Another great video and insight into your use of salt Ricky. As a hobbyist I'm always very reluctant to use salt in my pond I do however salt bath koi when my fish are looking stressed and I haven't been able to find any parasites. I a firm believer that salt is essential for the recovery of the Osmosis system and the fishes ability produce mucus. Thanks for the video, it's always interesting to know how dealers use salt too.👍
Hi Ricky, love the videos 👍👍I have a parasite problem and have used FMG. I now want to salt my pond as the koi look stressed and are on the bottom, but can't use salt with formalin. How long do I have to wait to put the salt in the pond. I would be very grateful for any help you can give. Terry.
Good video pal I know guy who as high end koi and run koi club and he just uses salt for parasite except for flukes as use superverm he said best where to treat for parasite
Unfortunately due to government regulations the majority of treatments like you have in the UK to deal with parasites are no longer available so salt is one of our main go tos when it comes to treating koi so having some on hand is a must. A salt meter is one of the best purchases you can make. Also important to remember is every time you do a water change or filter clean where water is sent to waste adding water changes the salt level so monitoring is crucial.
@@Ricky_Stoddart_Koi I live in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada about 50km east of Toronto. A few years back the government brought in a pesticide ban that included things like weed control products, insect control, etc and unfortunately its broad range also included koi related products. Supposedly the ban was to minimize cancer risk but big money places like golf courses can still used the banned products (guess we know who is paying off the government officials and leaving the normal tax payer out in the cold).
For bacterial issues, what is the ChloramineT dosage rate? I have salted the pond to 0.55%. my water PH is 8.5. What % of salt i should have, and also standard does of ChloramineT?
If it's a true bacterial outbreak neither will cure it. Identification of the bacteria and antibiotics will be your only hope. To disinfect the water I recommend virkon s.
Hi ricky iv had issues with nitrite spikes on hana meter it was 72 which works out 0.25 ish ammonia is 0.8 which again is higher than id like in the orange zone so i keep salted until i get a secomd filter is at 3000 gallons and 20 fish over 40cm i feel i may need another filter to help my nexus 320 any ideas what i can use to go onto a bakki shower as ive been told i cant go from pond to shower
@@Ricky_Stoddart_Koi ponds not very old 18 months tho filter was running on my pond before , tho i know it can take years to mature, kh is always steady 7 ph always around 8.2-8.4 feeding 20g a time 6 times a day flow rate turn over once every 2 ish hours
@@Ricky_Stoddart_Koi no what I discovered was a koi with 2 raised scales but on close inspection found small red sores in different places I did salt bath and topically treat , the bath was a quarter ounce per gallon icreasing to half ounce it seemed to help a lot it is to cold now to continue it still has a couple of raised scales
Just rewatched the video to see what you thought about salt. I'm currently facing 0.93 ppm nitrite levels in my koi pond right now with the introduction of a higher based protein food. The water temp is 65-67F (18.3-19.4C) and I have introduced salt to my pond. The levels have been elevated for close to 2 weeks now and was wondering if you have any suggestions? My ammonia level is spot on being around 0.04 ppm when feeding. Thank you!
@@Ricky_Stoddart_Koi the parameters went down as the temperature increased so I increased the feed by one feeding more and the nitrite spiked to .90 ppm again. Any comments on this?
@@beast8623 it seems to be your system just adjusting to the new feeding levels. It’s perfectly normal you just have to ride it out until your filter adjusts.
@@Ricky_Stoddart_Koi When you mention it shouldn't take long, realistically, when should the levels come down? I also apologize, I realize I said .90 ppm when in actuality its .1ppm or .09 ppm
Awesome video Ricky 💯👌 The only time I have had to use salt to kill parasites due to having my best friend's sturgeon in the pond that was I nightmare in itself. You can you salt to kill/knock back blanket weed but it's then a bitch to get out, Also in sure there is a way of calculating the volume of a pond using salt⁉️ 👍👍👍
The method of using salt to calculate pond volume is very good especially if it’s an irregular shape. As for blanketed and parasites again it’s not my choice.
@@Ricky_Stoddart_Koi is not my first choice either tbh I know about calculating water volume with salt but don't know how its done could you possibly cover this in a video ⁉️⁉️ Vince 👍👍👍
Salt baths are effective for individual fish but don’t help against the free swimming parasites. You also need to be accurate with the dosage otherwise they can be fatal.
