If Denis gets green lit for Dune Messiah, I will lose my mind. His vision of Dune is masterful. Big shout out to all the costume designers, production crew, gaffers, lighting crew, craft services, CGI people, set design, etc; all the behind the scenes folks who don't get credit. Y'all did amazing!!!

If you haven't read the novel or Dune series, you should. The amalgamation of religious traditions over the 32 000 years to the Duniverse alters beliefs more than could be grasped from the movie. As an example, the ancestors of the Fremen were ZenSunni wanderers, people of the Misr, compared to BuddIslamic varieties more widely spread across the Imperium, the Navachristianity of Chusuk, the atheistic regime of Ix and agnosticism of the Spacing Guild. Add to that the influence of the superstitions implanted by the Bene Gesserit and the mythos of Arrakis is very different to any religious teaching you may recognise. Therefore, although Dune has a number of Islamic threads sewn through it, it is not Islam as anyone living would understand. Bilal kaifa.

Javier Bardem was born in the Canary Islands, and although it is a possession of Spain, it is off the coast of Morocco and the disputed territory of Western Sahara. Which is probably why he looks more like a North African/Arab than a classic European Spaniard. If you look at the cast list, there are quite a number of Arab or African origin actors playing the parts of the Fremen.
@JiixBooks
@JiixBooks 3 месяца назад
He is Spanish [Castilian and Leónese], Basque, Catalan and there are barely any leading roles played by SWANA actors. Putting them as background decoraction adds to the problem, good enough for decorations but not enough to be a proper lead

I'm reminded a bit of Anthony Quinn who was Mexican but played Auda Abu Tayi in Lawrence of Arabia. The historical Auda was an influence on Frank Herbert's creation of Stilgar. And I feel like Bardem channels a bit of Anthony Quinn's Auda performance.

It's such an important part of the whole world of the book. It seems like it's been rolled back quite a bit in the movies. The Fremen were descended from the "Zensunni Wanderers", who practiced a religion that had evolved from both Islam and Buddhism.

I really loved it, the movie was great, but the pacing was really weird for me. You said that it was too slow, but with all the visions and jumping around at the start I was often confused when will the movie cut back to the character reflecting of what was in the vision, just to realise we aren't even in the vision anymore. One other thing I found too sudden is Paul's decision to go south, when all of the time until that he was set that he wouldn't go. Then when he is faced with a decision, he goes away to think and suddenly he decided that he will do it now, without very thin reasoning. All in all, it was beautiful, I enjoyed it and will read the book as soon as I get my hands over it. (Not related, but your make up is so pretty, this golden eyeshadow looks so good)

I can see where you’re coming from but I feel like they showed the torture of the fremen and Feyd tightening his grips on the north as a reason to why Paul was pushed to go south! And thank you so much I always try to match my makeup to the theme or colour pattern the movie tends to have gold was a choice based of the dessert, thank you for noticing that 😊

I really want Denis to do Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune if Messiah does well. The further the books went the crazier shit got, mainly cause Frank Herbert was eating a lot of magic mushrooms 😂 But seriously when the giant worm human hybrid god king shows up that is the best

Q: Without the sacred melange Muad'dib would not have become leader of all Fremen. Without her holy experience Alia would not be Alia. A: Without your blind Fremen cruelty you would not be a priest. Ahhh, I know you Fremen. You think Muad'dib is yours because he mated with Chani, because he adopted Fremen customs. But he was an Atreides first and he was trained by a Bene Gesserit adept. He possessed disciplines totally unknown to you. You thought he brought you new organization and a new mission. He promised to transform your desert planet into a water-rich paradise. And while he dazzled you with such visions, he took your virginity! Q: Such heresy does not change the fact that the Ecological Transformation of Dune proceeds apace. A: And I committed the heresy of tracing the roots of that transformation, of exploring the consequences. That battle out there on the Plains of Arrakeen may have taught the universe that Fremen could defeat Imperial Sardaukar, but what else did it teach? When the stellar empire of the Corrino Family became a Fremen empire under Muad'dib, what else did the Empire become? Your Jihad only took twelve years, but what a lesson it taught. Now, the Empire understands the sham of Muad'dib's marriage to the Princess Irulan! Q: You dare accuse Muad'dib of sham! A: Though you kill me for it, it's not heresy. The Princess became his consort, not his mate. Chani, his little Fremen darling -- she's his mate. Everyone knows this. Irulan was the key to a throne, nothing more. Q: It's easy to see why those who conspire against Muad'dib use your Analysis of History as their rallying argument! A: I'll not persuade you; I know that. But the argument of the conspiracy came before my Analysis. Twelve years of Muad'dib's Jihad created the argument. -Dune Messiah, F. Herbert

Agreed about the slowish start. Denis said that he wanted audiences who hadn’t seen the first one to be able to jump right in; the extra world building was for them.

