were one large swamp after several weeks of rain, the soldiers usually drowning when they fell off the marked or planked path into the mud. More than 43,000 bodies have not been found to this day, and the Passchendaele area still bears signs of fighting, craters can still be seen in places for over than a century, and there are thousands of unexploded artillery shells and mortar mines underground.

WW1 has only been called WW1 since WW2, before that it was called the Great War, since it was war on a scale and with technology and destruction unlike anything before it (and probably since tbh). “The war to end to end all war” was actually a term for WW1, first said by H. G. Wells, (an English writer,) and initially used idealistically, with the thought being that the destruction would make people and governments wouldn’t want to go to war. Now its used with hindsight. WW1 was a war unlike anything seen before in many ways. There hadn’t been a large war in Europe, where some of the biggest empires and colonizers had their mainland and capitals, in nearly a century (I think, I’m mostly recalling from memory here). Anything they moved their armies for was mainly in interest for their colonies and such, which let a certain attitude prevail. I’ve heard people call it “war as an adventure”, because that’s most what the people signing up for it thought “oh, I’ll spend a few years in the army, see the world, maybe have to shoot someone and get some good stories”. WW1 was the total destruction of that kind of attitude. A big part of it was this was the first major deployment of the machine guns, but more important was that both sides of the conflict had them. It was a big contributor to the fact that WW1 became one of the deadliest conflicts in history in just under 4 and a half years. “There will be no encore” and in a way there wasn’t. Yes, WW2 happened, but it was a very different war. In WW1 the front barley moved, they shelled and fought in the same areas of land for years. It was a war of attrition, where they were just trying to wear each other down and just make it so the enemy didn’t have enough men and material to be able to fight anymore; the major movement happened in the beginning and end of the war. WW2 was a very different beast where the front moved and the occupation of France was actually successful. (Not so) Fun Fact: in the areas of France and Belgium where the front of WW1 was for most of the war (called Zone Rouge) up to hundreds of tons of unexploded ordnance are recovered every year, and according to the French civil defense agency at the current rate it’ll take between 300 and 700 years to clean the area completely.

Feet by feet we pay the price of a mile I believe it means how so many young boys and men were slaughtered for literally a few feet of ground on the first day of the Somme offensive going to use my own nation the British Army suffered 57,470 casualties, including 19,240 killed in action its considered the worst day in the history of the British Army. British and French forces had advanced about 6 mi (9.7 km) on the Somme, on a front of 16 mi (26 km) at a cost of 419,654 to 432,000 British and about 200,000 French casualties, against 465,181 to 500,000 or perhaps 600,000 German casualties. Until the 1930s the dominant view of the battle in English-language writing was that the battle was a hard-fought victory against a brave, experienced and well-led opponent. Winston Churchill had objected to the way the battle was being fought in August 1916 and Prime Minister David Lloyd George, criticised attrition warfare frequently and condemned the battle in his post-war memoirs. In the 1930s a new orthodoxy of "mud, blood and futility" emerged and gained more emphasis in the 1960s when the 50th anniversaries of the Great War battles were commemorated. Here in the UK after the war it was that it had literally wipes out and entire generation and communities of young men.

Like Carl said, The price of a mile is another one of their songs that touch on world war one, worth a listen, if not more so, a bit more depth into the trench warfare and how utterly depressing it was in terms of lives for gains.

Great reaction!! Check out Sabaton's " "Devil dogs" (official music video). It's about the U S Marines in WW1. The footage is from the North American tour last year (I think.. ). Also check out some of their live stuff. I recommend "Ghost division" (official live video, 2012 from Woodstock, Poland), "Red Baron" (live from Berlin, 2020), "Night witches" (live from Leipzig, 2020), "Carolus Rex" (live from Stockholm, 2020. It's the Swedish version. The song is about a badass king of the Swedish empire 🇸🇪) and "Livstid i krig" = "Lifetime of war" (live from Gothenburg, 2020. Goosebumps guaranteed!). Greetings from Sweden!🤘🇸🇪
