Living in Oahu the biggest thing is not leaving things in plain site of value....place in your trunk. Car break in happens a lot there but like mentioned in this video...over a million people live on Oahu and you are dealing with city life issues you get anywhere. I currently live across the river from St. Louis and crime day or night has significantly risen the past two years or so. Shootings, car break ins, robbery, you name it. Oahu was fine as I did not ever leave valuables out in plain site....on the beach or in my truck. I also showed respect to the locals and engaged them in conversations about their beautiful island, or talked to people fishing and they truly appreciate that. The spirit of Aloha will be shown to you. Be sensible with your stuff as a tourist and park where there are cars and keep things with you or in your trunk out of sight. Love the island! Crime is a given but that's the nature of man ....there are those who do wrong anywhere you go.
I grew up on oahu 45 years. I had a full time job , yet I did side jobs constantly. Painting, yard work, lite construction, coconut tree trimming, welding repairs, swap meet, surfboard repairs, grow pot, and more. Rent is high, even for a small shack. Condo living is the safest but your car is vulnerable to break in.
If you respect the land and respect the people Hawaii is safe. Just don't come here acting like you own the place. Check your "mainland attitude" at the shore. Behave like a respectful visitor and you will be welcomed back with open arms. -Aloha
thats whats i really wanted to say im moving to oahu in july if possible and truly we are not looking for saefty because just being respecful and friendly i guess is the key to be welcome😊 and also safety haha
Just a suggestion. When talking about the islands and all these places could you provide a large map. Perhaps over your left shoulder. Would really help for us new to the islands. Thanks
It would help if you put up a map showing the location with the weird names so we have a better idea of where you are talking about and actually seeing the Name/city/site in print.
I was born in Honolulu during the Great Depression. I left Hawaii at a young age because I couldn't stand the mentality of the local people and there is no room to run. I miss the beach, the mountains, the food and my relatives, but other than that, I made the right choice.
I'd guess Maui as well. I lived there a year. I lived on Oahu for 5. I never felt unsafe on Maui, but I was in Kahana area, and it's full of rich retirees. Kahului at night may be a little worse, but I think it's quite calm as well. Maui No Ka Oi for sure...
Interesting observation Jeff. I live on Maui and feel safe here. Visited Oahu several times, too busy for me. Haven't been to Kauai, but I am guessing it's safe as well compared to Oahu. But yes, Maui is safe and I agree with you :) - Liza
Hope all you guy's are well in Hawaii, i'm writing this May 7th 2018 and hoping that lava will stop flowing and everyone is o.k. I know there was damage I'm just praying no lives lost. I don't get to catch the news often kinda busy, take care everyone.
Hi Jeff, I've been watching your videos for a couple of months since we've decided to visit Hawaii. There was a pretty good deal at the Waikoloa so we decided our first visit would be the Big Island. We have a couple of young kids below 8 years old and we are visiting this November for 10 days. Do you have any more suggestions on what to do for families? I'm a little worried about about dangerous driving conditions on the Big Island but we don't want to let that hold us back. We are likely going to day trip to certain spots. Coming from Canada.
Ryan you will be good driving there as long as you are driving responsible. It's only dangerous if you are irresponsible texting and driving or drinking and driving. As long as you are responsible then no worries at all
We stayed there as well. 5 fatal accidents in less than a week. Be careful and alert. Beautiful place I had my fill after a week. I'd come back though.
For another safety issue, was advised by friend that bicycle and motorcycle ripoffs are rife in Honolulu. One friend of his got his bike ripped off five times. Wondering whether there are reliable anti-ripoff measures you can take or whether perhaps walking and the bus might be a better alternative? :)
I keep thinking about living in Hawaii because I love swimming in the ocean but I wonder how safe it would be to swim everyday on a beach like Sandy Beach in Oahu. My main concern would be sharks but I'm sure the lifeguards would say drowning is a much bigger concern. What's your opinion about sharks ?
For some reason lots of people get bitten and eaten by sharks on Maui but not so much on the other Islands. If you can find a protected Lagoon with an offshore Reef usually sharks will not enter these places.
Thank you. We are going to Hawaii for a second time in January. We are visiting Oahu and kaui. any information about whale watching and things to do in January thank you
good video.. I plan on moving there next year and trying to save . I am from texas texarkana tx. but im .just moved here to Durango Colorado 6 months by next year I want to live there for a year or so. any advice helps me and my buddy out.
Safety is the least of our worries ... keep hearing about bacterias and heard “don’t eat the lettuce”. Also the enormous centipedes, scorpions and stuff. What’s up with all that? 👀
Well we all know it's not Chicago or Detroit so I'm ok with that ..shit my home city of Minneapolis has all the people from Chicago here..I'm sure hawaii is far safer .
There was a place where all the homeless people would rent a storage container the size of a oven or really small for their stuff or it would get stolen
Chris F and you can get mail at the post office general delivery wherever you're at where I was staying on the big island isn't even there anymore ...Kalapana
+Island Hopper TV When you warned about drinking with locals at night..This really got my attention in the video. Just what exactly has happened when people drank with locals at night? Fights? Robberies? Please give details because I think this is something important to focus on..especially for really friendly people like me who would enjoy drinking with locals at night. Thanks!
