I go over the options available for fishing salmon in small rivers. I cover centerpin, baitcasting, and spinning reels, as well as line, floats, and leader material.

Salmon mostly my spining tackle steelhead more the baitcaster but certainly not exclusive by any means for me its 70 percent spining 30 percent baitcaster .go with good reel yup agree doesnt have to be the most expensive brand only 3 blank factories in the world after all

A spincasting reel is the reel little kids use that goes on top of the rod like a baitcast. The last rod/reel you pointed out is a spinning reel. Daiwa Regal 3000 is a super reel. 22lb drag and never breaks. At $80 it’s a smoking deal. Good video Petr!

I guess it's called a spin casting setup, but the reel is a spinning reel. I don't even remember exactly what I said. It's a long monologue to do without any mistakes. Thanks for the clarification.

@@petrhermanadventures9509 all good. I used to work at Cabela’s and people would ask for a spin casting setup and then get mad when I showed them the spincasting rod and reels. 🤦‍♂️

My first time with you Petr, I hope you're not offended by my opening comment... To be a jerk about it, there's a big difference between 'spinning' (the egg-beater) and 'spin-casting' (closed-face) reels. I use my spin-casters (closed-face) to cast 1/32oz to 3/16oz lures on a 7'9" Okuma kokanee light rod and a 7'6" light Ugly Stik which is the only Ugly Stik I actually enjoy using. I personally prefer bait-casters, from the bigger 70/700 sizes down to 'pixie' size 50 for all my fishing, unless casting into the wind. I once tried a center-pin, and yup, I'm just not good enough. I would need a lot, lot more regular practice. Drift/floating for me means bait-casters. However, I did buy a couple bait-feeder spinning reels (egg-beater) from Okuma & Penn and they are on par with bait-casters for feeding line out on long floats/drift style fishing. They're a bit heavier but not much, and the drags on decent spinning reels are exceptional when needed. VERY VERY good advice re: mono. I like braid/fused lines for a lot of my fishing... But I use a lot more mono and love it. Flourocarbon for me is, like you, leader material only. Your comment re: barbless and pressure was spot on. And I appreciated your simple approach. I'm a sucker for everything out there that looks cool, and often that creates option-paralysis. I'm now a subscriber

Welcome aboard, and I appreciate your comments. Sometimes my audience learns from me, and sometimes I learn from them, that's great. English is actually the fourth language I learned in my life and I don't get everything right. My fishing style continues to evolve as I try out different gear and techniques. cheers and thanks for subscribing.

It' is not my intention to show you fishing videos. I think it has a bad impact on the sport where the video gets filmed. I don't want to blow up spots. Sure there might be a bit, but I have to be smart about where and when.

Your experience is normal. This time of year it's possible to run into a hungry school of them and limit out, but most people don't get one every time out. I've had several on, haven't even landed one. The video is already filmed, I just have to edit. Give me a day or two.

Is 100 yd of 20 lb braid with mono backing enough for the Vedder? Will any fish take me to the backing? Thanks.
@petrhermanadventures9509
@petrhermanadventures9509 5 месяцев назад
I fish mono with backing. I only spool on 40 yards or so, never had a fish take it to the backing. If you want to fish braid, I'd recommend 40 pound braid with 10 to 15 foot mono bumper on the sharp end. I prefer mono for float fishing because it's more elastic and I lose fewer fish, but for jigs and spoons I use braid because I get better casting and hook set.

Huh my success totally other way get more fish tossing lures than floats but i probably fish a way different part of the river too😊

I use lures a lot more in November when the river is less busy and there are fewer fish..

They make a spinning reel with a free-running spool, hit the button and the spool rolls. I'm like my bait casters though, I've had the same Abu's for a few decades. You are on point about mono, there's a lot of stretch and shock-absorbing, braid is pretty unforgiving.

My first time fishing the Vedder in over 7 yrs was Friday. Brought my 7wt , float rod , and ml spinning rod . Caught fish on all. Hatch coho on croc, and pink jig under a short float, on a spinning reel. First year not just using fly rod. And another hatch on sunday on my 6wt floating line pink fly

Why cant i have a heavy line but the leader matching the rod specs? Is there anything wrong with this set up? I mean the braded lines are pretty thing to work with. So i got the thicker one for convinience but it's double weight of the rod. But the leader is 10lb.
@petrhermanadventures9509
@petrhermanadventures9509 11 месяцев назад
There is no problem with running a heavier line. The rating just tells you what weight the rod was designed for. Most people run a 10 to 20 foot mono bumper on top of their braid so that they don't leave main line in the river if it gets hung up.

Petr; you are missing the single hand fly, switch and spey? :) The fun starts when you have to decide what to take, otherwise you end up carrying 5 rods and the landing net! :)

when my freezer is full, then I might start playing around with the starvations stick. It always looks so beautiful, but I don't ever see the fly guys carrying fish home. Ok, I'm joking around but there is some truth to it.

Interesting video. Centerpin might be a fun fly fishing-adjacent technique I'd like to try sometime. Do folks ever use flies in any of those gear setups instead of eggs/beads?
@iancollings5047
@iancollings5047 Год назад
Typically not the flies you are used to, but those big balanced leeches I showed you, some people call them jigs, like the one he showed in the video. :)

Yes, it's definitely possible to drift flies under a float. Coho like brown muddlers, blue attractors with flash and salmon egg immitation patterns. Easier to get flies into strike range this way too.
