I use the same Gri-Gri device for saddle hunting. I also add a backup friction knot to my rope and I attach the other end to my linesman loop. This is for extra safety and it also helps to control the brake line and your descent by holding on to the friction knot. "Stay Safe"
I use the same rope and same method with the madrock safeguard ...for 2 reasons...it is a great way down whether in emergency or non-emergency (very efficient)...but the #1 reason I rappel down is because it's so freakin badass!
@@bamabiker They are not the same. The Gri Gri has a spring tension on the cam action. Whereas the Safeguard does not. Thus, when belaying, the Gri Gri flows more freely. Because of the lack of the spring on the Safeguard, the cam catches instantly. This makes using for ascending a tree, especially if 1 sticking, safer. Also, if you take all pressure off of the Safeguard, it will not slide down the rope. However, I do agree you should back up your device. A prusik or jammy works great. I won't use anything other than a Safeguard, unless something better comes along. Just a personal preference. But, probably agreed with by most who 1 stick using a mechanical device.
@@jimste5898 when tension is off the grigri that is biggest reason i run the autoblock, it keeps any rope from going through and immediately locks it back. basically like having a 3rd hand on the brake at all times especially when I'm using the hand climber method
@@bamabiker That's my point. The Safeguard will not slide down the rope. Other reason I chose the Safeguard, is that it has fewer moving parts, it weighs less, and is smaller. It also cost less money. But, like I mentioned, it's just a personal preference. I've tried the Gri Gri because all Safeguards were brought up. Probably by saddle hunters. Lol. I've tried the Gri Gri, Lifeguard, and, Safeguard. The Gri Gri and Lifeguard are similar. I just prefer the Safeguard.
