Thanks for this. Any view on my pet theory, that Fennell drew heavily on the character of Steerpike in Gormenghast for Oliver Quick? He is closer than Highsmith's Mr Ripley. Nobody reads Peake nowadays so Fennell can get away with channelling his sinister invention, with little fear of having her source of inspiration identified.

I wasn't familiar with Steerpike to make that point of reference (not many others either, who went to Tom Ripley, which is also very evident), but that seems to me to be a good observation.

Oh, shit...my brother asked me if I wanted to see this movie this weekend, and I don't think he knows about all the freaky sex scenes, he just sees every movie that comes out. I was interested, but I think I'll save this one for a solo watch. Thanks for saving me from having an incredibly awkward viewing experience, Mathew. Also, I know I already said this on Twitter, but happy birthday! :)

Regarding that certain 1999 thriller you compared this to, Fennell recently said in an interview that, while she loves the work of the author of the book that film was based on, the film itself wasn’t a direct influence on this one. Sure Jan…

See, I appreciated the shock value scenes. They’re definitely on the noes, sometimes to the point of being comical, but you can’t say they weren’t memorable 😂

I haven't seen the movie, but from what I know of it...I kind of like the idea of a man enthusiastically having sex with a woman while she is on her period. As a woman, it's kind of refreshing to see, since most movies and TV shows *still* treat women having periods as some shameful, disgusting thing. Even if it's for shock value, it's kind of cool. I don't know if a male director would have included that.

Emerald Fennell clearly is a very talented creative but It would be interesting to see her direct someone else's script or work with a co-writer as by the sounds of it having another voice in the room might have helped with the back half of the film. It was reported that she did some work on the script for the John Wick spin off 'Ballerina' [at the request of lead Ana De Armas] although it's unclear if she'll receive a credit [as at the time of writing she's not listed on the films IMDB].

Although the shock scenes may have not been completely necessary, I appreciated how the vamp and tub scene reveal pieces of Oli’s character earlier on in the movie. The dirt scene was a tad overdone. Without giving too much detail, I found that all these scenes jive with Oli’s symbolic representation in the center of the maze.

Did Oliver go to school with this huge plan? Why was he obsessed/ hated Felix? Why was Oliver so sexual with everyone? Most of his sexploits had no reason… it didn’t help him manipulate anyone. Maybe I’m just not smart enough to understand

Glad you enjoyed my take! Fennell has spoken more about the ending, and the more she does, it seems like she doesn't get her movie. She talks of Oliver being "the hero" when he's way worse than any of the entitled rich family - he kills people! - and the audience should be behind him, even when the film explicitly calls him a sociopathic parasite. The final dance was apparently a late change. The original ending had Oliver being served runny eggs again, implying for all his machinations that his victory is hollow and empty when he actually has everything. That ending would have been more in line with what was set up earlier. The dance solidifies the film's general confusion of itself.

@@FilmBrain The 'dance' scene does feel like a set piece dreamed up separately and shoehorned in [like you alluded to in the video with the other 'shock' scenes] even before I knew it was a late edition [and it clearly was memorable enough to get publicity-hence the song charting recently] but it does feel very tacked on and the original ending would fit the story better. It would be like 'Talented Mr Ripley' [spoilers] ending with the scene where he's happy on the boat with Peter [Tom's free and with someone who loves him for being Tom] rather than the actual ending [where his lies catch up with him and he has to kill the only person who loved him for being himself so his 'freedom' is a very pyrrhic victory].

@@FilmBrain I kind of get where Fennell is coming from with the 'Oliver is the hero' idea in the sense that most of the characters he meets are very unlikeable [especially Michael from the university and Farleigh]-possibly in a bid to make him come across as more sympathetic- but going back to 'Talented Mr Ripley', while Tom is softened considerably from his portrayal in the novel, it doesn't feel like were meant to route for/cheer on Tom at any point [and while Dickie and Freddy are not particularly nice people, Peter is nothing but kind and helpful to him which makes the ending hit hard] and certainly see Oliver as a 'villain protagonist'.

