We won't say it was easy, but we can't say it was too challenging either. Our first overnight (in this case, 2 nights) in the Gulf of Mexico (sailing from Galveston to Port Aransas) was a great experience. In this episode, you'll see:
00:03 Teacup Anchorage in Galveston
03:10 Gulf of Mexico at Night from Galveston to Freeport
05:55 Gulf of Mexico at Day from Freeport to just past Matagorda Bay
16:20 And a final approach to Port Aransas at sunrise.
We hope you enjoy this episode and enjoy coming along on our journey! Cheers, Matt.

Who Are We?
We're the Fosters, and we just sold our hourse and purchased a sailboat, Cadence, a Catalina 387. We're on a journey to minimize our life, learn to live on a sailboat, and sail away.
In 2019, Matt quit his public education career of 15 years, and went full-time building his own business. Olivia is ready to explore the world, and so am I...but first, we have to save up, learn about sailing, and figure out a way to leave land.
We're sharing this journey with you in hopes that it'll bring you a smile, provide something helpful, and maybe give a bit of inspiration to live life on your terms - to explore your world.
Join us as we take this journey into the unknown, and share some laughs along the way.

Love the graphics explaining the terms! Vloggers never do that but it’s helpful for people learning...and now you’re adding fishing! Totally hooked now 😉

Good video Matt. Overnighting (or anytime) under motor is always disappointing but a good learning experience to pick up some more night skills you will always use in the future. As it is often said, "As sailors we spend 80% of our time on the motor and only 20% sailing" so look at this as your payment toward the 80%. Family seems to becoming accustomed to longer passage making so that's good experience as well.

I love your perspective - it's all about putting in the time and gaining the skills. And yes, I'm (Matt) so proud of the family and how much their leaning into passages! Cheers, mate!

Awesome sailing 🍻 I'm curious as to why you chose to sail at night vs during the day? Keep the vids coming! 👌🏾

Plan A was a 15 hour trip, so we left 11pm to arrive in the afternoon of the next day. But since we opted for plan B to go straight to Port Aransas, we had the 2nd full night. The timing worked out, but it was very tiring!

Interesting to see where you're adventuring. I used to live in Portland, which is right by Port Aransas. I enjoy Florida much more than Texas, however! Hopefully you've made it to Florida by this time. I'm trying to get caught up on your videos - still about a year behind where you are now. Lol ~Melissa

Love the video. How can you tell how much speed you are getting from the sails and how much is coming from the engine?
@TheFosterJourney
@TheFosterJourney 3 года назад
If we're sailing 3.5 knots in light wind, and turn the engine on to a light 1800rpms and get 5.0 knots, then we know we're getting 1.5 knots in speed from the engine, kind of. Here's a little catch - If we're going upwind, our apparent wind increases due to the engine and this increase in apparent wind also increases sail performance. So from that point it's a bit of an estimate.

Greetings crew, nice job on your over nighter's. Too bad about that you didn't get any video of that second night. Oh well. The boat really looks comfortable with lots of room down below. How are you handling the dogs potty business? What are your next ports of call? Looks like I will stick around and watch what happens!

Thanks for the kind words Edward! At the time, fatigue and big seas had us not giving a single thought to cameras, but now, I'm kicking myself for not getting any footage. Oh well, lesson learned :) We have a few days in Port A, and then we'll hit up an anchorage or two. Can't wait to share! Cheers, Matt.

Was this trip between the land and shipping lane, or outside the shipping lane?
@TheFosterJourney
@TheFosterJourney 7 месяцев назад
Inside the shipping lane 5-10 miles offshore (30-60ft deep).

My charts have been 100% accurate on the oil rigs. Out of the hundred or so we've seen, only a handful had no lights (near Louisiana). The radar helps too at night.
@rlpatton1970

How far offshore were you on this trip ? A lot of rigs ?
@TheFosterJourney
@TheFosterJourney 2 года назад
We were 3-8 miles off. Not many rigs at all. At Matagorda, we were just outside of the large cargo ship anchorage, and that was probably the biggest thing to watch for.

I’m in Houston area and looking at purchasing a Sailboat soon. I’m looking for information around pro’s and con’s around starting a RU-vid channel and creating an LLC or S Corp. If you folks are doing the same, would you do a video or point me in a direction to get the information? I’m interested in seeing if going the RU-vid business route is worth it.
@TheFosterJourney
@TheFosterJourney 3 года назад
It could be, if it's something you love to do. What kind of sailboat are you interested in?
@joeymartinn1
@joeymartinn1 3 года назад
@@TheFosterJourney... I’m probably more interested in the tax breaks for the boat. So if there is a case for that, then I would love it. ha As far as the boat goes, I’m looking into a production boat like a Catalina or Bene like yours. Although, I am open when it comes to the boat. I want something between the 38 and 42 foot range that can be a live aboard.
@TheFosterJourney
@TheFosterJourney 3 года назад
@@joeymartinn1 there are a lot of good boats in that size range. We discovered they vary in terms of what/how you plan to use them: Full family or just guests? Bay sailing or distance? Time on anchor or mostly marina? Those are some questions that helped us...keep us updated on your shopping!
