We had been through Winston Salem, North Carolina many times. We always associated it with Reynolds Tobacco Company and cigarettes. However, it wasn't until recently that I happened upon the history of the city, and it intrigued me. Who would've ever thought that this city began because a road was built following a trail created by the Native Americans in the early 1700s and maybe before.
I thought Wachovia was just the name of a bank. However, it was actually the name of a 99,000 acre tract of land bought by 15 men representing the Unity of the Brethren, often referred to as the Moravian Church. These Moravians settled an area in what is now called Old Salem.
RVing takes you on some amazing adventures. I love history, and RVing allows me to explore some of the historical areas firsthand. On this 1500 mile journey, I also found out that the Moravians founded the largest granite quarry in the world, located in Mount Airy, NC. Andy Griffith learned music in a Moravian church there. I had always thought the the Protestant Movement started with Martin Luther in 1517, when it actually began in 1457 by the Moravians.
Anyway, I apologize for the shortness of this video. I get so involved in researching that I forget to take a lot of photos and videos. I'll work on that.
