Safari Condo finally made our dream trailer, the Alto F1743 EXPEDITION. Starting at just over $49K (USD) this trailer is made for tackling dirt roads and provides the comforts of home while boondocking. They loaned us this trailer to live in and test for the next year and we've been busy putting it through its paces. In this episode, we give a tour of the inside and out, showing off it's quirks and features, and compare it to the other alto models already on the road.
Thank you so much for watching. We appreciate ya! Please hit the 👍 and Subscribe buttons if you enjoyed the video (it really helps us grow). Don't hesitate to drop a comment below if you have any questions about this trailer (or any other model for that matter).

Love your videos. I can't help but think you had some input in creating the Expedition!? Wonderful insight and Safari Condo is doing great at keeping up with trends and demands! I have a 2114 on order for July 2025. I can hardly wait. You almost had me "converted" to the Expedition, but the storage is a little lacking and the fridge is too small. Looking forward to following you on your adventures!

So glad you enjoyed the video! Good thing Safari Condo didn't take our advice for creating the expedition, because we recommended adding a full-sized hot tub on the roof-top deck. In hindsight, that probably would have hurt aerodynamics. That's very exciting about your F2114! I can't believe how long the waitlist is now, but I bet you will be extremely excited on pickup day. We definitely miss that larger fridge, but fortunately the storage was not an issue like we thought. Then again, we travel pretty light. Thanks for following along!

Hmmm I don't know if that's the case or not. I imagine they'd be able to since you can stand/sit on the storage rack, but would probably be worth a call to Safari Condo to confirm. Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed the video!

Hi, Jess and Wasp dancer: As I approach retirement age, I am increasingly thinking of a travel trailer. This one looks amazing. What does it weigh when you have filled it up with everything you need? Also, if you were going to re-edit the video for the wasp dance, you could try " I Wanna Be Somebody " by WASP . Thank you for your video, I appreciate all the tips and humor!

Hey Justin and Jess! Glad to see you’re all packed up and back on the road! You two are the perfect pair to road test this awesome new Safari Condo Alto trailer. Always appreciate your honest reviews and commentary. We too got a 2019 Toyota Hi-Hy this summer, so it was great to hear about the mileage. We will probably have some more questions along the way about the towing experience in the future. Do you ever bring bikes or kayaks? We know E-bikes, especially, can add a fair amount of extra weight. let us know if you meet any other Alto owners that deal with this issue along your travels. Also, a question about the shower. Where do you hang the sprayer? Or do you just have to hold it the entire time? We’ve only camped in a pop-up with no bathroom so the 2114 we’ll take delivery of next summer will be a huge upgrade. Finally, about the door. Do you have any opinion about the porthole door versus the door available with the guillotine window.? Does the sliding screen cover the opening well enough to keep bugs out? I saw your trouble with the wasps at your campsite. 🐝😱 Thanks for taking us on your journey, and can’t wait to see where are you set up camp next!
@JustinandJess
@JustinandJess 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching! We have an inflatable kayak, which weighs 30 pounds, which I’m guessing is a bit less than the average e-bike. We were actually thinking of getting a standup paddle board as well, but didn’t, due to weight concerns. We hang the sprayer on the shower curtain track- we usually are very conscious about our water usage so we usually hold the sprayer while we’re actually using the water but the shower curtain track is great for holding it while you’re lathering up! We like having the porthole window with the screen door, just because it lets in more light and airflow. But I know there are lots of other Altoistes who prefer the guillotine windows, due to having pets that might mess up the screen. We had the guillotine window in our R1723 and thought it worked great too! Can’t wait to see how your 2114 turns out!!

