This is NOT a how to video, although I do attempt to strip and totally rebuild a Volvo Penta D2-55 raw water pump, after it started to fail at the end of last years sailing season.
If you would actually like to watch a channel where someone genuinely knows what they're talking about on issues mechanical, then be sure to check out the super helpful sailing channel 'SV Impavidus', here: / @svimpavidus They make sure valuable videos that I truly hope they get a little subscriber boost for their efforts!
If you like to know where we purchased all of our engine parts from, we use a company called www.parts4engines.com and they are very speedy (in the UK at least) and seem very competitively priced.

4). One of the ways which we're paying for this lifestyle (as well as working during the winter) is up-cycling old running rigging into dog leads and collars which you can check out here: www.cadoha.com/etsy-shop
We hope you're all starting to emerge from this strange time we've just been through, and fingers crossed the summer is kinder to us all than the winter was.
All the best.

Nice work. It's great you show ALL the parts going in/out in the specific order, assuming no knowledge, as others do. Our pump had a seized and rusted bearing, lipseal and circlip requiring "destructive" removal. The Volvo diagram is not totally intuitive so this was the best video for dissambly and reassembly. Thank-you.

Hi Dom, Thanks for doing this video. I have a water leak from the seal at the back of my sea water pump on my boat in Greece. So in non marine applications of lock tight you want to only put 1 dot on the threads of the bolt/screw as it will spread it self as you are tightening up, more that a single dot can mean that you won't get it off. Normally it will say on the specific brand of lock tight instructions, just and FYI. looks like you did a smashing job. and valve clearances is done with a set of hardened steel feeler gauges, you can often find the expected tolerances in the workshop manual or online. I love that you approach this from a I can do it and that come with us on the journey, not a let me teach you perspective. That is how I am all the time also. so great job. :)
@philgray1023
@philgray1023 Год назад
I used this super strength Locktite for my traveler bolts. The kind that is listed as "cannot be undone". Feeling confident I told the commercial system plumber next door. He said " no such thing" just over-tighten first and it comes undone. I just wish he hadn't told me that. Now I worry about those bolts letting go.

I swopped the plate screws for stainless socket headed bolts. This means that I could use a short "T" handled allen key to undo them. In a rough sea, when I had an impellor go, it was easy to take the plate off& refit it. The allen key also holds the little bolts nice for locating in the holes so none drop in the bilge. I carry the key & a spare impellor in the engine bay because one year I lost 4 impellors then none for 3 years !!!

Nice work with the seawaterpump! Seems you have the traditional "gardenhose" as seawaterhose connecting pump to filter and bottomvalve intake. Would kindly recommend to replace these hoses with proper Marine hardwalled rubberhose. If the engine for some reason gets hot, the gardenhose could melt and sink the boat. Or the plastic hose looses shape letting no water through. Overheating the waterpump by accidental dryrunning could be enough... Unfortunately these gardenhoses are very commonly used on boats.

Well done, good job, how many run hours has your engine got ? I also have a D2-55a with 1500hrs, so far no water pump problems. But I do have some tips for you. Check or fit the new exhaust elbow asap, as the water inlets get blocked. Really they should be checked as part of routine maintenance. Just in case fit a Temperature alarm in the exhaust hose, there is cheap on on the market that works well. Our heat exchanger developed a hole just in front of the elbow in the dry area nearly gassing us. Some sort of splash-back from the elbow when it got partially blocked. The repair bill was over £4k. I fitted a semi auto flushing system so no seawater sits in the system and rots it. Volvo do one as an optional extra. Fit a strainer down stream of the water pump, we had temperature problems for ages due to bits of rubber blocking the heat exchanger inlet left by the previous owner, it went unnoticed by 2 surveyors but that's another story. If/when the impeller starts to fail it can be some time before you notice by which time you will have bits in your inlet.

Here is the other video Anthony (Impavidus) did about the "service" of the waterpump: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R40JtK6DJ-g.html

The sooner you replace dirty diesel engine with electric drive, the better!

Well yes there is that, but I’ll have to buy a few more lotto tickets this week I think 😬😬

Not really practical in the Uk without more sun. I regularly need 6 hours of run time at full power to get me home. From what I have seen on YT most conversations would struggle to deliver.
