One key part of all our adventurez is getting the right gear. Some have said that there is no bad weather just bad gear. I can sort of get behind that.
These Salewa boots are awesome! I was introduced to them at the OR Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City a few years ago and just had to have a pair.
I got these at Campsaver.com and they hooked it up! I have owned these for a little more than a year now and have been super happy. I was looking for a boot that would work for almost year-round use. I have an expensive hobby on a tight budget and have to get creative! This Mid GTX boot is great for light winter use with a thicker wool sock as well as Fall, Spring and Summer use with a lighter sock. Salewa was genius and provided two different in-soles to allow for different spacing within the boot, this allows me to have a great fit with whatever weight of sock I am wearing.
It took about 10-15 miles to get these babies broken in and since then I have loved them, here is why:
First- The materials used are incredibly high quality. The leather is genuine and brushed to maintain a consistent look as I abuse them. The rubber outsole is soft enough to allow for decent traction on most rock surfaces but hard enough to accommodate a light crampon. The boot has external ankle hardware that supports as well as locks the heel in to help avoid excessive heal slip which causes blisters.
Second - The fit is great. I have a slender narrow foot and the boot has been intentionally crafted to accommodate that. The toe box could be a little wider but I am not complaining. The pressure at the top of the foot is perfect, this is often a reason for discomfort with a lot of other boots I have worn.
Third - I was wanting a boot that would allow me to traverse and approach on semi-technical terrain and this boot does that. It has a climbing toe that and toe edge that allows me to rock climb in them. I actually like these more than my climbing shoes on some stuff because they are so rigid and support my heal so well. It takes some of the load off of the calves. Killer boots man!
Fourth - These perform quite well in wet/snowy conditions. The area below the upper ankle is sealed and doesn't allow any water in. Once the water level is about 7-8 inches water can seep but when I have them synched down it doesn't. This is especially true when hiking at a normal pace through water it doesn't allow for enough time to seep in.
In short - These boots are great for Novice/Semi-Pro use and at least 3 seasons, call it 3.5. :)
