So much progress has been made for LGBTQ rights in the U.S. But, many who grew up and spent decades living in the shadow of legally-sanctioned oppression are scarred.
And of those who were able to live 'out of the closet' when they were younger, many now feel the need to hide their authentic selves as they become frailer or dependent with age. If you were vulnerable and didn't know who to trust to treat you well, wouldn't it feel safer just to stay on the down-low?
