🇬🇧 Ensuring this tragedy never happens again!
In Torres Vedras, a Danish sailboat leaving Peniche, with 4 crew members, 3 men and a woman lost their lives on the beaches
After ignoring several warnings from fishermen and locals.
#skippersessentials
The sailboat flew the Danish flag and left the Peniche marina this morning with four people on board.
“Upon arrival at the scene, it was found that some debris, allegedly from the vessel, had reached the shore, along with three survivors of the sinking, two men and one woman, all without life jackets and in a state of cardiac arrest. Members of the Torres Vedras Volunteer Fire Department immediately began resuscitation maneuvers,” says the statement from the National Maritime Authority (AMN9).
“The Navy spokesperson later confirmed, however, that the four people, all believed to be foreign nationals, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Searches are being carried out for possible missing crew members.
Although the circumstances surrounding the boat's sinking are still being investigated, the national press highlighted that the weather was particularly dangerous for maritime navigation this morning.
Lisbon, where the municipality of Torres Vedras is located, is one of the seven districts of mainland Portugal that is under red warning until 3 pm due to rough seas, with waves from the northwest expected to reach a significant height of seven to eight meters and a maximum height of 14/15 meters, says Lusa.
The remaining districts are Porto, Viana do Castelo, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga.”
By Michael Bruxo.
The bodies and the sailboat arrived on the coast this morning, around 11 am, Portuguese Navy spokesman José Sousa Luís told the Lusa agency.
What the hell were these elderly people thinking about?
No vests!

It's plain to see that the way the boat way plodding along as comfortable as possible instead of heeling over hard trying to get away from the shore shows that the captain didn't really know how to handle a sailboat. This is a classic example of how people start boating thinking that a boat is a caravan with a mast. Most cruisers never sailed as a kid in dinghies that tip over if you dont know how to balance them or have never raced trying to use a boat's full potential, no motor. The captain's supposedly experience was probably one day repeated 20 years in front of his home marina and not 20 years of various different situations, seas, waves, winds and tides. If you observe well the boat seems to sailing in an abandoned way. Either everyone was asleep, drunk, seasick or hangover from the previous night's cheap wine. The fact that they were not wearing lifejackets shows they were unaware of the danger their floating caravan was in. Worse, they were firmly warned by locals in the marina not to go out that day but surely the €150.000 Bavaria's arrogance would prove everybody wrong.

That's a lot of assumptions for someone who wasn't on board! In fact, I believe the captain was trying to get upwind. When a boat is heavily reefed, as that one was, and as he HAD to be in that wind, no sailboat can be as efficient as it needs to be to claw to windward. In his case, he needed to use the engine to assist the sails and get off shore as soon as possible. I don't know why he didn't use his engine, or if he was using it, why he didn't get the nose of the boat out to sea. If the sails start flogging, drop them and use the engine only. This is the classic case of being on a lee shore in a storm. Yes, he never should have put to sea in those conditions. Listen to the locals.

From what I see in the video the boat is moving at only 3-4 knots because it had too little sail especially the mainsail which is needed to point the bow upwind.This results in the boat not moving at its optimal speed creating a big problem, leeway. The keel is more effective at holding a course the faster the boat moves. Additionally the boat had a fully enclosed bimini which has just about as much area as the reefed sails adding to a probable 1,5-2 knot leeway, also caused by the wave action. This leeway is not apparent when viewed from the boat, it just feels like you are moving foward. Surely no electronic tool was being used to confirm the true heading as they were drifting sideways towards shore. The fact that they didnt have the motor working, as a last resource in this case, no lifejackets on and apparently no one on watch shows they were completely unaware of their situation, probably thinking they were on a more parallel course to the shore. On such big waves, given the high leeway, they should have been beating against the wind, pointing way from land, just to keep a parallel course to land. This was not done because of the uncomfortable, slamming, water over the bow motion. To me this shows the lack of experience of the skipper in such onshore conditions, being irresponsable not to keep a constant watch, not constantly checking his position on the gps and not steering an initial course to quite a few miles away from land in the first place. I could be wrong of course, but probably only if there was some physical problem with someone on board which attracted everyone's full attention.

