Welcome back to Sailing NV, where we’ve made landfall in Tanna Island, home to the active Volcano Mount Yasur! Today we take you with us as we get uncomfortably close to this explosive natural wonder
It was a 2 hour bumpy drive to the volcano along a dirt track, so we got to see quite a bit of the island on the way. We were heading up there for nightfall, so that the show from the volcano would be more dramatic
Vanuatu has a special tradition involving Banyan trees, known as land diving, where men jump from a wooden tower with the vines from this tree tied around their ankles. We can’t wait to share a very special episode about this coming up soon!
Reeling from this powerful encounter with nature, it was time to hoist our sails and move on. It was a pretty gloomy grey day but we had plenty of wind.
We were headed north to the island of Efate and the capital of Vanuatu Port Vila, 150nm away. We’d left in the early morning as we’d imagined the trip to take around 24hours… however we were making such good speeds, our ETA turned out to be vastly different.
In the end this 150 passage took us 15hours, reached a new top speed of over 16knots surfing down waves and were greeted by the sparkling lights of this city after sunset.
Stay tuned for the next video as after this fast sail we woke up to some unwanted noises coming from our rudder, plus we import our dog Solo, show you around the Capital and do full inspection and service to our Liferaft, ready for the real offshore 3000nm passage coming up!

Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts. We're refitting an ex Vendée Globe Open 60 race boat originally designed & built & raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He competed in her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), finishing 5th, becoming the first non-frenchman to finish.
We've recently finished a big refit in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we need to make both dog and baby proof! We launched in Sept 2022 and finally set sail from Fiji in April. With limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water!
Subscribe to our channel&track our progress as we release videos about our journey as well as "how to" videos about anything boat related.
Never stop to dream, never stop to sail!
You can find out more about the boat, us and our refit plans on our website www.sailingnv.com or follow us on

Not sure I'd be game to go up that volcano after what happened on Whakaari in 2019. 😬

Not sure I agree with putting your kids at risk. Maybe a sitter would have been appropriate for this adventure. I am sure you kept them at a safe distance, but you never know.

Well that is very real and definitely a very raw look at the power of mother nature. Beautiful that you can still experience that somewhere just like it was hundreds of years ago. Hopefully it stays that way for a long time, unspoiled and raw.

Jo, your skills on the helm appear professional. You don't over steer and seem quite content driving the boat at high speed. Where did you get your experience?

Hey James thanks for the nice comment! I’ve just been sailing for a long time so it’s just practice I guess and being around more experienced people who’ve taught me things

Wow, now that was a bit scary I guess. Especially the sound of liquid rock shooting in the Sky. But hey, the Mac Gyver of the seas family took good care of safety...😁 Nice boat speed by the way. Quick question: Do you have standing hight in the boat?
@SailingNV
@SailingNV 11 месяцев назад
Hey Tyman, yep we've got standing height in around half the boat

That volcano is terrifying! But loving the big smiles from the two of you as NV hits 12 knots.
