I haven't fished up that way much honestly and when I have fished up there I have not done well. I have tried that area a couple of times for steelhead but never for salmon. I usually fish the DSR for salmon or the Upper Fly Zone for Steelies. I had spent some time looking at maps and looking for spots away from the main access areas around the mid-river area but then you have the drift boats that can go anywhere and after you put in all of that effort to get there you have drift boats basically anchored in the good locations. :(

What an incredible resource you have on the south shore! Ontario stopped regular stocking 15 years ago so the runs have thinned out considerably. I don't have the patience for shoulder to shoulder, full contact fishing anymore so I've traded numbers for solitude on smaller tribs.

I think ,you did the right thing in going to the DSR…if there will be any willing salmon that will actually "take" a fly ,it would be there…but, like you said, "Flossers,can definitely screw it up for you, as they will have tons of hookups that will spook the other salmon in that run…tough fishing for sure, but ,you came out a winner! Actually, I bet that good soaking rain increased your chances despite the discomfort. W/out it ,there wouldn't be so many freshies running and being so active…just like trout, they have to be sunlight shy.
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 3 года назад
Yeah... I only fished the DSR for salmon because of their willingness to take a fly and the overall experience. I booked my date several weeks in advance but got lucky that the rain hit just before I got there. It looks like you are using regular streamer hooks, which sometimes get straightened out by the salmon. Have you ever tried tying your flies on regular salmon fly hooks? I enjoy watching you get takes from salmon by "Euronymphing" in shallow water. Do you think you could get those fish to take by swinging a lightly weighted or unweighted wooly bugger on a floating line? The idea would be to keep the fly near the surface to avoid foul hooking. Finally, I like your Highlander; it looks just like mine!
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 3 года назад
I have experimented with hooks the last few years. I used to use bigger hooks and bigger flies but moved to smaller hooks and smaller flies to combat the straightening of hooks. This year I found a heavier streamer hook to use and none of those straightened out. In face I only had 1 hook bend out the whole trip and that was on of the older style hooks. I had some salmon style hooks but the ones I had were even more flexible... The search goes on for the perfect hook. I think I was closer this year but could still do better. Yes... I have tried swinging before and have watched salmon follow my fly and take it while doing that. I've been thinking more and more about doing this lately and may experiment with it more. I like nymphing but there is no mistaking a take on the swing :) As for the highlander... it is the best vehicle I've ever owned. It is almost 10 years old and 190K miles and going strong. My daughter turns 16 next year and it will be 10 years old so I'm planning on a new vehicle next year but keeping the Highlander too.

Nice video truly enjoyed it! I would like to to point out that I saw you were putting a lot of upward pressure and sometimes in the opposite direction of the fish's run , this will cause the line to break on a fish. You must always (or try to as close) apply pressure in a perpendicular direction to the fish's head, A fish can exert a lot of force in the forward direction by propulsion from the tail but not much in other directions . Think of it like driving a car and steering it vs breaking, if you try to put the breaker your line will snap , but if you try to steer it wont. Like laws of motion in physics , when perpendicular force is applied to an object in motion the speed of the body will not change. The direction WILL change. If the force remains perpendicular to the new direction. Here the "Speed " is the propulsion force of the fish. When you are applying force closer to the path of the fish the pressure should be minimal only to keep the hook pinned. You would have to constantly twist , rotate and move to maintain perpendicular or close to of an angle . Keep a very light drag only enough to keep the hooks pinned keep light contact with the spool and use your thumb/palm as drag when you hav better angles and turn the fish. Its easier said than done but if you have this in your mind and are aware of it you ill land more.
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 3 года назад
That's a good explanation. I always try to keep side pressure on the fish. I talk about this a lot in my videos but when the fish runs I'll often keep the rod high to keep them from tangling me on rocks. The salmon that typically will bite are the fresh fish and I'm probably less than a mile from the lake where I fish so these fish are fresh and can kick your butt. Most of the time there is not much you can do except hold on and hope you can turn them... especially if they are running up or down stream. I try to turn them when I can exactly like you said but it is not always successful or possible with fresh fish. The second video from that year I have a much better landing ratio and I honestly think I fought them better than in this video.
@MrSurfangler
@MrSurfangler 3 года назад
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany Yep I can understand, Light tackle and fast /powerful fish is always a challenge. I guess the freespool style fighting might be easier for me as I am targeting them on a centrepin or a bait-caster. I picked up this style of fighting fish while fishing for powerful groupers and GT in the rocks on relatively lighter tackle, The fish can't rub off/cause abrasion without any tension on the line. The Sensitivity of the fingers on the spool and the feedback it gives is hard to match .My landing ratio went up when I moved away from spinning gear , fighting with drag to a freespool fight. Regarding side pressure I observed that sometimes it was sideways with respect to the direction you were facing but not sideways as compared to the direction of the fish's run. I hope you land bigger/chromer fish this season. Regarding tippets and teeth, I have been thinking about using twisted leader setup(which we use while fishing snakeheads, barracudas and other fish that have dog tooth) but on ultralight tippets for example instead of a 0.07inch tippet you use two 0.04inch tippets in a twisted/braided setup, this causes the teeth to slide into the twists instead of cutting the leader. Worth seeing how supple/ rigid this ends up worth a try I would say! Just trying to put as many odds in our favour as possible we really need them!

