In this video, I show you four ways that I store bulk foods. Buying in bulk is a surefire way to drop the cost per ounce of shelf stable items to rock bottom. I regularly save between 30 and 70 percent when I buy 10, 25, or 50 pound bags of oats, beans, and grains.

We have a friend who use only glass - because her family is concerned with the chemical nature of plastic. She had a pretty large family, too. Very challenging, but she had a a great system for sanitizing jars and keeping everything organized.

Great tip about getting almost free/free food grade buckets! I went to two bakeries, one sold me five 3 gallon buckets for $1.25 (total for all five) and the other bakery gave me six 5 gallon buckets for free! (both with lids) I will use the smaller ones in my kitchen and the larger ones for long-term food storage! So excited! Brand new food grade buckets are upward of $7 each without lids!

Someone in a comment below asked about cooking old beans that don't soften as usual. A channel called Deep South Bama with Mr. Tom gave a method to cook old beans. Please look it up in case my notes are wrong. I don't remember if he covered this first step but clean the beans (look for rocks and rinse the beans). My notes: 1 lb. beans (2 cups) to 6 cups water, soak 24 hours, drain. Boil more water and then add the soaked beans. It is important to boil the water first and then add the beans to the boiling water as that releases an enzyme to soften the beans, and it was a scientifically tested method. Bring the water back to a boil for two minutes. Turn off heat, add two teaspoons of baking soda and cover the pot to soak for one hour. Drain and rinse. Add water again, boil, and then simmer 2 hrs.

The local Mennonite scratch and dent grocery store in our area gives away gallon sized glass jars, plastic jars and pickle buckets. You sometimes can luck out and score a cart full like I did last week, but you can also call and give your name. Tell them how many you want and then they will call you when they have them saved up

@@UndertheMedian i had no idea that they did it until my Amish friend told me about it. Apparently, it was a well kept secret. In the last couple of years, the scratch and dent store opened another location that is too far for the Amish to go. So I'm rolling in jars and buckets because hardly anyone else wants them. Lol

I loved all the tips; especially the newspaper one. Do you know if putting grains in the freezer creates condensation once you take them out? Will mold grow in the grains or is there a drying process? I use bay leaves to keep the hitchhiker bugs away but interested in the freezing process.
@UndertheMedian
@UndertheMedian 3 года назад
I've never had a problem with mold growing, but you are right. Your bag needs to be sealed completely. One solution is to move your grains to smaller freezer bags first and then place those bags into the freezer for a couple of days. The freezer bags should not allow moisture to build up. I know some preppers use an oxygen absorber in their containers. We use up our bulk items pretty quickly and that could very well be why we haven't had any notable problems.

Love your videos. We are starting to store food also. I have a question and it may be stupid but I am really trying to do this right. I bought 2 20 pound bags of long grain rice and I have 25 pounds of sugar. Do I need to freeze these for 72 hours 1st before storing them. We have the 5 pound food grade buckets and lids also, as well as the gadget you recommend to open the lid. Now I just don't know if I have to freeze them 1st or if I could just dump them in the bucket. Help please...🤔

I noticed a few of mine can open easily, even when apply a lot of force to close it, meaning I can get them open without any tool. Do you think that it is compromising my long term food storage?