Saltburn is really picking up steam in Ireland. Even hearing the Dublin teenagers talking about it on the way to the chip shop. It's doing well. However, I do know exactly the film you are thinking of as Saltburn approaches act 3 because I saw it for the first time last summer. Maybe its another one of those '20 year rules' examples.

I've been getting audio trailers for this movie on Spotify for the past month or so and none of them conveyed anything about what the movie would be about at all, but it did make me remember the name and click on this review so that's good I guess! I have to admint I was so intrigued by this review's many references to twists and events without spoilers that I caved and looked up the synopsis on wikipedia. I won't spoil it obviously, but oh my god, those twists really are terrible, and I'm glad I didn't watch this movie now. Your review and the synopsis actually remind me of a series on Netflix I saw called Behind Her Eyes, which had really interesting buildup and some similar themes to Saltburn, and then right in the last minutes of the last episode had a stupid twist ending which felt totally unearned and ruined all the promising buildup. I think that one was based on a book so maybe they were sticking to its plot, but if so the plot sucked and they should have changed it. It dramatically went from 'wow I'd highly recommend this' to 'oh my god I wouldn't recommend this to anyone', quite an achievement. It sounds like Saltburn was a similar experience. I'm sure Barry Keoghan is great though, he was excellent in Top Boy.

Maybe it's my asexual brain but the 'shocking' scenes for me weren't all that bad, possibly because a normal sex scene would have made me just as uncomfortable. I appreciated that in this case, the uncomfortable feeling was a bit more interesting and character driven. I liked the ending as well, just wish they'd given a bit more time to the build up with Rosamund Pike as I love suspense thrillers. Also, I loved your 'sinister university challenge contestant' line, so on point and really made me laugh.

I didn’t think any of the “shock scenes” were there for shock. His lines say one thing, his actions/visuals say another. On purpose. Most of those “shock” scenes are about what Oliver really wanted and not what he SAYS he wanted. Oliver is lying to himself. That’s something compulsive liars say to themselves after the fact. They completely revise things where they are the genius or the hero or the victim. I guess a lot of people have the blessing of not knowing a compulsive liar? With that context, everything Oliver did made sense, and …people trust the police too much. A real forensic investigator is working on a multi part analysis of … things that police would most likely investigate on Reddit. Came to the same conclusion anyone who follows true crime , which is, that whatever would be the simplest answer and the least amount of work is what the police would conclude if there was no pushback. Especially the first couple of events. About uncomfortable scenes being “prolonged” Steve McQueen does that too. Fennell and McQueen don’t want to give the audience an out. I personally like being challenged like that.

This movie isn't for the easily screamish, so I'd definitely avoid watching it in front of more straitlaced family members. Certain scenes appeared to be inserted merely for shock value, though I hope that Barry Keoghan receives another Oscar nomination.

I honestly hate movies that add polarizing scenes for no more than shock value but in interviews, the writer/director insists that the scene is necessary. "It's a masterpiece of a scene, a thought-provoking scene that needs to be witnessed."🙄

@@strawberrylime33If you’ve seen Saltburn I’d love to hear your issue with those scenes, for me I thought they were needed as a way of showing just how intensely obsessed the main character was with his own feelings and sense of power that he went beyond what regular people would do. Plus it’s really only 3 scenes in the film, spread out a decent amount across the movie.

They weren’t inserted for shock value. If those scenes were cut, the audience wouldn’t know Oliver is lying to himself. Which is what he is doing at the end.

It’s disappointing, the movie you described sounds like something right up my alley. Too bad it sounds like it doesn’t stick the landing and went the Riverdale route.

Disappointing movie. In the end i didn’t care. saltburn is.. boring. Too much long dialogue scenes. I dont mind long scenes and dialogue but the movie felt pointless.