Really appreciate your videos - especially the editorial views and the compare/contrast of features with the other models! I ordered a 1743X model coming off the line in December 2024. Have been a wilderness tent camper for years with a Thermarest neoair air mattress so don't know how trailer cushions sleep - curious - do you sleep on the memory foam cushions (if your version has the memory foam) without any additional topper or anything? We ordered the 4.3 cu foot 12V frig option for the extra room because we were told the upgrade solar and battery option would be sufficient for many days boon docking, rather than the 2 way 3.1 cu foot. We are the boondocks types.... Now that you've lived in it for a while, what are your thoughts about what frig you would get if you were ordering again? Also, a real down in the noise detail, but have you figured out a good trash solution? In smaller trailers, where and how you put it is a real trade - have to give up something - space/convenience/aesthetics. Thank you and please keep up the great videos.
@JustinandJess
@JustinandJess 7 месяцев назад
Thank you for your comment! We are so glad you enjoyed the video. Congrats on placing an order for the Expedition. We do not have the memory foam upgrade in our trailer and it is a huge pain point (literally) of ours. I keep saying to Jess that, if we were just a few years older, I don't think it would be possible for us to sleep in this trailer long-term. We are definitely considering getting some kind of foam topper and I would strongly encourage anyone reading this to get the memory foam upgrade when ordering their alto. We had the memory foam in our first Alto r1723 and it was all we needed to sleep comfortably. Also considering ourselves to be almost exclusively boondockers, I would absolutely recommend against getting the 12 volt fridge and instead go with the (much cheaper) two-way fridge that can run on propane. Having lived in this trailer for a few months now, I really dislike how much battery and solar is dedicated to keeping the fridge running. This may or may not be a blind spot for the sales reps you were working with, but unlike van-lifers, we park our trailer for days at a time while exploring areas across the country, and don't get the benefit of constantly topping off our battery with an alternator while driving into town like people with vans do. This isn't a one size fits all recommendation, but since you boondock like us, you probably also carry propane with you for heat, so this is a no-brainer in our opinion. We still haven't found a good solution for trash and recycling. We keep our trash in that bottom cubby below the kitchen counter as shown in the video. We keep our recycling and a paper bag in the back of our tow vehicle. It's not ideal, but it works for now. Thanks again for watching and don't hesitate to ask us if you have any other questions. See you on the road!
@evelynrollins2917
@evelynrollins2917 7 месяцев назад
@UprootedTraveler Thank you for your response. Coming back to the oracle (that would be you all!) again, as we are still trying to get smart on the frig options. We bought a little 16' canned ham (Shasta 2015 reissue) for the interim before we get our 1743X. It has a 3 way frig and we are trying to sort out how real the "has to be level" req't for that type of frig. Have a bluetooth thermometer on order that will plot the temp so we can get a better handle on it., as it didn't seem to be reliably working but are blind without that data. Did your prior trailers have a propane frig and did you have any issues/concerns with the "has to be level" requirement? Granted, our Shasta is not as well built as the Altos... Do you have a concern about the standard 1743X 2 way (propane/shore) maintaining temp during transit? We live in CA and anticipate being on the road hours between destinations out here. Thanks for your patience with all these detailed questions! Evelyn
@JustinandJess
@JustinandJess 6 месяцев назад
@@evelynrollins2917 the 2 way (propane/shore) fridge in our old R1723 performed AMAZINGLY and we never had issues maintaining temp (including during transit) even in the hottest temperatures. While we used to drive with it running on propane for years, we stopped after we learned it was illegal in many states, so be sure to check the laws in yours. It wasn't an issue though as it did a great job at holding the temperature even after a day of driving.

Hey great video. How does the towing compare to the more streamlined Alto and is there much difference in fuel mileage and range?
@JustinandJess
@JustinandJess 4 месяца назад
I've never towed the standard F1743, but I have to imagine the extra weight and decreased aerodynamics of the Expedition makes a noticeable difference. This is totally a guess, but I imagine we would get four to five miles per gallon better gas mileage if towing the lighter, F1743. Thanks so much for watching! Glad you enjoyed our video.

Hi guys, In comparing the 1743 to the 1743 Expedition - how would you rank the easier-to-use awning in your list of upgrades(more solar, more ground clearance with beefier tires)? Asking b/c we're drawn to the lower weight and aerodynamics of the original 1743 for non live-in recreational use but not sure about the original awning set-up. Thanks :)
@JustinandJess
@JustinandJess 2 месяца назад
Using the fabric awning with a keder rail was a real pain in the butt so we almost never used it unless we were camping someplace for many days and we knew that high wind wasn't going to be an issue. We are absolutely in love with the retractable awning on the expedition. So often, we will want to roll it back in because of wind gusts and its effortless to set up and retract in minutes. It's also really nice that it has the very bright LED light bar which makes the outdoor space much more usable at night. Thanks for watching!

We are considering buying an alto (not sure if it will be the expedition or the 2114) and we noticed your tow vehicle is a highlander hybrid…..this is our dream suv but we were worried about going up mountains….. how do you find the vehicle handles long inclines? Do you wish you had more pull power or breaking power? Do your breaks over heat with extended use? Thank you for your channel, we really are enjoying it. ❤️🇨🇦
@JustinandJess
@JustinandJess 5 месяцев назад
It does just fine on long inclines, but I do wish it had a little more pulling power. I find myself slowing down significantly on steep mountains (uphill), but overheating has never been an issue, the brakes do great because of the hybrid re-gen motors, and I typically drive slow anyway. Please keep in mind, a Highlander Hybrid will only work for you if you travel VERY light and are okay with going slow. We check off both of those boxes and the gas savings are tremendous. So glad you are enjoying our videos and good luck with your search for an alto 😊

@JustinandJess
@JustinandJess 3 месяца назад
Yes! And it's worth mentioning, this trailer's seven pin harness is not hooked up on pin 7 (typically used for backup lights) or pin 2 (typically used for trailer brakes). That's because this trailer does not have backup lights and it's electric brakes are powered off of the trailer battery (as opposed to being powered by the tow vehicle through the tow harness). The trailers battery is however charged via the 7 pin's 12 volt auxiliary line.

Yes, it's very difficult. Your best bet is the Altoistes Marketplace Facebook group. But know what you want ahead of time, turn on notifications, and be prepared to make an offer within minutes of one being listed because sometimes they sell in hours or less. The demand is super high because of the quality and used Altos frequently sell for more used than new because you're skipping the 2+ year waiting list for a new one.

Never! *Knocks on wood* Altogether, we've put about 70,000 mi on our two Highlander hybrids, and the first 50,000 or on the original '06 Highlander hybrid that we purchased used with 133k mi. Obviously, results will vary between manufacturers. If anything, I'd say that's a testament to extraordinary Japanese engineering. I think it's so cool that our 16-year-old, high mileage SUV was able to tow near Max towing capacity for so many miles without any issue. We traded it in simply because it was so high mileage and we are planning on doing a lot of driving in the coming years, but I always wonder how long it would have lasted. 🤔
