Athena looks good with her new bottom all refreshed. Can't wait to see her copper pants on. Mads, you are a dedicated, motivated fellow. To put out these vlogs every week while working on the boat and holding down a full time job is incredible. And the attention to detail is second to none.

I was expecting the cat to be stuck to one side of the hull in the morning when mads came in, like that wallpaper paste advert :)

What a fabulous job you have done. Please don't apologize for the yammering on, your reasons and explanations behind everything you do is one of the best bits about your channel. I am an addict, keep it up mate it's great.

It's amazing how you can spend months on the hull and you only see incremental visual changes. Then in one day, you add a barrier coat and everything looks 100 times better. Such is life of the DIYer. Great video.

Aww, Mads, I have been away from the You Tubes for so long I forgotten how amazing your videos are. Just taking a minute out from my day to say "You Rock!" and, if it is of any interest, our 3 layers of epoxy and 422 on Kasandra show absolutely no return of the blisters, two years on.

Since you are the dedicated diy’r, I suppose you don’t have the time I (retired, 72) do. I watch many different sailing channels and you might appreciate hearing how often Mads and Athena come up in comments. You are a star sir! Appreciated for the quality of the work you do, acceptance of mountains of work and doing that work to perfection. That’s how famous you are. Now if all of us would just tell one other person, the “Saga of Mads”, your subscribers would double in short order. I would be nice to see you rewarded. For the the amazing videos you make and your dedication. It’s a joy to see your channel.

A beautiful compromise... Was I the only one who noticed that Mads has compromised in this latest video? The rapid box opening was completed with scissors rather than his characteristic folding knife. Ava you are having an effect on him! Mads, your videos are awesome and I know you realise how closely people watch them! Keep up the good work.

Mads, I have to confess I've been screaming at the monitor to say "put it in the water!!!". After seeing the amazing result from the barrier coat and the satisfaction and sense of security it provides, I understand. Fantastic job. Still can't wait to see her in the salt water, but when it's there, all of this will be so worth it.

It's always amazing to me how process logistics really make the difference on how well a task comes out in the end. I didn't mind the "rambling on" at all. All those things matter.

'Eleven?' Oh, Mads, you are so good at not using overused movie quotes. But, then again, that one is an eleven on any scale. Totally forgiven.
@SteelDoesMyWill
@SteelDoesMyWill 5 лет назад
MADS! Those brown 3M pads are WAY too coarse for taking off amine blush! They will actually sand and EAT away your fresh spiffy new barrier coat! I use those to sand and polish stainless steel and other metals, those 3m pads take off a surprising amount of material VERY quickly. Granted, your orbital sander runs at a much slower RPM than my pneumatic sanders and grinders, but the coarseness of brown is still much for cured epoxy. I would HIGHLY recommend that you test first with the Red 3m pads (medium) and the Blue (fine). I believe the Red will be plenty to take off and key the surface before anti-foul.
@CheersWarren
@CheersWarren 5 лет назад
Kraken I agree I've had a box of coarse hand pads for years and they never get used much and never for any fine work ....but cured epoxy is very hard so it might be just the thing .I repaired a couple of keels and it was hard work sanding between coats as it cured slow being a lead keel . I would use the pads wet as they don't clog and stay sharp longer but that's really messy so not many people do that . It will be interesting to see what he does! Cheers Warren
@Pat.Mustard
@Pat.Mustard 5 лет назад
Yeah, don’t do it Mads. We used those to grind aluminium back when I was a welder. They’re more like gentle grinding disks than a scotch pad.
@misterprofessor3511
@misterprofessor3511 5 лет назад
You guys are missing the point. Removing more material will necessitate adding more coats of epoxy, which means more processes and more multi-part episodes, which is really the goal here. Add 2mm, remove 1.95mm. Repeat. Never go sailing.
@geraldhenrickson7472
@geraldhenrickson7472 5 лет назад
In an orbital sander I think they may work quite well. On a disc sander, even at a low RPM, they would be far too much. I guess we will see.
@andrewwilliams9419
@andrewwilliams9419 5 лет назад
Yeah I have used those also and they will take off a lot of material for sure

Good job, good friends!! Two comments: WEST SYSTEM set you up nicely. That's a few thousand dollars worth of materials. They are the best by far; all I use. Second: When applying tape stick down the first 2", then walk in the direction you want to stick it to, pulling out about 8' from the roll. Line it up with your pencil line from that point (8' away) sighting down the tape and pencil line and just stick it to the hull from there. If it's off, just pull it outwards away from the hull, realign and re-stick.Then pull out another 8' without breaking it, and repeat the process. By doing it this way you avoid the waves from sticking it in 1' increments, and will end up with a much straighter line. Hope that's clear...

Oooo, I cringed when you opened the box of 3M pads. May want to double check and make sure they're not too coarse. Just getting caught up on your videos of the Athena refit. My Gawd man, I would have lit fire to her by now. Surly she didn't wasn't designed this way and some of these little gems are modifications made during her lifetime that have gone bad. I know you have to really enjoy doing the work on her otherwise you could have gotten a 2nd job and bought a new boat. I'm truly impressed with your patients and attention to detail. Athena will be the loveliest, most sea worthy, and most modified Warrior ever to sail. I've really enjoyed the videos so far and plan to watch till the end. At some point I'm sure she'll get back in the water. Fair winds.

With all of the sailing channels I have subscribed to, there are only three or four that I truly look forward to each week. Your Vlogs are most definitely in this group. Following your journey has been inspiring, to say the least. Your dedication and attention to detail is stellar. Your insistence on fixing absolutely every little detail that you find wrong is a true indicator of your character. And, the fact that you are constantly researching, learning, and asking questions is really paying off! Athena is really coming together beautifully. Keep up the great work! And, for the record, you have well surpassed "Pretty Dang Spiffy"!

Hey guys....I'm sure West systems support might have made that recommendation on the sanding pads. If you know Mads like I do he has definatley consulted on that issue . But I love to see all the passion we have for Mads ...its like we all have a vested interest😁 In fact I think we should start planning a splash party for Athena🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩😏😏😏😏

Mads you should be in the boat building business I think you would make millions. That is one Spiffy looking hull and the final coats haven't even gone on yet. When this boat is finished it is going to look brand spanking new you could probably sell it make a profit and buy an older larger boat and start again. I have watched your channel from the beginning and you have really become a pro in front of that camera.