Thanks for the response. I'm new to your channel..but would suggest you making a video with only all the cons about living in Hawaii since you seem to have covered all the pro's about living their. I like to be prepared for the worst..and since I'm considering retiring their it would be good to know. Thanks again for making info packed vids without the fluff.
driving in kauai is crazy anymore. walking is to lol. I almost got hit trying to cross the crosswalk. it said walk so I went but so did a lady trying to get out onto the road from Safeway. it was scary. be careful driving and walking.
WW Suwannee Nihao is native only unless invitation given. But Molokai is not a good place to live until you get to know people because it's a lot of locals who doesn't want new people. It's best to learn more before you go and rent but don't buy property. For several reasons. Aloha is strong.
I spent a week on Molokai about 10 years ago and I got a lot of stink eye. It was sketchy some locals were very friendly and some were openly hostile. The hills have eyes🍻😎
Love Kauai my favorite island! I’m from Oakland Ca so anywhere is safer! We have a lot of gun violence out here and have lost many friends! But just like any where you go respect the locals don’t start shit watch your surroundings! And you will be ok! But come with a chip on your shoulder you will get tested especially where I’m from!
My family is looking to move to the big island within two years. My hubby grew up there I have never been. I am worried about my gay daughter, are LGBT kids afe there? She is a great kid, community minded, respectful of other cultures and religions. Where we live now its a bit scary for her. I am high on the spectrum for autism, and am really introverted and quiet. It takes me a lot longer to acclimate to new people and places. I am worried people will mistake that for coldness. Are people ok there with nice, but quiet people who keep to themselves? (People on the mainland are not a big fan of my introverted chillness. lol They sadly mistake it for coldness.) I spend most of my time volunteering for tree plantings, tree care, propagating endangered wild plants, caring for wild animals, trash clean ups... it is how I feel most comfortable socializing. Are people who like to volunteer liked there? Or are we seen as suspicious like on the mainland? Are there opportunities to help in tree plantings there? I have been learning about Native Hawaiin tree species and can not WAIT to meet them in person! We are not a Christian family, I am Hindu my hubby is secular. I had heard that the Christian community in Hawaii can be a bit... uhm... overwhelming. Will I as a Hindu be tolerated? (not so much where I live right now. It would be nice to wear a summer saree out and about without being yelled at.) As for land, I would love to buy land that needs love and rehabing. See above, I am obsessed with planting trees and have a lot of experience rehabbing contaminated land back to wild, or community garden even. Any thoughts on a close to town, somewhat secluded, affordable land that needs a weirdo to love it? Sorry for so many questions!!! I feel like my family may be a bit strange, but we have a lot of love to give to a community and do our best to be a good part of our community.
Google sex offenders, like any other big city. 18 in 2 miles in kapolei, Oahu. Homeless want to be near libraries they’re sleeping in them, washing clothes in sink & in toilets, claiming the desks& computers. Homeless go to warm areas.
Hey Barbara, not sure what has you so angry or aggressive posting so many negative comments on my videos like you are right now??? I am not perfect at all, but wow the way you are commenting on these videos as if every thing said in these videos is pointless and not worth listening to and or doesn't provide value is contrary to what others have said. Like I said I am not perfect but you going on the attack on this channel like this is odd.
+Hao Lau This really got my attention in the video. Just what exactly has happened when Haole's drank with locals at night? Fights? Robberies? Please give details because I think this is something important to focus on..especially for really friendly people like me who would enjoy drinking with locals.
Nightbird I was there. And I am talking about partying with locals on the beach in isolated areas. I am saying that as a man who was warned by others many times. Yes I am saying that bad things can happen. Worst thing that happened to me was having my stuff stolen. Not saying that all local Hawaiian people are bad. I met wonderful people in the four months I lived in Kona and Hilo. I am saying that I was told by the white people who lived there that there was trouble sometimes with the locals getting drunk and I could get beat up and thrown in the ocean if I wasn't careful. They can have a short trigger if there is a misunderstanding. And even if you don't have a problem being in situations like getting drunk with people you just met in the dark at night I would not want to test it out. And women really should not be putting themselves in any adventures where they are alone and drinking with anyone they don't know well. As far as people dying.....well people go missing in Hawaii just like everywhere else. Hawaii is one of the safest places on Earth. But when traveling it's always best to exercise caution. Aloha
+Richard Vass Thanks for the explanation. I think it is important for people to spell out potential problems..instead of making people guess..and that is exactly what you did so I appreciate it. Many people coming from the mainland have no clue about these things. They don't know about the short temper..about the poverty..and what could happen to you. The only warning I received from a friend who is from Hawaii is to not hang out on the beaches at night because you may get robbed. But the drinking with the locals thing was new to me..and I feel an important point..since on the mainland drinking with strangers in a bar at night doesn't usually lead to problems. Everybody pretty much knows all the good and beautiful of Hawaii. But we need to disclose what isn't so great about it too. If you have any other warnings I'd love to hear them..because I am considering retiring their and want to know everything I could face. Thanks again.
