This was a great way to start off our 2022 rockhounding season!
We had some excellent finds, and one in particular was quite surprising.

What impresses me most out of your trips is the discretion used in collecting. It’s refreshing to see someone leaving behind material. So many collectors out there (across all “genres”) have a more-more-more mentality. Like you said: how much of one rock/fossil do you actually need? Thanks again for an amazing trip report!
@CurrentlyRockhounding
@CurrentlyRockhounding Год назад
I believe that the concept of more more more is a flawed mentality. Rocks are slow to clean, slow to cut and slow to polish so what always ends up happening that you have this huge backlog of stuff to deal with it gets overwhelming which isn't very fun. I think there's a reason you rarely see peoples collections because they never got past the collecting point and its all just sitting in buckets filled with nasty rain water.
@CharlestonFossilAdventures

@@CurrentlyRockhounding Aha, very good point! You’re absolutely right about the mental stress of material backlog. I just got a lapidary setup and saw (after seeing your Hi Tech saw review) and already have a pile that needs managing. 🤦🏽‍♂️

OH MY! ...You totally just reminded me of the nightmare I had 2 nights ago! OK, SO HERE IT IS; I bravely managed to get my clunker of a van up to Michigan from SW Florida. As I come out of the forest and over the bluff... to my shock & horror, I found it absolutely picked clean! Not a single rock was to be had ...not as far as the eye could see! FF >> to today & I find myself busting up laughing. I was tickled pink watching you being a teensy bit indecisive on whether a rock should stay or go. I was completely taken aback by your commitment to making sure that there were plenty of rocks to go around, enough for everyone. The world thanks you, 'my brother friend' ... for making sure as to leave a few rocks up there so the masses are able to share in the joy! Thank you again for creating such great content. *** Did anyone else gasp?? @ ...'' oh and here's an opal'' ..& U chucked it! ...ouch! ...that hurt!

All the blue petrified wood I've seen have been a baby blue/gray and only as a ring around the core. Yours appears to be the core and very rich in color. Rad being an undervalued word really does emphasize how special that casting is. Thumbs up on the little hammer, the handle didn't look to weathered. Always here for more.

Thank you for the report! At 20 minutes in to this video is the "picture wood" area...rocks that show pictures ( go to the Ginkgo Museum to see what they look like). Also this area has a large array of amazing colors in its wood. The wood is mostly straight grained ranging from small Bic Lighter size to large hard to carry up the hill sizes. The area was not dug much in the recent past 2000-2015? but I was excited to see a ton of younger folks digging it up recently this spring. To find the bigger pieces go over the hill from the road's parking area 50 yards? toward Mattawa and you will find newly dug holes. DIG IN THE almost PURE SAND,.DO NOT waste your time digging in a hole that is filled with rocks. Do not spend much time looking through small pieces as you dig down, use your energy to get deep (4 to 6 feet ), Find a hole that is sandy and half filled in and continue digging it out to one side or the other in fresh sand to save time. The heavier larger wood seems to be deep, this recent trip it was sitting on solid rock. (See my FB page) I kind of say rediscovered this area back about 15 years ago, camping with the POW WOW group, no one had dug there then, just very old holes. I saw where someone had pulled out colored wood and I dug deep and got beautiful pieces out that weekend. I always wanted to let people know, I did not want the facts of the area to disappear. There is tons of wood there, it will never run out. There used to be out houses on the top of the "Camel Hump" back when which are gone. JoelJurasek

It's a great area to explore. From what I can tell so far it seems rather uncommon to find blue agatized wood up on Saddle Mt. but if there's one there must be more. Yes the project I have in mind will be a video if it comes out nicely. We had one of those dog DNA tests done to see what kind of mutt she is and she has a lot of husky in her, so I guess that explains all the funny sounds she's always making.

It's really cool to see how different the Petrified Wood is in Washington versus where I hunt here in the deserts around Las Vegas Nevada. I believe the soil and the heat are the biggest factors. I'm finding some amazing extinct coral feet from where I'm finding Petrified Wood. That in itself I find is really cool you know. Which came first the Coral or the Wood? I just love the history of the past in this desert. Deserts have a voice and boy do they tell a great story. Great finds there and another great video!!!

That's interesting to hear, I really know nothing of the geology of southern Nevada.
@aidankeller1717
@aidankeller1717 11 месяцев назад
Most likely that the coral came first. That area used to alternate between shallow see and sand dunes or something similar. This is based off of what I've learned about the Geology of Sedona and prehistoric maps that I've seen, included Nevada in them.

