Man...! What an odissey... The only thing I can tell you for comfort is, you are certainly still better off, then someone having to attend a boring office job for the rest of his life. Lighting protection: using steel stays as a Faraday cage. Run a substantial cable from the stays outside of the boat, attached to a metal plate in the water. The plate can be attached to the hull but it should be 30 cm square to dissipate the energy efficiently. It's not 100% but it should prevent a hole near the engine/prop-shaft, which is the root lighting takes in GRP etc., as it follows the shortest root via metal to ground, the prop!

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale a tale of a fateful trip, that started from this tropic port, aboard this tiny ship.

Peter, As I was watching your video on the repair of your boat, I’m surprised your weren’t using the, Marine Standard of Epoxy Repair called, “Splash Zone,” for emergency repairs. When I worked as a, “Commercial Diver,” it was the staple for all kind leak repairs. Both Pipes & Boat Repairs, WOOD, STEEL, FIBERGLASs, Or whatever you had. It mixes well in any type of water, so It can be applied wet or dry. It is an (A) & (B) type mix comes in, 1- Gallon Size Paint Cans, so it can be resealed and it can used accordingly to your needs. Although it is expensive to purchase the saying goes, “how much is your floating home $$$ worth to you.” You could have stuffed those holes with, “Splash Zone Epoxy,” and it would have been hard in 20-minutes and had no worry’s of dis-bonding under load. It would have been the type of Epoxy repair you could have called a, “Set It & Forget It,” type epoxy repair. The stuff is that good. Any way it is obvious your in a safe port now watching you narrate your video broadcast. I’m glad for you. I hope your wife is doing well the question a lot of us viewers have is where is she and what is her input on your boat crisis lighting strike? I worked with another, Commercial Diver, who survived a lighting strike while working on a pier repair on the water front of a marina here in, North America, he suffered a concussion and lost his hearing for a few day’s. he was also thrown about Twenty feet on his back. The strike did not hit him directly but went down in front of him. Needless to say we were glad he survived it. Just like you. Wow. I know Apio. Sells fish and lobster to the yachtees. Gave his grandson my speargun when I disembarked the Stahlratte in Cartagena. That was 2013. Can’t believe he’s still around. I think he almost took our lobster money and never brought the lobster but ended up showing up the next day with them if I remember correctly. He lives on Isla Frio Azucar if you ever need to find him.

Swimming pool epoxy would work perfectly for this. It is like clay or plado, but will cure underwater.

unbelievable bad luck with the lightning strike and hull puncture, but also super lucky it werent worse and u had the quick thinking ingenuity to plug the hole and then epoxy it. bet it felt exhausting especially with a day and a half without sleep! so glad u made it hard stand before all went under. top job

That strike reminded me of a tour I was on in Thailand - we come out of a cave and its absolutely SHITTING down with rain... and we have to kayak out, mid lightning storm, to the taxi vessel. I never paddled so fast in my life 😂😂😂

I ran my old wood boat for many many years and the cutlass bearing never made a sound . One day I ran over a mooring chain and bent the prop. I got the prop straightened and all was well. It had a old chrysler flat 6 which I ran almost every day,I was setting lobster traps. It would go faster than a sailboat however I never got a lightning strike.

I think all the ambient electricity from the nearby lightning has been a bit hair-raising on ya mate! All work and no sleep for days on end must have fried your nerves more than the electronics, too. Glad to know you are on the hard and beginning to recover, good on ya!

This exact same thing happened in the sixties. They were on a three hour tour and the weather started getting rough and suddenly the boat was lost on an island.

Wondering how this all plays out with another larger hurricane headed your way.

Please look for Levelator from the Conversations Network. It will help a lot with the audio levels in your videos. Sometimes I could hear you fine but, at other times I couldn't make out a word. I've never been struck by lightning but, I've seen the damage it can do to sailboats. You're actually one of the lucky ones.

Tie a big wire to the base of the mast and throw the other end into the water. Give the lightning a path to the water that isn't thru the hull.
