Sail Life - Hatch cover, boot boat show and DJI Osmo Pocket fail

This weekend I checked out the boat show in Dusseldorf. I would have liked more DIY and I lost a lot of footage because of very poor audio on my brand new DJI Osmo pocket.

Dang it! It looks like RU-vid are dragging their feet again. If 4K/HD is not available when you try watching this video please try again in a few hours. Sorry guys! It's been 8 hours since I uploaded the video. Normally it only takes them a few hours (max!) to finish processing the HD and 4K versions.

I think the majority of us understand that you are doing you best to bring us great videos. Investing in the Osmo Pocket demonstrates your commitment to all of us. Thank you for that! Maybe a separate audio recorder, voice over, or even a different gimbal would solve the issue. I have no doubt you will come up with a solution you will be happy with. Already looking forward to the next video!

Hi Mads, I discovered your channel recently and I've just completed almost 40 hours of glorious, glorios binge watching! I have to say that yours is one of the best sailing related channels that I follow. It's geat to see you working on some of the projects that I have in mind for my own boat and its always encouraging to get an insight into what I might be letting myself in for. One of the things I like about your channel is your stoicism (I think we should make you an honorary Brit :-) ) especially when you discovered the full extent of your "Joker". I really hope you find a good solution to that. I'm super interested in the pedestal rebuild as what you have there looks to be the same basic pedestal that I have - although mine doesn't have the engine stop lever on it (that's on the panel with the power and start buttons). My broblem is that the engine control is not centred correctly and when the engine is in neutral the lever is about 30 degrees forward. I tried to recentre it by removing the grub screw in the hope of removing the lever to reposition it but it just wouldn't budge - now I know why! Also the grab rail is loose because the little plastic clip "doohickies" don't fit into the top plate properly. Actually, to be more precise, the centres of the vertical parts of the rail are wider that the centres of the holes in the top plate. I have a 1988 Sigma 362 which, although basically sound, needs a bit of TLC (but nothing on the scale that you are undertaking) to get her "looking spiffy" again. I loved your engine compartment refit and I think I'm going to do something similar. The only other major projects are going to be a galley refit/build, the removal of the vanity unit in the fore cabin to create more storage and a rewire and replumb of the whole boat. Outside I'm going to replace the running (and probably standing) rigging and investigate the condition of the inside of the rudder. I have 18 months to complete everything as I've put my name down for ARC 2020 so she has to be ready for that.

The audio issues were not all that bad, but noticable. In fact, I started to get a llittle concerned assuming they were an issue on my end between my phone and my Fusion radio on the boat. I switched to Bluetooth on the Fusion radio early on in the video so my wife could listen to it in the V-berth. Then the issues started happening right after. It didn't even occur to me at first that the issue could be on your end. Your audio is always perfect. I can't remember the last time in the years you have been doing Sail Life that you had any issue like this. Don't sweat it. You are batting close to 1000. One slightly imperfect audio is pretty good all things considered.

Mads, firstly - I can't wait to see how you do the rudder. Then I will know what I should have done with mine - too late now. Also, I noted the Seaglaze brochure. I fitted bespoke Seaglaze clamp-in portlights last year. The templating process was very easy and they fit perfectly. Shame about the Osmo - it looked great.

I know Düßeldorf quite well (my wife lived there for a year) but I was really surprised to find out how big the boat show is. I would have expected one of the world’s biggest boat shows to be a bit closer to the sea. I know the Rhine is a huge river, but it’s not a sea.

Mads, the Osmo looks great! We'll survive the sacrifice in quality/audio if you enjoy using the super convenient handheld, gimballed spiffyness of the new doodad!
@TheEmporiumOutdoors

I also picked up a DJI OSMO Pocket for my RU-vid videos and found the same issues with the audio (kinda expected it). They have an accessory to allow 3.5mm audio into the camera that is not available quite yet. I plan to mate this with a RODE Videomicro mic. I also picked up the wireless base and the wheel controller doohicky which work really well. Overall the shots I can get with it far out way the cons but it won't be replacing my main camera anytime soon. Again thanks for the videos, they are always very enjoyable!!! Best wishes Michael & Esme (my dog) :)

Hiya,19.00 here in the UK, no notification but the video is on notifications, strange. Nice video, a change is as good as glorious sanding... or so they say. A video on the specialist hand tools you mentioned would be good plus the not so good tools. Not to slate but to inform about why we may not want to buy them, because... It would be your own view only not a hatchet job on a company or product, just un-suitability for this use. The heated workshop looks good, enough space and power for three plus someone to help lift or inform. Keep up the great work and take care...

Hi Mads - tascam makes a small onbody lav recorder that is great to use with cameras where there is no possibility for wireless or hotshoe mount. I bought one for around 1000 kr. Only downside is that you then need to sync the audio in post, but it resolves the audio issue.

I can’t speak for the safety aspect of toenails, but my boat doesn’t even have one, just a raised fibreglass gunwale. Most of the boats where I sail on the Great Lakes have toe rails that offer the advantage of a place to secure blocks and rigging, but the disadvantage of trapping water that results in leaks in the deck.

So you like the osmo (sp.?) for video ,but not audio? Is it easy to use a different audio source when you shoot and it will synchronize? Still enjoyed the vid. . I didn’t like the toe rail weld along the edge. It did not look clean. Wonder if it would be possible to have the weld on the down side and some filler that would result in a clean outside corner. Thoughts?

I was there at the boat show in Dusseldorf 30 years ago. Sorry the footage was bad. I would like to have seen if it was still as amazing and large as I remember it. From the map you showed it still looks like each building still has a different theme. One nothing but large sail boats, another nothing but large motorboats and another nothing but windsurfing etc. If it isn't the largest boat show in the world it has to be a close second.

Boot DD is fantastic, the world’s largest indoor boat show. 1500 boats this year, I think. But you’re right, Boot is really not a DIY-show and the DIY-value has become lower each year (I’ve been there ten times, part of my job). But it’s possible: last year I ordered Coppercoat for my NC39 at close to half the price back home. But for dedicated DIY-people, I guess Mets Amsterdam is far better.

Sound is Louder on the Osmo, never had to turn you DOWN before, not even with Power Tools...I've Always had to Turn It Up and Rip The Knob Off to Hear you. Yes, I have cheap speakers on my tower, lol. Lucky to have THEM.. But the vid looked Good, just Different. Save the Osmo to use in tight spaces, like when you start fixing the Joker. You';re NOT Twentieth Century-Fox, Mads, you're a DIY BOATBUILDER. We don't NEED to be able to Count the hairs in your nose or ears, lol. Spider-cracks in Gelcoat is Fine, lol...Sawdust in the air is Great, we don't need to be able to SEE the PARTICLES, lol. You're doing Great. That toerail you showed us was what I was imagining, only with the Uprights closer together, too small an opening for a whole foot to fit through. Catamaran Guy needs a BIGGER Boat, doesn't he? LMAO! That thing is HUGE! It looked like a pair of Frigates or Corvettes sitting beside each other! When he gets ready to Arm her, let me know, I have a Cannon Foundry in the town out from me, they make anything from 4-pounders to 32-pounder Carronades for his Broadside guns, lol. And Mortars, too. Brand New, Stronger than the Originals. In Iron, Steel, or Bronze.

Just a thought -- have you considered CNC milling the toe rail from something like King Starboard polyethylene sheet from 6.4mm to 38mm thick. Any table based CNC wood router would do it with ease. It can be heat formed to follow the curve to the deck. Pocket screws and heat welding can be used for jointing. It just can't be adequately glued with any known adhesive. see kingplastic dot com -- not affiliated Craig
