📜 History of Saladin & the 3rd Crusade: A Crusade's End - Things look bleak for Saladin. Richard I had returned and the Lionheart can be seen right outside Jerusalem. Internally, his coalition is starting to fracture. There are divisions amongst his advisors and amongst his soldiers. He's certain that this is the end. In an age of kingdoms, empire, and amassing wealth as status, Saladin denied his personal glory and wealth in favor of glorifying God and enriching his people. He was magnanimous and humble, disciplined and courageous, even in the face of ruin and decay.

@@Cecilia-ky3uw Being "manipulative and understanding men" does not leave you with 1 gold coin. Him being generous was one of the reasons why he had a difficult time in the crusades, as said in history he just got through with great luck...if he had more ruthlessness in his rule he would have gotten through it much easier and had the other leading Muslim figures in line. Not saying that he used his magnanimous attitude almost the entire time just for charity, it's just the guy literally memorized the entire Hamasah...he is obviously a big believer in chivalry

The Quran says "You will find the closest friends to the believers are those that say we are Christians, because they are not arrogant." You'd love the story of Umar II, rarely known in the west. He's the exception to the saying power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Born a spoiled royal the more status he was given the more pious he became. He ruled the largest empire in history at the time and so just he became there was no one poor enough to receive charity.

It doesn’t make sense to me why Christians and Muslims would even be enemies. I’m not a religious person but the two share the same fundamental, foundational doctrines. They have very similar codes of conduct and morality. Islam and Christianity are beautiful philosophies and religions, and both have sadly been corroded in part due to the wills of power-hungry political and religious leaders, and the dogmatic tendencies of those with uncritical worldviews.

His end actually feels super sad to me. The man spent all his life keeping the Muslims together, achieving great things and became a symbol for the Muslim world. Yet he became increasingly powerless and isolated in his ideology for a united Islamic state, watching in frustration as his empire crumbling apart with infighting, and ended up dying lonely and exhausted from all the deeds he had achieved.

Aurangzeb the Mughal ruler of the richest empire in the world too left only 300 rupees when he died. Those too were given to charity on his will. He didn't use the royal treasury for his personal expenditure, he instead made and sold cap and copies of Quran for his personal income.

Do you mind explaining what you mean by neutral. I learned about him from video games and my history classes briefly speak about him and in both of those occasions they often praised his chivalry, intelligence and honor while mentioning that if his allies actually supported him then the third crusade would have been a complete failure. I can only imagine that the Islamic world sings praises about him in their history books and hails him as a hero but even then they are not that far from the truth.

@@frking100 I had seen bbc drama which portrays him as a miserable and impatience old man. On the other hand, my religion teacher telling an exaggerate story which portrays him as a very powerful warrior in combat with his scimitar. Ever since I watch extra history I always wait for his portrayal and "fair" narrative (sorry it shouldn't been neutral).

I think that the modern crisis in the Middle East is because of nationalism not just ethnicity (if you look into Arab history. Subjects of the reigning caliphate identified as Muslims before any other identification. Egypt for example was ruled by every single Muslim ethnicity ranging from turks to maghrebies. I don't know about any instances in which someone who was not a first generation foreigner to Egypt was regarded as a foreigner except when he had public opinion heavily against him)

It is the western stigma that seperates kurds from turks which there isn't a divide as seen in Selahaddin Eyyubi. Muslims don't seperate people by their race, we see their character in act.

That’s largely fair, though Richard was nearly his equal in strategy, but he didn’t have a undies army, he had dusunified crusaders.if his men agreed to attack Egypt they probably win the crusade outright as Saladin was in poor financial shape

The legendary General Salahdin who is still considered today as " THE SWORD OF ISLAM" in the muslim world. But during his time he was much more than that. A true muslim hero and at the end, His enemies started to love him and regarded him as The Great. He conquered the heart of the people, Became examplars of honour, Symbol of chivalry and a Celebrated iconic commander in the muslim world.

Well, in a world as today were major powers has mostly be in peace for decades, we tend to value more military might as way to achieve peace. Instead we should realize that individuals who only lived by the sword (such as Alexander) will come to leave nothing but chaos, while individuals like Saladin achieve much more with less violence

No you're wrong, the only person who was considered as Sword of Islam was Khalid ibn Walid, Yusuf(Saladin) was called Salah-ad-Din/Saladin meaning the Righteous of Religion.

An ancestor of mine, Sir Richard Reynell was appointed sheriff of Devonshire by Richard the First when Richard left on the crusades. It's so interesting learning more about time period and the context of all this taking place. Maybe extra history will show us sometime more of what was happening in Europe while the kings were away?

Richard and Saladin the two great characters of the 3rd crusade. Despite having a high opinion of each other, never met face to face. Saladin at first did not allow Richard to meet him, probably due to anger at the massacre at Acre. And after his defeat Richard was heartbroken and refused to go to pilgrimage in Jerusalem as a loser and also to meet Saladin.

He believes and knows that there is no perfect earth, so I imagine he was grateful for achieving the thing he did manage to achieve namely holding the already fractured states unified and established for a good while under his influence and after. For a muslim like him, it's not so much the victory and the material glory of winning that matters, that's just the icing of the cake, rather the point of it was to face those challenges and do your best facing them and then dying knowing you've spent all you could towards what you genuinely believe is a good cause. That's why you see that he also had no wealth on him as he was dying, the point of it was to spend it all while he could because in his heart there's a destination he's going to where it is his intentions and actions that will have any merit rather than his material achievements.

@@Secret_Moon Actullay no. His ultimate goal was to secure Al Quds (Jerusalem) for Muslims and he achieved that goal. And he did not die "lonely and exhausted", he died knowing that he had done for his people what no one else could have done in centuries. Saladin truly was a great and honorable man. There's a story that's told about him that when a Frankish Christian woman had her baby stolen and sold on the market, her countrymen told her to appeal to Saladin for aid. Without a second thought he bought the baby back using his own money.

One thing tikle my head : in french history books, Philippe Auguste (during the start of the third crusade) got the title "King of the Francs", which is translated in French by "Rois des Francs"; and after conquering Normandy, he modifie his title to "King of the Francs" into "King of France". But on the second episode, the presentator said that Philippe Auguste was King of France in all of the third crusade. Anyway, it is a great serie. You guys are awesome ;-)