@@TheAdventuresofPrinceDiamond He is not struggling to get off the lee shore.. as his boat is making good way with eased sheets. He is paralleling the coast for some bizarre reason.. His boat will tack through 90deg (in normal conditions) and 120deg under eased sheets. A 90 deg tack puts him perpendicular to the shore line and directly out into deeper & safer water. A 120 deg tack does the same. Novice sailors want to be close to land when things get really rough, experienced sailors head out to sea (deep water), or have stayed in port if not out there already.

I am a sailor wit thousands of nautical miles in my keel water. I sailed exactly the same stretch. I think of the parents and friends who lost their beloved ones. every sailor who sees this video and has experienced similar conditions knows that this is a very dangerous situation. All the good proposals in the comments are totally right. All of us learn just by seeing this video even without comments,,, Nobody knows about the situation on board, were they injured, seasick couldn't they star the motor. RIP to the unfortunate crew. Apparently the boat is in good shape, as the skipper is making way and can control the heading. It’s very difficult to conclude that this serious incident is not the consequence of a series of misjudgments and bad decisions. In the same video you can see another sailboat sailing south and further offshore, in a much safer situation. Bad passage planning is the phrase that summarizes a whole concatenation of bad decisions. I feel bad writing this, provided people have died. I don’t consider myself a super experienced sailor. One thing I know are both my boat’s and my own limitations. This unfortunate event should serve us all not only as a reminder of the power of the sea, but also as a learning. Fair winds…

you can read, that: 1.)they were warned by lokal fishermen to leave harbour in these conditions. 2.) every skipper knows - or should know before sailing there - that it's very dangerous close to land at the coast of Portugal with an incoming swell from the Atlantic. Because of the breaking waves. 3.) So when deciding to leave the harbour - against the advice of the locals- your aim has to be to pass the dangerous zone of breaking waves near the shore as soon as possible. So you have to trim your sails to go upwind( which they apparently did not) and use enough sail to force the boat diagonal against the waves(which they did not ). Alternatively they could have used a technique which is ironically/ tragically known to me as " danish going upwind". Which means using a small sailarea with not much heel and the engine running and helping for good progress. 4.) the course so near the shore and near the breaking waves is completely not understandable. And they say that 2 men onboard had a lot of sailing expierience. Unbelievable. The tragic end was written on the wall.

This is a good summation. "The Sailors had good experience".. maybe in moderate weather and not on a Lee Shore in a Break Zone.. A lot of people have been driving daily for decades and are still bad drivers.. Time at an activity does not directly correlate to skill.

I remember this accident being broadcasted in national news, in Portugal. It happened in the wake of super strong atlantic storm Ciaran. Orange and red alerts were in place, for very large W to NW seas, with waves expected to reach 15m. If you're in the safety of an harbour, why do you decide to sail out, in such conditions? Just let the storm fade away, in my opinion. Condolences for the families of the 4 dead persons.

they are there because clearly the person in charge had no real idea what they were doing. Why not more sails area? why is the main not out at. The boat is not even healing. Lack of Sail Area is not the main issue, they are making 3-4kts of boatspeed. They are not heeling because they are not trying to point out to sea (for some bizarre reason..) The sea state is rough, however the wind strength is not excessive. Just poor decisions by the Skipper.

On the surface it looks like one big problem existed, they were too close to shore for whatever reason A sailing vessel healing in excess of 15⁰ doesn't indicate safety, stability and control, to the contrary, it indicates too much sail resulting in potentially unnecessary strain on sails, rigging and steering plus it could place the crew at risk of injury. Don't judge so harshly, you weren't there.

@@bjrnetveter253 When you stand on the deck of a medium size monohull sailboat, your eyes are about 9' above the water. If the horizon is always visible, the waves are less than 9' tall. If the horizon disappears about half the time, the waves are 13-14' high. If the horizon disappears for almost the whole wave length, it is about twice 14' high, so 28' or so. I was half way between Hawaii in October, and the waves rolling from Japan, some 5,000 nm away (Force 7+,) were over 20' high. That distance that the wind blows over, is called fetch. If the wind blows for over 5 days for over 1000 nm, it will generate 20' + waves. More wind speed, higher waves. Force 9 winds can generate waves over 30' if the fetch and duration is big enough.