I live way down in Texas. Had to get away from the snow after I fell and injured my back one time too many. I was born and raised in Idaho. I would love to buy small pieces I saw you tossing away 🤗. As I am retired now and just learning to tumble stones I find on the road I live on. I also have found many great fossils here from the Cretaceous as well as some Eocene Periods. Texas was under water more than once. So it's all marine animals here. If you would be willing to send me some of the rocks you find. I would be happy to pay. As I will probably never get up in that area again. Love watching your videos. I often drool over your finds. But, I have found many nice specimens. I would just like to get some rocks from close to home I could polish or just keep as they are. Have a great day. PS I am retired now which is another reason I don't travel. @@CurrentlyRockhounding I think there are more places to find Sunstone other than just that one section North of Plush Oregon and I am not certain that is there technically name. I don't remember Sunstone being clear. Never the less there are 3 locations I have foundbto be very similar to one another. A spot near the Thomas range in Utah. Which I would recommend 1st just due to the fact that there is several other locations close by for rock collection and gem hunting. I think the good spots may be taken or claimed for Sunstone north of plush Oregon. So you may have to do a pay to dug option. Though I do hope with your knowledge you will find your own locations. The 3rd location that I know of is about north west of Sacramento they call them blue diamond but act very similar to the others as far as how that come up from the ground during rainy season. I want to see you succeed more with your clips. If I find new locations for rocks or gemstones I will specifically let you know only other than a couple people at my apartment complex.

Forgot to mention or ask a question. In my recent research on opals. I read that opal is usually associated with radioactive material. I just can remember the name of mineral. Have you learned if that area is radioactive?

I do not believe that is the case for a large number of reasons. The geology doesn't match and the hardness.

Absolutely enamored by that blue limb cast!! Excited to do some work on my material today myself, got some stuff bought from the Polka Dot mine and Richardson's, plus a bunch of Bigg's Picture that me and a friend mined out. Let me know if you have an interest in some Bigg's material if you don't already have some, definitely have a LOT of it and we're pretty sure we're the only ones who know where the vein is currently!

Someone claimed on my vid of Saddle that they found fire opal in the big pit. Also, it's surprising how poorly the size of that pit comes across on video. Really need a wide shot with someone in it to drive it home. Blue piece looked great, bet it will be even better polished!
@CurrentlyRockhounding
@CurrentlyRockhounding 2 года назад
We do have fire opal out here in NE Washington and there is opalized wood up at Saddle Mt. so I don't think its out of the realm of possibility that someone found light red bit of opal on Saddle Mt. but I would want to see a photo before believing that personally. The big pit up at the top is rather larger for sure.

Any thought about what mineral gives your agate its blue color?
@CurrentlyRockhounding
@CurrentlyRockhounding 2 года назад
That's a very good question, there only handful of things that could be in the mix so to speak that could produce the color but with out something like an XRF gun its really just speculation.

Hammer find 😀I have found one last Thursday, on a fossil hunt. Not branded but bigger (which obviously means better 😁). And had it not been for a little crab nodule (only 3-4 inch but detail is sweet... so far 5 hours of prep and may be half way there), it would have been find of the day.

If you’ve cleaned with muriatic acid, I’ve seen where the opal/what CC didn’t dissolve, turn a similar blue color. But seems superficial. I can’t say if your piece is exhibiting the same, but some of the blue on my pieces faded after being resoaked in acetone and based out water. I dont know if it’s a reaction with chemicals in the water, or the container, or the rocks and wood itself.

If you tumble those limb casts t it can remove a lot of the crud from the outside. Even better if you make a few strategic cuts first. I recommend a UV 45.

UV 18, if you haven't used a vibratory tumbler you should try it. I can polish thin slabs that get too hot too fast on the Richardson's high speed sander.
@patriciamurray5612
@patriciamurray5612 2 года назад
I concur. I just throw the smaller pieces in the tumbler with 80grit & it takes off the crud so you can see what you have inside. Have some stunning pieces of agatized & opalized wood from it. Awesome for freestyle jewelry pieces.
@patriciamurray5612
@patriciamurray5612 2 года назад
HOWEVER.... as a warning... when you tumble pieces to get the crud off it creates a lot of gas. You have to watch your tumbler carefully, like every 10-15 minutes for up to an hour and pop it open to relieve the pressure or you will have a huge mess.
