A crazy idea I got from this thread on RCGroups, www.rcgroups.c...
It turned out not to be so crazy after all. Unsure how practical it is given the issue with obtaining or making diesel fuel, but hell it ran! Davis Diesel, Maaster Airscrew 14x6, OS F plug.

There was a channel a few years back, An older gentlemen that use to make almost any engine with different types of modified vegetable oil and the type of additive use to spike up regular Diesel fuel.. it was an awesome channel...

As a kid I found I could start a Cox .049 without a glow battery by priming it with diesel, no electric starters then either. In this example I wonder if the pre-ignition is related to the glow plug, might be worth trying a plug with the element removed or blanked off?

David that’s crazy and insane please if can answer this!! A) did it have any internal damage after you ran it B) is the glow plug any good. And if you get another chance run a crap four stroke with the same compression rate and peak it out!!!! Awesome video keep it up👍

I did not open up the engine to inspect for damage, but I HIGHLY there would be any after just a singe run. Now 10-15 runs then there might be some damage to the connecting rod or other parts over time as the engine was not designed to run like this. It ran just fine on glow fuel afterwards and the plug was not damaged at all. I do have a fellow sending me a junker Saito 80 and some shims to install under the head to adjust the compression ration. SO a few more runs on that engine might be happening.

Interesting, but likely frightfully hard on the engine. I note that Enya made some changes to their production .41 and .36 4-stroke diesels vs the glow versions of same- long term use and durability over that being the main issues.

A friend of mine did a diesel conversion on a. 46 2 stroke. The connecting rod failed after about 10 hours of flight. I think he was running a 12x6 or 12x8 propeller, that would be a lot of load.

Oh, I am not running this engine on diesel fuel any more. Simply an experiment only.

I had a Mk 1 Drone diesel that someone else ran on model diesel fuel- the compression was gone and the main bearing was pounded out so bad you could rock the prop back and forth a good 1/8" at the tips.

i wonder if you put a 2 stroke long plug in instead of the F plug if it will raise the compression up enough to stop the knocking since its taking up more space inside?

Well an F plug is the longest plug made so doubtful. This engine is just not designed to run on this fuel.

No black smoke it's surprising runing on diesel. it burns it pretty clean your was hand was dirty as hell lol the engine knock was not to good 🙃

They run better than the OS engines, the compression is higher on the Saitos. My saito .40 runs the same.

That should not have run. These have at best 10:1 compression, I don't think that is enough to properly ignite diesel fuel. BUT, somehow it started. Also, diesel fuel alone will not lubricate the cylinder walls, this engine needs castor oil for that. Glow fuel is methanol, nitromethane [typically 10%], and castor oil. He probably destroyed the compression on that short run. Cool video, even if you did probably destroy an engine-

Not very long. Ask your mechanic next time you are in his shop if it is okay to drive your vehicle with the engine knocking, see what he says.

Sometimes if a rod fails, it can be thrown out the side of the engine block. I've heard rod knocking in a car engine before. It gets louder as it gets worse.

Eventually, that will happen. Once long ago a friend of mine was flying an old Guillow's Rat Racer with a Fox .35X on it. About half way through the flight, there was a loud bang and then silence. Examination of the engine after landing showed the con rod big end had failed and the rod punched a hole the size of a quarter thru the bottom of the crank case. His dad was a master with engines and we hunted up the missing piece out on the flight circle. He heli-arced it back in place, replaced the rod, and a couple weekends later the engine was back in action.

Because it is model diesel fuel.

I have not done that just yet. I do not expect anything unusual. I am doing just to clean the engine out. The glow plug survived.

Now you've done it ! Why not try, 2 stroke gasoline ? It's not as Messey or smelly as diesel ! Keep up the good work !

I actually prefer the smell of diesel fuel/exhaust to gasoline any day.

Probably because it won't work. Diesel has ether in it which is what causes the ignition, gasoline doesn't.

Gasoline needs a high compression to ignite. We used it to start diesels in the military because it is available, cheap, and not as destructive to the engine as ether.

There is no need to be concerned about peaking it, a Diesel simply quits when tuned lean.

I have an entire video series on the OS 40 FP with a diesel head on it. I do not think a standard 2 stroke engine would operate on diesel fuel.

Well that is the reason that diesel heads were made for 2 stroke engines. They do not lend themselves to operation on that fuel without adjustable compression.

Exactly. It is like running a gasoline engine with the spark either advanced or retarded too much- not good for either engine or your wallet.

Very great video and information, yes your saito is nocking very bad. But it is so funy to see that a 4Stroke runns with Dieselfuel. Congratulation... perhaps you can modify the compression ratio to stop the nocking at full throttle.

It starts easily and works as a test, but knocks very hard, poor piston-conrod. Maybe less ether, and higher content of cetane booster to control for a smoother combustion. Thats the theory. Great test David!

There is a very good reason you don't run any fixed compression engine on model diesel fuel- there is no way to vary the compression ratio and so adjust the ignition timing. The old Drone and Micron fixed compression engines were meant to be run on a straight ether/mineral oil fuel, that is it. Running them on model diesel today will destroy one in short order. The same is true of these 4 strokes with fixed compression.

John Kelinske and if you add the fact that probably the glow plug started to glow after the element heats up, that contributes to advance timing even further, probably testing with a bad plug after extracting the rest of the platinum alloy coil could cure partially the knocking.

It won't cure the simple fact the engine wasn't designed nor intended to be run that way. The element doesn't glow from heating up, it glows from the catalytic reaction to the alcohol in the fuel when running on glow fuel, the initial heating of the element by the battery to start is only until the reaction starts to take place when the engine begins running.

It's not knocking, it's dieseling. If it starts knocking, it will throw the prop. @@oscarzt1652