That vessel didn't need more sail, it needed more water! Either there was something wrong with the rig, which meant she could only sail on a starboard tack or the skipper made an emotional decision to sail to the perceived security of a safe harbour. There no good decisions in this situation except to drive the yacht straight onto the beach. By the time this video began, the vessel was stricken, indeed it was sailing toward a shallow as evidenced by the large breaking waves in its path. Of all these variables, the only certainty was that no sailing course exists which would have taught this skipper how to handle these conditions, only are huge amount of experience and an even laser dose of luck! If I was the voice on the skippers shoulder, I would have whispered "beach the boat and save your lives. Your vessel is no longer a sailing yacht, it's a coffin!!" Such an easy suggestion from the comfort of an armchair

@@alastairnewman1233 almost agree, but at least 20 knots of wind and there was no reason for that boat to be a beam of a sea and end up on the beach. The decision to get the boat in trouble happened long before the video started. Look for a bow wave...the boat is barely moving and at the mercy of the waves. We got caught once and I headed the boat out. We were within shot of harbour but there were shoals. Told the wife to go below with kids and close her up. 2 behind me decided to go for the safety of harbour...both were knocked down. 4 hours into it, it got worse and seeing waves build almost the height of a one story house....with double reef and one turn on the furler of the 12 ounce 100% jib. Held around 3.8 to 4.5 kts but we were headed out, not in. About 6 hours later made it into a bay with a more favorable approach around a head of land. We put in a hard afternoon and night but no one hurt and nothing broken.

@@verbatim1144 they needed power and they had shit. .end of story. Everyone knows he had to tack but not everyone realizes he didn't have enough way on or power in sails to do it...and he didn't. You want to play in that wind and sea better have a set and know to push that boat to get out of trouble. That boat got into trouble because of poor decision making and it was going to take some serious action to get out of it...or they could carry on wishing and employing half measures. A breaking wave, 25% of length of the boat, broadsiding a boat will knock it down...any boat, any hull design...a breaking wave is generally hitting the boat at 20 kts. So how do you counter that... use speed so that you are not exposed. That boat lopping along even keeled...may as well be dead in the water. To minimize ketting knocked down that tacking ( in those conditions), you better have some serious way on, minimize her profile, punch the tack, then sort her out...in those conditions it's not hard, unless you don't know the difference...and you are not going to be sailing even keeled.

sorry for the deaths. it looks like an example of "modern" fin keel mono mast sailboats aka SLOOPS that also have difficulty to sail close hauled with coastal waves and beat a lee shore (little sail lift, too much wave drag and tons of displacement) as old square sails. the lee shore beating strategy is about gaining speed in "beam reach" 90° and progresively reach 50° to the wind and maybe they were underpowered as some people have said here. however this can be probably a case of electric or engine failure and the camera man and people should have called a motorboat to tow the sailboat out of danger or a surfer could have helped them to jump the boat and reach the sand with fenders attached with ropes i suppose that in this scenario of no return the only option is beaching the boat between wave sets by running full sail and be prepared to jump off the boat with neoprene suit and diving fins. you wont find this in any diploma course or book

People should called for rescue? Engine failure? Are you a sailor? They sent a mayday, but it was too late. They thought they’re ok, probably. It was only one failure there, captain fault. Badly trimmed, not enough sail etc. But the worse decision we’re when they leave the marina with this forecast.
@crapisnice
@crapisnice 9 месяцев назад
@@Arthurskipper you cannot rely in over used "rescue" systems, any people in the area should have acted fast and launch few motorboats but this a social (lack of empaty, awareness and commumication exported by arctic people) problem and even that arctic sailor wouldnt even talk with next boat in the marina

@@ArthurskipperBefore entering the breaking waves, would you have set out more sail to gain windward? I know that it is very difficult to evaluate the captain, but it seems that they were trying to reach the port when they should have headed out to sea. Sorry for the translation.

