AMMENDMENT: Salicylic acid is generally considered safe in pregnancy when applied topically in small amounts.. I would still advise people speak to professionals if they have any doubts at all or for additional advice. Sending you so much love x
I wanted to share as someone with mature skin. Using an acid blend containing salicylic acid is the ONLY way I can keep my skin texture free. Without it, my "sluggish" skin that is slow to turn over dead skin cells, just lets them build up. I sometimes use TO Peeling Solution mask, but mostly the Good Molecules Overnight Exfoliating Treatment (nightly.) I won't ever be without it!❤️❤️
I use CeraVe 2% Wash on both my face & body. Daily, I wash my face with this to slightly lower the pH of my face before using my Timeless 20% VitC serum (suppose to help absorption of the VitC). On my body, I use it the day before & after shaving which has eliminated ingrown hairs for me. I used to use Paula's Choice after my VitC serum because 10 lactic acid was to harsh. But I've been using the Ordinary 5% Lactic Acid & love it. ❤
RE Pregnancy: my dermatologist recommended to only use below 2% while pregnant and not a high percentage. I had terrible acne while pregnant and SA really helped
Recently I'm really liking the new Cerave Acne Control Cleanser with 2% Salicylic Acid. It is stronger than The Inkey List and other Cerave SA cleansers, but it hasn't been drying or stripping for me. I like how it foams and lathers up a bit more, and it has some oil-controlling clay and other ingredients in it. It might be too strong for people with dry or sensitive skin, but I like it for my oily/acne-prone skin that can take a stronger cleanser.
🙏 Thank you Rob for pointing out that Paula’s Choice may not be cruelty free anymore 😿😿 But that’s one of the many things that makes your channel better (IMO) than some others. And I always learn something new. Take care! Lots of love from Sweden 🇸🇪 ✌️😽💗
I am a devoted fan of salicylic acid. My skin used to be oilier, but now in middle age has settled into normal, though still with pores that tend to become congested. BHA is a dream for clearing pores and removing dull, dead surface skin. I have ridiculously sensitive skin, rosacea, eczema, dermatitis, etc., and cannot get anywhere near an AHA. BHA actually soothes my annoyed skin due to its antiinflammatory properties. I use Paula's Choice Resist 2% liquid, use it only at night, and typically stick to once every few days. I find that to be plenty to accomplish the task, though it's not irritating, so I could use it daily, as I've built up to it over time. I mist my face with rosewater, apply my Hylamide Subq eye serum, then the BHA all over my face. In cold weather, I might add a lightweight moisturizer, but typically don't. After morning cleansing, my skin looks refreshed, and then I slather on SPF and head out. An absolute dream.
@@valeriemarie1985 Love that. I typically use PC Resist 2% all over my face, then the 9% as a spot treatment as needed. Zero irritation, even on my bananas skin.
I also use that Ordinary Salicylic Acid Masque as a spot treatment on top of a breakout overnight. But absolutely agree, have learned to use a sailcylic based serum only on my congested areas vs whole face. Did not know you can also use alongside with lactic acid tho! So thanks for that tip!
Just want to give an honourable mention to Superdrug's new 2% BHA toner as well. It's super budget friendly at £8.99 for 200ml and contains no skincare nasties with a short ingredient list and soothing ingredients like panthenol and allantoin. It's gentle but effective and it's my new holy grail BHA product!
I read that vitamin C is hard to penetrator through oil... So I found it best to cleanse with salysiluc acid... Then later add vitamin C serum and it works really well
if anyone is considering Cerave sa renewing cleanser, don't. I've used it for a week and it broke me out, both cystic acnes and fungal acne. i'm going to try their acne foaming cream cleanser and see how it goes though.
Since trying to find a solution to controlling my acne prone, pustular inflammatory rosacea blemishes now I'm antibiotic free. My sensitive skin, now I've repaired my compromised skin barrier, is loving SA. I'm controlling it well with a combination of Superdrugs amazing brand Me+ salicylic acid cleanser with ceramides- amazing! Great for sensitive skin. TIL PHA toner and TIL succinic acid blemish treatment. These are all now my holy grails. My cheeks, chin, t zone is the main offending area so I do slather/ smear TIL blemish treatment over this area thinly particularly when the blemishes are in full force. Literally I couldn't live without them. Non stripping, effective and reduce impact of PIH and PIE that I usually get.