Important to remember while he was inspired by many cultures, the fremen were as Zen as they were Sunni. Zensunni religion. Also, this is 10k years in the future, when religion and modern cultures no longer exist. Trust me, they are not practicing your religion.
@kedbreak136
@kedbreak136 2 месяца назад
The 10k year not being based on common era calendar but on the time after the establishment of the space guild. So this could be hundreds of thousands of years in the future, reinforcing your point even further.
@BlunderMunchkin
@BlunderMunchkin 2 месяца назад
It's 24,000 years in the future. 10,191 AG. AG stands for After Guild, which refers to the Spacing Guild. The Spacing Guild is formed somewhere around 16,000 AD, meaning that 10,191 AG is somewhere around 26,000 AD. Thus, 24,000 years from now.

Lol, the amount of praise! But hey, the first one was amazing, so this tracks. Regarding what you mention about Arab representation... I would actually venture a guess that they deliberately avoided some of that, in order to not, well, step on any toes. But I actually kinda like everyone (all the factions, all the characters) are basically representing some people/nation/culture/religion/etc. but are then presented in the movie as... something else. I mean, it would make sense, too, after 10,000 years in space that some characteristics would shift. That's just my take on it, though. Good review, although it would maybe have been nice to hear more about your thoughts on the themes and messaging. Although that might move you into spoiler territory. Ah well.
@FatmaFarooqi
@FatmaFarooqi 4 месяца назад
I understand that but for example the Fremen language if I remember from other people who have read the books and understand it is rooted in Arabic and the person who developed it for the film was trying to negate that if I remember correctly(apologies if this is wrong) I just wish there was an outright acknowledgment in the source material and cultures that Frank Herbert has taken from! As for themes of the film I would absolutely love to talk more about them but the film is not out yet and I don’t want to spoil it for anyone I did try to mention a few of the surprises and interesting plot points without mentioning much as not everyone has read the books, me included 😅 I might make a spoiler review with more in depth analysis if people are interested 🤷🏻‍♀️
@Gnug215
@Gnug215 4 месяца назад
@@FatmaFarooqi For sure, they could have done a lot more. My suspicion is just that they downplayed the comparisons (sometimes the Dune lore specifies that certain groups/houses/factions are even downright descendants from groups on Earth from before everyone went to space - so it's not just vague or metaphorical comparisons) in order to avoid... well, being too political. Such things are a bit of a minefield today. :)

Did you realize that Frank Herbert also included some of the realities of Islam, such as the believers being misled into placing their faith in a normal person (false prophet), and taking that belief to a point where it spins out of control, outward to the point of //peski//ocide? Dune is also a book that warns about leadership, and the different styles of dangerous leaderships. One of these is faith-based leadership. (Another warning being related the leadership by charismatic bravado and wishful goodness, which, for example, could be reflected onto modern day non-Islamic leaders such as Canada's Justin Trudeau)

"Frank Herbert also included some of the realities of Islam, such as the believers being misled into placing their faith in a normal person (false prophet" - We muslims don't belive in a false prophet we believe in a real one. You're circular logic is hilarious also Dune is about lawrance of arabia or how the british brainwashed the arabs to be divided up to break apart the caliphate. The story is a critique of colonialism not Islam.

Lmao Muslims don't believe in a false prophet we believe in a real one. Not to mention the dune books are about colonialism by the west and it's criticism. It shows how the west sabotages and manipulates local arabs or native for their own benifit. It takes inspiration from lawrance of arabia. This is not a critique of islam, don't expect much from people who worship a naked man on a cross.

Herbert took Islamic faith and pushed the faith 20,000 years (over 10,000 since end agaist the machines- Butlerian jihad) in future. How would Islam be off the Earth? In the book( and following books) humans are spread over hundreds of planets? There are elements of Islam but please understand this is set in the very far future. Things change. Wonderful review.

There are multiple aspects of Islam and Arab culture presented in Dune part 1 and 2. The last hour of the movie was just intense and it really pulls you into the movie. I absolutely loved the movie and the performances. The fact that this movie really touches on the importance of Imam Mahdi and the Messiah is incredible.

Read the books. The style was amazing. However, the relationship of Paul and Chani is completely wrong. They are supposed to be deeply in love and Chani is at odds with him throughout the movie. So many things were cut and so many things were added in that were unnecessary.

For sure, the movie's representation of Chani is far removed from the character in the book. It was as though they needed to make Chani a modern Western woman.

Yeah, he brought no presence to the role. It was a huge disappointment. Maybe he would have done well when he was younger, but at this point it looked like he had trouble just standing straight. All the power and intimidation that Walken used to convey was absent here.
