A beginner’s guide to starting a saltwater aquarium and adding corals to your reef tank! How do you cycle a saltwater aquarium? When can you add corals to your reef tank? This video goes over the process of cycling a saltwater aquarium through the nitrogen cycle and four things you can observe in your reef tank that indicate you are ready to add your first beginner corals!
Check out my beginner’s guide to reefing for more: bit.ly/2QJXf6H
Hope this video was useful to you starting your saltwater aquarium ♡ Let me know in the comments what corals you plan on adding to your reef tank!
______________________________________________
IS YOUR SALTWATER AQUARIUM READY FOR CORALS?
1. Made sure your reef tank has fully cycled through the nitrogen cycle.
2. Noticed algae blooms in your tank like green hair algae, cyano algae, dinoflagellates, or diatoms.
3. Kept stable water parameters.
4. Seen coraline algae growth on your aquascape.
The key to keeping saltwater aquariums is making sure you keep your water parameters stable. Keeping up with your maintenance of weekly water changes and regular testing of your water goes a long way to stability!

I bet you did not know that ammonia in a reef tank does not affect corals. They do not have blood (red blood cells) so they do not have hemoglobin which obviously does not affect them as it does fish. Do you think that the reef shows that are held accros the globe annually the owners go to the site a year prior to set up a tank just so you can see their coral? Not quite, They mix water, test temp, calcium, magnesium and salinity and they drop the corals in and you are then amazed by the beautiful corals and wish you had a tank like that. I have been in this hobby for almost 20 years, trust me the only reason people push the nitrogen cycle is because od the algae blooms you will experience which will likely wipe out your corals. But proper maintenance and weekly water changes will allow you to add corals to a new tank the minute the temperature of the tank is right.

Great for beginners yes, once you've been doing this a long time like min 5 yrs, 10 yrs or more like myself then this is half true! Coral can go in from day one if you have experience it won't suffer from the cycle the way fish or inverts will, I started my most recent tank with live rock that had coral on it including an sps coral that was encrusted on the rock it came from an old system(yrs old), started with live sand (dormant bacteria that becomes live) also the live rock and dosed bacteria (dormant as well) for the first 2 weeks every day then once a week after that. I have also had a nano that I just upgraded which had coraline algae after only 1.5 weeks in. I had very, very little algae and all the coral are doing great.

Canadian Infidel I think your experience supports what I mentioned, and I agree completely 😊 Like not having a sterile tank (live rock, old system media), seeing coraline algae, etc. Like you mentioned, my goals with this video was to be like a “checklist” for beginners just starting out - every tank is started in different ways and the timeline varies due that! Thanks for watching and sharing your experience 🙏

Nitrite is not harmful to saltwater. Has to be way above 400ppm for it to be harmful. (Freshwater: yes, nitrite is just as harmful) in saltwater, once you get zero ammonia, thats it..

So... I'm new to this salt water thing... I have always been fresh water. I tried salt once before. It lasted no time lol this time has proven different. I filled my tank mixed my salt and I used the aragalive sand. Let it settle. I stirred it a few times to get the cloudy stuff completely filtered out. A few days later I had my levels checked. They were perfect. Added a few damsels. It has been about 3 weeks and everything still looks great! The damsels are thriving, fat, and happy! I've got a small diatom outbreak but it hasn't gotten any worse in the course of a week. I am building my aquascape and will be adding a bottle of turbo start 900 live bacteria to help cover the dry rock I install. I don't remember it being this easy!! Years ago when I tried salt water... my damsels died almost immediately. Levels were perfect. I managed to save one though! He went into a 2.5 gallon on the bathroom counter. He lived in it forever! I could manage a 2.5 gallon salt tank but not a 55 😂 that's just my luck lol hopefully this time is different!!! So far it looks promising! Thank you for the great content!

sigh, I allowed my tank to cycle a month and 4 days since Sept 25th and my parameters aren't the best I have done water changes, bought water Imagitarium I believe it's called but my ammonia is 0, ph 8, nirtite is at .50, and nitrate 20-40ppm.. I have 6 nass snails, 3 red lgs an 1 astria snail and 2 very small tomato clowns. it's a 55g I am losing faith but I have seen so many vids and done so much research. what can i do to lower nitrite and nitrates? I have used prime I do not have sump no space, no skimmer, only hob filter 75g and thinking of adding another. I added fluval max pro, or pro max smh in the filter as well. I also have many other additives I just do not like to over do. I have ammonia alert it is stable on safe constantly. what do you recommend?
@QueenofReef
@QueenofReef 3 года назад
I know it’s frustrating in the beginning but don’t lose hope! Sounds like your tank hasn’t cycled yet - nitrite should not be showing up in the testing. Nitrite will gradually turn to nitrate. To lower nitrate, do a water change 30% once a week until you see some improvement 😊 Seeing nitrate is totally normal at this stage, I would avoid using additives generally. Once your tank fully cycles, and nitrates aren’t going down with water changes, I would look into other filtration options but at this stage just keep an eye on parameters, keep feeding, and do weekly water changes 🙂

Great video, I have been in the aquaria hobby for over 15years (freshwater only). I was ready to move to the amazing world of reefing and just set up my 1st 75gal reef tank. I am currently In the cycle faze. My question is from the day I fill my tank with water to the time I add my first coral, how long would you say that I should allow my tank to mature? A lot of people have said that when you start growing coroline algae then you can start to add corals. I guess I want to know how long will that be? Should I plan on a solid year before adding my first coral or could I get by in 4-6months? Thanks
@QueenofReef
@QueenofReef 3 года назад
Welcome to the saltwater world!! Happy to hear you took the plunge! To answer your question, it depends on when your tank starts showing the signs mentioned so it’s hard to say specifically because it’s different for everybody. It can take anywhere from ~1.5 to 3 months to see these signs typically! This was the most exciting part for me when I first started because you notice your tank going through all these changes during this time, it’s a fun ride 😃

@QueenofReef
@QueenofReef 4 года назад
Melain Kinney I’ve used purigen in the past and it does work well - if your tank needs it! Media should only be added to either fix a problem you’ve encountered and found the source to (like high nitrates/phosphate) or as part of regular maintenance to keep your tank water parameters stable (like you need extra filtration that water changes alone don’t keep in check- media can be used as part of regular routine to keep your levels correct). I don’t recommend using any media if it’s not directly addressing your water parameters, but with that being said, it sounds like you added too much at once and it shocked the system. When measuring out media, less is better if you’re unsure - can always add more later if your water parameter issues are unresolved!

@QueenofReef
@QueenofReef 2 года назад
Two weeks is rushing the process and I wouldn't do it imho - some fish stores tend to rush people into it so they can sell more stuff (esp if it dies). 12 months is the longer end, but I would do 1 month then CUC (only after noticing cycling process finished), 1 month later then fish, 1 month after that first (easy) coral at minimum. Take your time, this tank will be set up for years. The more patience you have during the cycling phase the more success you'll have long term!