I use Derma E salicylic acid on my shoulders and upper back I have zits there all the time it works great and is vegan and cruelty free love many of their products. I use it morning and night. Been lucky never really had pimples on face but back and shoulders is another story!
Love salicylic acid! The Paula's Choice is a must to have on hand for days when I've had to wear a mask for long hours and my skin feels congested and gross. Best thing to do a cleanse and then apply the toner. The Geek and Gorgeous one sounds awesome! Thanks for another super informative video, Rob 😊💜
My skin is sensitive, but tolerates mandelic and salicylic. Not glycolic.. Well my armpits can take a lower strength glycolic, but not the rest of my body. My go-to exfoliator for the face is G&G Cheer Up.
SA cerave cleanser is doing very well for me, so now im in getting upset because i just bought a new bottle and feel like i wasted money. but who cares, its working for me?
I use salicylic acid on my body in place of soap and it has been transformational for me. I used to have really bad back acne (much worse than my face ever has been) and using salicylic acid has banished the breakouts! I only have the occasional pimple now as opposed to having at least a few constantly. Just wanted to share my own salicylic acid experience 😊
@@LaurenLPage the cerave one has worked well for me. Also what caused you to ditch the pill? I’m thinking about going on it because I have bad periods but I’m nervous about side effects. And I’m getting married next year so I gotta decide some form of birth control soon for that as well
@@LaurenLPage Ah I see. I’m 22 now, been celibate my whole life for religious reasons so I never saw the point in taking it, but now I’ll need it for next year and think I want to start it early just because my periods suckkkkkkk
@@LaurenLPage tbh I’m extremely concerned about how well I’ll be able to remember to take a pill every day because I have ADHD. So maybe I’ll get an implant instead. More research to do haha
An affordable alternative to the Sunday Riley spot treatment is The Inkey List Succinic Acid spot treatment! It also has sulfur and salicylic acid without being drying.
I use salicylic acid once a week, beacuse my skin can be a bit sensitive sometimes. Paula’s Choice is the best in my opinion. Definitely not drying to my dry skin.
Would you do a video (including favorites) on the pros and cons multi-acid products (e.g., salicylic, lactic, glycolic) are why cosmetic formulators do them?
Interesting. I spot treat with mandelic + salicylic + azelaic acid . POTENT combo that has really knocked out my cystic pimples! But I definitely don’t recommend it for really sensitive skin but this however is magical and works for me 💛
The Paula’s Choice BHA 2% salicylic acid has cured the 20 year battle I’ve had with acne on my chin! I use it morning & night and I put it straight on my chin and nose as a serum (don’t want to waste any on a cotton pad) Its works better than any topical acne prescription my Dr has ever given me. I rarely now ever have a spot and if I do it goes quickly without scaring (I top it up with the Ink List Succinic acid - thanks to your recommendation Rob) Its also minimising the blackheads on my nose and clearing the congestion on my chin. Its brilliant. The PC is pricy so I might try the FT or the G&G but I’ll keep some PC on standby in case it doesn’t work so well. I never want my chin acne to return.
I've got dry skin so I just occasionally use the paula's choice BHA exfoliant and the Azelaic acid booster which both have salicylic acid for the odd breakout, but I don't really get breakouts unless I use certain makeup. I find the PC BHA to be good for even my dry skin
I don't generally reach for SA. Nothing against it, it doesn't hurt me, but I'm not blackhead or breakout prone, so I don't feel I need it. I do have KP but salicylic doesn't touch it (even 12%glycolic is struggling to scratch the surface, my skin is hard-core!) I do use the Inkey List succinic for the odd hormonal mega-pimple, and i believe the 0.5% SA is quite effective there (in tandem with the sulphur etc).
I’ve been using the Inky List’s SA cleanser for KP on my arms and it’s really made a difference - plus, you get some good bang for your buck. Also, being in the US, I love when you say “cut the waffle.” 🔪🧇🤣
My new favorite is Bagliora 2% BHA. I use it all over the place, really, because no part of my face and neck never gets acne breakouts, and I don't find it to be drying. Also use salicylic acid on my scalp and body, but then I go for a cheaper product. The Paula's choice one was a huge let down. Never repurchased.
Currently using the Cosrx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid on my nose and chin. Will definately try the G&G once I'm done with the Cosrx one. Loved the video and the today's live! Xx
recently discovered your channel and im hooked . love how clear cut your info is without too much waffle .I have been using salicyclic acid for so long simply to fight acne but never understood it properly.
