This was such a perfect day to get out and dig, 68 and sunny is hard to beat!
We headed up Saddle Mountain, in central Washington, to dig petrified wood and we had some wonderful finds!
Late last summer the area burned and since then, it seems the road has gotten a lot worse, no longer can you take a normal car to the top of Saddle Mountain, you need to have something like a truck, SUV, or a Subaru.

I really appreciate the time lapse of the drive in. Gives me an idea of whether or not my car can handle the road. It made it through glass butte without any trouble, so this looks easy enough.

Hello CR, I made the trip to Saddle Mountain yesterday, March 10, 2021. It was my first rockhounding adventure outside of a 70 mile radius from my house. Everything went well except I'm not sure I was at site B, or, the spot where you were- if that is site B. I had doubts when I got to my location, but there were so many holes that had been refilled I thought if it isn't site B then it must be site A. I'm just hoping it wasn't on private land. When I got home I double checked by watching yours and Vug Meister's videos and referenced my location off the two radio towers in the background. All I know is I'm pretty sure I wasn't at the same spot you guys were at. All I had was a printed Google map and the Gem Trails book, no cell phone or GPS. I refilled all my holes which were pretty small. I filled one 5 gallon bucket with mostly pretty small pieces. I'm thinking I didn't get any of the good stuff that I might have gotten if I were in the right spot, but I love it all nonetheless and plan to tumble every last bit of it. Thanks.

That's great to hear that you made it up there. I plan on doing an overnight trip out there soon and really showing the area off a lot more now that I have a drone, I think a view from the sky can really explain the lay out.

Some of these pits are years and years old. Saddle Mountain is great for petrified wood since its sandwiched between two layers of basalt that has been fractured by uplift, that along with the dry climate means its pretty much in perfect condition. Thanks for watching.

Beautiful finds! I dug in Wyoming where there was supposed to be blue pet wood. Someone had come in with a backhoe and tore the whole area up and I did not find one piece. A little greed goes a long way. Your so good with your cameras work too. Keep it up! Havagudun my friend.

Hey, so I have 4 buckets full from saddle yesterday, I dumped 7 gallons of regular white vinegar in them a few hours ago. I am wondering, should I be using the more acidic cleaning vinegar? And is a 24 hr soak about appropriate?
@CurrentlyRockhounding
@CurrentlyRockhounding 3 года назад
It really just depends on how much calcite is on some of it. The more you got the longer you will need to soak. Vinegar is nice cause it's not really harsh to work with, you might need to soak it longer then 24hours. I would just check on it and see how it's coming along.