@@crapisnice wait. You’re complaining about lack of empathy, and launch boats on that location? Listen, I agree with you about some people had lost their empathy, but about the rescue 🛟, we, people who worked with sea rescues or any other kind of rescue, we should see the scene and balance the risks. O. That situation, only helicopter 🚁, and it was getting launched when they capsize. I don’t know if they sent a mayday too late or if the rescue got late, o can tell you is 80% against 20% chances they got late (rescue team). “Very” Unfortunately, they lost their life’s. The point is, to loose lifes, they did at least a few very important mistakes, that’s wasn’t the case, because they did a lot of mistakes. Wasn’t the boat failure, even with no engine, that sailboat can sail away on that’s conditions. No one will send life’s to save that boat in another boat, maybe swimming, because is more safe, or maybe jet skis. But c’mom no countries can keep jet skis every 5 km of beach line. And no beach rescue 🛟 works on the beach ata that conditions. My opinion is that they didn’t had skills enough to manage their boat. They’re lucky to get here in Portugal coast, from Denmark 🇩🇰 . Is this trendy sailing thinghy, who makes anyone “able” to sail, and the money to buy a boat and invite friends to die. Hire a skipper or become a real captain. 🌬️⛵️🔱 Don’t blame others for their mistakes, please. If I do a mistake, I will put on the report to the authorities, for sure. That’s why we prepare the boat, put full tank always etc etc and USE THE LIFE VESTS on this sea conditions.

@@Arthurskipperrescue systems can be over burdened and anyone can call someone to launch a RIB boat wether rescue systems arrive on time or not. people usually dont react because the spectator syndrome besides trusting in the rescue systems, sometimes an "hero" or "fool" appears when the rest only watches i mean even a surfer can approach them as any baywatch won't, and i still think its an engine problem because these people wouldnt be playing with those big waves rightin frontof them to cut some time, and even lightweight regatta boats struggle with lee shores so probably the waves were pushing them to the coast and they were trying a beam reach to not run the boat to the beach. they probably died as result of body injuries inside the boat, or drowning easily because of it, they should have left the boat with wetsuits and fences laced with ropes, but there is not any protocol for these situations. im sorry for the deaths

@tylerbrown4483

The shame is that boat would have handled that same breaker an even a quarter mile offshore. You can see she doesn’t get capsized by the breaker, but she weathers the breaking wave and tries to right momentarily before her keel strikes the beach and the momentum of the wave drives her under. Boats belong at sea! Not on the beach…

I have just read an article on a danish boat site, were a close friend of the skipper tells some thoughts about the accident. For one, four people drowned. 2 men on board were very experienced with this boat in all weather. A Bavaria 38 feet. She tells that the skipper had the idea to not stay father from shore than swimming distance, in case of necessity. Not the best plan, when we see the video. With my limited knowledge I see that the skipper has brought the boat in a very bad situation and had no way out in the end, if not Neptune and the god of fortune had given some rope. Apparently they were unable to gain enough speed to cross the waves more outward. And they were too close to shore to turn the boat for a more favorable wind direction (perhaps). Way to close to shore to make experiments. So practically doomed and best to let the 3 of them make a swim to shore. Apparently they did not put on swimming vest. If true ??? But an obvious cause looks to be that they had no motor help. A situation like sailboats could get into in the times before the motor, with even less chance to navigate as going closer to the wind than a Bavaria can was unlikely. There was no weather forecast or often knowledge about where they were in fog or at night. No wonder a large % of ships then ended up in a ship wreck, as we see an unavoidable fate in this video, comming too close to shore to navigate. A foresail is very useful in heavy wind or storm. However in this case it looks like it's pushing the prove to hard towards shore ? And would it have been possible to balance the boat better with more maintain up ? Too easy to play clever from the chair. Sorry And RIP.

ALWAYS STAND OFF WELL TO SEAWARD......This is the First Rule of Coastal Navigation.....and even more so on a Lee Shore,or even when the wind is blowing parallel to the coast...The southernmost section of the South African Coast is known as The Graveyard of the Ships. The Old Portuguese Sailors named the southernmost Cape of Africa' Cape Agulhus'...Literally meaning 'Cape of Needles'. Why?? Well the coast is made up of rock layers that have been tilted through 90 degrees,forming sharp needle like projections....Now add to that the Mozambique current flowing over the shallow Agulhas Bank at about a 90 degree angle to the prevailing summer South Easter,forming a Lee shore...which leads to a confused sea,...and presto......you end up shipwrecked with a needle like rock projection right up your dead ass...if you are a lame ass seaman...

I ain't captain birdseye but even my limited knowledge/experience can see that boat is beam on to massive surf and that ain't no surf board. I was taught two things by a royal marine landing craft coxwain when I did my rib and power courses. 1, Stay away from land in rough seas, and 2, no matter what boat you've got be it power or sail........go nose to the beach and run aground. Live and get another boat. Even knowing this it would be difficult to survive this situation unless expert or lucky. Poor folks.