Kinda off topic, but why is the G&G exfoliate does not have a lactic acid + BHA combo without Glygolic acid ? I know that would be your preference right ?
PS 2% BHA has almost eliminated my hormonal acne! I am still figuring out the balance between using BHA and retinol, but I actually think I need BHA every day to keep this in check. So I use it in my worst acne areas in the mornings on the days I will use retinol in the evening. Hopefully that will do the trick! My skin is pretty tolerant now luckily, and I think I might even handle combining lactic acid and bha! Thank you for sharing that :D
For my dry, sensitive adult skin with comedonal acne I've learned SA in cream/lotion form (f.ex Paula's choice body version or Cerave) twice a week will do the trick acne-wise without drying or sensitivity. No other treatments on those two nights to minimize the risk of sensitivity. I'm currently experimenting on whether I need any AHA at all in my routine as SA does offer surface exfoliation as well. So far it's starting to look like I don't -meaning I've been over exfoliating. I feel the current thinking of using multiple different exfoliators and/or exfoliating daily might be way too much for a lot of people.
Yay you finally spoke about one of my favorites! I used to hate and avoid it during my teen years because all of the products were terribly formulated. I would love a salicylic 2% lactic 10% serum- hint hint your skincare brand haha. Sending you love, thanks for another great video!
Rob, I'm surprised you didn't mention The INKEY List Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) Blemish + Blackhead Serum. It is also a great budget-friendly salicylic acid serum.
Can I use the inkey list salicylic acid cleanser on alternate nights with retinol or if I’m using retinol salicylic acid is too much? I also have the CosRx power liquid and don’t know how to fit it in now in my skincare routine now that I started retinol every 2 nights..
Another great video! I’ve been applying a light hydrating toner before I put my exfoliating acids on since I have normal to dry and sensitive skin. Does that effect the exfoliating power? Would toner be better after exfoliating? Thanks again!
Hi Rob even as someone with super dry, rosacea and eczema prone skin I benefit from using salicylic acid, but used in a very specific/targeted way. i use a lot of very rich creams, oils and balms to care for the severe dryness, but this can cause some occasional clogged pores in the nose/chin area. I rarely get "spots/pimples" due to being so dry and prior to all the mask wearing hardly ever had a "pimple". If I do get a pimple I use salicylic acid to treat it, only applied to the pimple itself over a few days. Even when I don't have a pimple I use it in the t zone once or twice a week (to prevent any clogging of the pores as stated). On my skin 2% is a bit much and I prefer the 1% paula's choice calm BHA. The 30ml travel size has lasted me months used in this way, making it affordable to use. The gel consistency means it's easy to place just where needed, a serum or toner is less easy to control I find. As I'm only using one pump once or twice a week, it's lasting at least six months for around £10 for the 30mls - making it really affordable for me. The formulation contains many soothing/hydrating ingredients to minimise any dryness and it's working for my skin. I use a 5% mandelic acid toner around the perimeter of the face and this BHA in the t zone, as my exfoliation routine. I use retinoids, azelaic acid and urea in my normal daily routine which do provide cell turnover and exfoliation benefits. This means the BHA is only needed once a week normally. Obviously this won't suit an oily/acne prone skin, but for my skin this is what is working. Best wishes.
Another great video, I'm really excited to try the geek and gorgeous serum! Hahaha sneak peak of the typology review. Btw I found that for the days my combo skin is extra congested leaving on my facetheory c2 pro cleanser (second cleanser) on longer, so while I brush my teeth or so, it works wonders! Could be a hack. Lots of love from the Netherlands
Hey you :) i would like to ask you to make a video about Revolution skincare with salicylic acid (they have a few product with this acid) and maybe some tips how to use it, can we use everything together or just one at the time etc. Thank you
Thank you for this video, super informative! I personally really loved the Typology one though, didn't find it oily or drying at all 🤷🏽♀️ I guess just shows how individual skincare is.
The ingredients in the Versed serums look great but the percentages were much lower than I thought by looking at the Inci list. Although going for the highest isn’t the best either...just mentioning as I was surprised.
Hey Rob love the channel and videos. I just wondered what is a good alternative to paulas choice 2% bha, I use it like a toner? I'm looking for an alternative seeing as now it's no longer cruelty free. Thanks keep up the good work xxx
