Sailmaking isn’t exactly voodoo magic, but because it’s pretty tough to find much information on sailmaking & sail cloth, we wanted to share everything we’ve learned in our quest to make the right decisions about our new headsail.
This is a very technical video, so be sure to watch it after a good night’s sleep and a cup of coffee. Get ready to learn some stuff!
Our new sail is coming from Precision Sails. Interested in a new sail? Give them a shout and tell 'em we sent you. The level of customer service this loft offers is unrivaled. You can get a quote for a new sail here: www.precisions...
Hope you enjoy!

This video proves exactly how much I love you guys. I sat and watched the whole thing. No adventure, no travel, heck no bikinis! I think that with your help I understood most of what you were saying. Thanks. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'm all in.

I bought a new main sail from you 3 years ago for my S2 8.5. After 3 years with this sail I have 3 things to say. I love it, I love it I love it. I got your off shore package and I am glad I did. Your sail is so strong and reinforced I am confident with it in all conditions!! I happened to be sailing across Lake Michigan from Milwaukee to Ludington during the Chicago Mac race 2017. I faced 25 to 30 kt winds. I put in the second reef and motor sailed through the night. The sail held up perfectly! I used it to stabilize my boat. I love the way the reef points are reinforced! When I got to Ludington in the morning I say boats coming in with ripped sails, broken masts and a radio call to have a seasick crewmember taken to the hospital. I felt safe in these conditions with your sail!! I plan to replace my head sail in the next year or 2 I will definitely buy another sail from you and I recommend your sails to all that ask!! I am finally starting to make videos for my channel. I filmed a video of me putting your sail on my boat. I showed the batten pockets and talked about how much I liked the sail. I plan to publish the video in the next 3 weeks. The only "issue" I had with the sail is that the sail is so BEEFY it didn't fit under my stock sail cover. I needed a new sail cover anyway, so I had a bigger sail cover made. Thank you for what you do!!

You guys are not only passionate about the joy of sailing but are practical and logical about the technology. Keep it up.

I have to say, that was the best explanation of how a sail works and why, I have had the pleasure of watching. Keep up the great work you guys. Have fun, be safe and KEEP ON SAILIN ON! cheers RJ

Love it. When teaching aerodynamics of wings/sails I have always used a sheet of 8x11 paper. Hold the paper on the corners of on of the 8 inche sides in each hand. Holding the paper up to your mouth with the edge vertical and the tag end of the paper forming a loose arc and free to move, Blow across the top of the arc in the paper and observe that the paper will rise with no effort being applied to the bottom surface of the paper. For the uninitiated in aerodynamics it is striking visual demonstration of how a sail works on a reach.

Even I was able to finally understand why you chose this sail. I am 72 and have only sailed a few times in my life, I wish I had known this years ago. It really helped when you compared it to a plane wing. Yup I’m not to old to learn with all your help.Thank you so much!

Precision sails has done a great job providing a customer service not usually found with a sailmaker. They then add in great pricing, quality and delivery and you have a winner! They could probably sell you a bridge too. But joking aside I am impressed and have directed a couple of people to them and they have been happy . Doesn’t sound like an american company but it is! Let’s hope You know who does not put a 25% tariff on it!!!! Cheers Warren

@@SailingSoulianis "made remotely" where? Vancouver isn't a very cost-effective place to be sewing big sheets together. Kentucky is better for that, as is Alabama where you are now. Also, this sounds to me like a racing sail, for cruising, look to the used market, or just keep the next sail you are given.

To the guys who asked about furling sails - it's because once the sail has more than about four or five rolls in it the shape goes to rats (even with foam inserts) drive is a product of luff length (which is why race boat tend to have 100-105% headsails most bang for handicap penalty buck.

For a 42-Foot Herreshoff I sailed on, there was a full-size genoa for when the boat was sailing inside the Chesapeake Bay. For ocean sailing there was a "mini" genoa. The boat handled the same way. If you tried the "mini" genoa inside the Chesapeake Bay the boat would have been under-powered. Red line "boring!" If you used the full-size genoa on the open ocean her heeling moment was OMG. That's not to say chances were not taken.
