Oliver came up with the dead father story after he irritated Felix and Felix brushed him off. What people said about Felix was true: he grows tired of his "toys". So Oliver created the story to gain sympathy and make himself a charity case for Felix.

Go relook at the breakfast table scene when the ghost story about the poet Shelley gives the mom “chill bumps.” Felix is seen walking past the window even though Felix is sitting at the table. So much foreshadowing in this, and also explanations of each character’s weakness that Oliver will use against them. The mom tells Oliver that her daughter is a masochist, and that’s when Oliver changes his approach to the daughter, dominating her while also demonstrating complete acceptance of her body (the period-blood scene) which plays to her bulemia. Oliver’s skill, as with many sociopaths, is an ability to read people. He figures out early that Felix wants to feel like a useful person because of his unearned wealth. So he becomes someone Felix can rescue. The daughter’s weakness (aside from being an isolated teenaged girl who never meets anyone until Felix brings them home for the summer) is insecurity about her body, so the blood scene is not just for shock value. Farleigh can’t be emotionally manipulated because as an outsider himself, he sees that Oliver is working an angle. But Farleigh, like the audience, hasn’t guessed the lengths Oliver will go to, so becomes the target of a frame-up. (His cocaine poured into the wine will show that Felix overdosed, and the family will blame Farleigh for making the coke available. What seems rushed is really puzzle pieces clicking into place.

Barry Keoghan had some good words when it came to the bathtub scene that had me see that all of the bizarre scenes in this film aren’t just weird for the sake of weird, but very intentional, he said: “He’s submitting to this obsession, trying to figure out what it is that he’s chasing, almost like a sacrifice with the way he lowers himself into the bath and when he gets down there, he’s confused, helpless, sick.” it’s what made me realize this film wasn’t just another Parasyte or The Talented Mr. Ripley, because it was never about Saltburn, it was about Felix. Oliver was whole-heartily driven by his obsession with him. and of course the director confirming Oliver was “profoundly in love” with Felix made that clear as-well lol, but i don’t know how i didn’t see before that Oliver is an unreliable narrator. even when it cuts back to present day Oliver during Felix’s death, he’s still crying. after Felix was dead, he felt like he had no choice, Saltburn had to become the new obsession. something to blur over his infatuation with, it became the idea of him. super neat film.

Annabelle only wanted to sleep with Oliver to make Felix jealous. She had to drink heavily just to make out with him. Once Oliver said it wouldn’t matter to Felix if they slept together, she left. Sotheby’s is a high end auction house. While the scenes are “shocking” they are all character motivated. A lot of people aren’t too fazed by the period scene. The dance scene was 11 takes. Emerald Fennell is a very complex writer. She won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for her very first film.

1:02:40 It's a Hoyer lift or something similar. I've heard of some Medicare patients struggling to get approved for them and even then they don't pay 100% of it. It's to support the weight of the patient in lifting them in and out of bed and such since not all caregivers are bodybuilder types (also helps make the move smoother to reduce accidents, which obviously Oliver didn't care about). Don't take the comments here too hard. I thought it was a good first effort, you took the feedback in stride, you'll improve the rhythm of commentary to comment as you practice, and for your first go you picked a relatively challenging movie with a lot of layers. Also one that brings out people with strong opinions. The reddit board for Saltburn is the same way.

Before my best friend became my best friend, she was bullied because she wasn't from the city, because of her old clothes, because of the way she wanted to 'fit in' with the rest. Oliver was a psychopath which means he is smart, observant to his benefit, highly manipulative, & without emotions except for primitive ones like anger, hate, & frustration. He does not feel love, empathy, kindness, etc. Psychopaths can feign the nicer, more socially acceptable emotions & express them (for manipulative purposes) but they do not feel them. One of his “tells” in the movie is his predominantly flat affect throughout. Everything he did from the beginning was a test to see if they would ever put up a boundary for him & THEY NEVER DID. This is seminal to encounters w/a psychopath & their ability to proceed forward. We saw that as his behavior escalated in the movie. The family was very dysfunctional themselves but privileged- your observation that they experience “life” through “lesser” people is correct & was his perfect segway into their lives. He had already observed them on campus & in the debate class w/Farleigh. I don’t necessarily think Oliver planned to murder them from the beginning but 2 things happened which I think may have provoked him to that end: 1. When he heard Pamela killed herself & saw the callous reaction of the family may have produced anger in him 2. When Felix took Oliver to see his mom for his birthday, found him out, & confronted him w/being a liar, con. It is quite risky to confront a psychopath. Oliver tried to excuse it away but Felix was not having it. For sure, he decided to kill Felix at that point. The family assumed a lot about Oliver because they were narcissistic, elite, & considered everyone who wasn’t them as inferior. They never improved the lives of those in their orbit - just used them for their own purposes. Ergo, their tunnel vision. They were all horrible people 🤷🏻‍♀️ that were an easy target for Oliver because of his predatory nature. This was a game for Oliver & they never saw him coming. So much more in Saltburn to analyze! The movie was brilliant & very psychologically cerebral - love this director! The casting, acting, script & dialogue, film shots, etc. were perfection. She is the new (& better) Hitchcock - another movie she did that you might enjoy is The Power of the Dog. Another brilliant film that is worth the time. Appreciate your reaction - maybe watch it again through a different lens?