@WhiteDogTrailCompany 3 года назад
@@MrSurfangler Very cool! You seem to have a lot of experience. Appreciate the feedback!
@MrSurfangler
@MrSurfangler 3 года назад
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany I used to live in India and fish for tropical saltwarer fish from the rocks. Were powerful fish are feeding on smaller bait in the sharp rocks, unlike the smooth rocks in the river these rocks are sharp and chipped from the waves, if you have tension on the line and it touches these sharp edges its game over so the ability to go from fighting drag/pressure to zero was critical for me . I moved to Toronto,Canada 2.5 years ago.

I've hit the Joss late in the afternoon and had good success... but I would honestly rather find holding water that is not a big hole because the fish that hold where people are not fishing will likely be more aggressive. Its called fishing, not flossing, or drifting!!! You change your bait when you need to, you change your fly when you need to, fly fishermen use 9ft leaders, do you call them flossers if they catch fish??? You change your technique when your fishing if something doesn't work or you catch nothing and maybe you still catch nothing, FISHING!!! ✌
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 3 года назад
I specifically target fish that are willing to bite. If they're not willing to bite then I don't catch fish (like most of that morning in the video) I change a lot of things while I fish if I'm not getting actual bites but my setup is optimized to avoid flossing or fouling fish because I'm not interested in hooking up that way... it still happens... but when I actually start hooking up it is usually because the fish are taking the fly. In the case of this video I removed ALL split shot from my line and downsized my line.. my hook placements and activity of the fish indicate that I'm getting bites and not flossing. I have a video on how I set everything up too if you're interested. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UHTWkr0L1Nw.html

@@peterock8217 No worries. Getting salmon to bite is a way harder way to fish and you will get frustrated (like I was in this video). I believe the salmon will bite for a lot of reasons...first of all they are the top predator and have a killer instinct. When you get them fresh from the lake they can be really aggressive! I honestly don't know anything about the Oswego fishery... never fished it. I was fishing the Douglaston Salmon Run on the Salmon River. Some people don't like to pay to fish but I find it to be a drastically different experience from the rest of the river (for the most part). I have literally had 1 bad day in the last 5 years there and that was because I was there way too early (really early Sept) and there were very few fish. I have had so many good days at the DSR including some of my best days of fishing in my life! I would recommend it. We are starting to get a little later in the run... not sure how many more fresh fish will be pouring into the river... from what I understand so far it has been a good run. But then come the steelies!!! :)

@@WhiteDogTrailCompany Yup, sounds hood. The black hole is just up river from the dsr, I heard and could see all those guys fishing the north end of it!!! Lots of action there, except two Sundays ago, an extremely weird quite day, no one was there! Thanks again man for your videos, and I am going to try some of your techniques for sure, hopefully I'll return soon! Three hour drive form PA for me, we'll see.

Love picking you DSR guys beautiful flies out from the backs and fins. I have a nice collection. I fish for free on public property. You are just feeding the land monger and making it more expensive why do you do this?

LOL... To each their own. :) I fish the DSR because of the overall experience, less people and the willingness of the fish to hit a fly. It is well worth the money for that experience to me.