I’d say it’s a good reaction but there are several key moments and dialogues that you missed either because you were talking above it or because you were checking your phone. Doing research is ok but you should take notes and come back to it later so you can check it still when you do your review. Oh and about the “vampire” scene, please do not say that women don’t enjoy that kind of thing. It’s not my case but it’s always exciting to know that a man is not rebuffed by something natural and is willing to “worship” you the exact way you are, and a lot of women like that. We just don’t shout it because it’s still a very taboo kind of thing. (“worship” is the word used by Fennell). That’s it for me. Sorry if there are any mistakes, English is not my first language.

The point is Venetia felt worshipped. Which was the point. I also think Oliver really enjoyed sleeping with people. He tried to resume a relationship with Venetia and he didn’t care at all that Annabelle was using him. She literally had trashed him earlier. He just wanted to get some! For period sex, there is even a joking achievement called “redwings”. I think we all know what that means now. That’s something people definitely do, it’s just that it does not get discussed.

You can tell a woman directed the movie, the shocking moments in the film created buzz but without them it felt more like a soap opera. A little unrealistic but entertaining none the less. It's kinda like 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' but minus the police interrogation. I would have liked a silhouette of the butler at the very end of Oliver's dance to show that retribution is at hand.
@joshandcasey

The screenplay mentions at the end that Oliver still has Duncan to deal with. Screenplays sometimes provide a bit of additional "canon" for some of those densely packed movies with a lot of hidden details, like this one or Hereditary.

So, a woman can only write soap operas, or it’s a soap opera because a woman wrote it? Fennel isn’t about audience catharsis. I find she goes for a bigger swing. Also, some people do get away with stuff like this. Ever heard of Lori Vallow? 5 husbands, 2 “died” and a string of other people connected to her “died”, but no one figured out anything was weird until children went missing. *shrugs*

Damn you guys didn't get this movie at all. Also the British aristocratic culture completely flew over your head. Harping on and on about the size of the TV when in a historic estate a large TV would be out of place and seem tacky to the aristocracy. They just have a TV for sh!ts and giggles. I'm sure that's odd to Americans but you people tend think bigger equals better. The shocking scenes were pretty well placed considering Oliver definitely has a personality disorder. Probably ASPD and he is a compulsive liar, obsessive and has poor impulse control. Even when he could get caught in the act, he does it anyway, completely brazenly and out in the open. Either a psychopath or sociopath he lacks empathy and morality and wants what he wants no matter the cost to others. He will do whatever it takes to get what he wants. That was perfectly depicted in this movie. The rich kids absolutely would speak that way especially in 2006. The dialogue was brilliant and it's a beautifully shot film. The only issue I had with the movie is the very end were everything is revealed in a little montage. By that point, the viewer knows already what Oliver is capable of. All we need to confirm our suspensions was him killing the mother and inheriting everything.
@joshandcasey
@joshandcasey 5 месяцев назад
I think we got most of that. While we may not know a lot about the British aristocracy, the way they behave and talk is no different than any wealthy family here. And the TV thing for us was more just us joking. Granted, I will stand by the fact that bigger is better to a degree when it comes to a television haha. Nothing to do with just being 'American'. And of course Oliver is a psychopath. We mention it. It was beautifully shot and we overall enjoyed it.

The director/writer Emerald Fennell won BAFTA/Oscar for Promising Young Woman, acted in the BBC series Call the Midwife, and is an Oxford graduate so she knows the people/layout of the University. Elordi is Australian. Compare Keoghan to Matt Damon's performance in The Talented Mr. Ripley and would love your thoughts. The Insitiut de Rosey is a boarding school that is so exclusive that it only accepts 10 percent of students per country with an average cost of 150K per year not including sports and two separate campuses in Switzerland. Musicians the King of Morocco, , Billionaire Aristotle Onassis, and the banking family the Rothchilds went there.

@@joshandcaseyshe was a writer on Killing Eve and played a young Camilla in The Crown. Promising Young Woman was her first film and won the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for that film. She comes from a wealthy background and does not hide it. She acknowledges she could work for free when others couldn’t. Her father is a VERY high end jewelry designer and her 16th b-Day party and engagement party was reported on in a British gossip magazines. (She’s also a big fan of Jordan Peele.) Her films are multi-layered and covered difficult content. I have also seen people hate people on scholarship and can’t afford stuff. I didn’t think it was over selling at all.
