Episode 5 features Pakhawaj recital by Pt. Ravi Shankar Upadhyay.
Pandit Ravi Shankar Upadhyay is a reputed Pakhawaj player of the country belonging to the 400-year-old Pt. Vasudev Upadhyay Parampara (tradition) of Gaya, Bihar. Representing the 14th generation of musicians of his family, he had his training from his father late Pandit Ram ji Upadhyay, a renowned Pakhawaj exponent. He is a ‘Top Grade’ artist of All India Radio.
Pakhawaj is one of the ancient rhythmic instruments of India primarily used as an accompanying instrument to Dhrupad style of Hindustani Classical music. Chautaal is an ancient Taal (rhythmic beat cycle) and has a division of 12 Matras (beats). The Bols (rhythmic pattern) of Chautaal are: Dha Dha | Din Ta | Kit Dha | Din Ta | Te-te Ka-ta | Ga-di Ga-na. Aditaal is an adaption in Hindustani Classical system from one of the most popular Taals of Carnatic Music. It is a 16 beat cycle and its Bols are: Dha Dhe-te Dhe-te Dha | Dha Dhe-te Dhe-te Dha | Dha Te-te Te-te Ta | Te-te Ka-ta Ga-di Ga-na. In Pt. Upadhyay's tradition, it is played with a slight variation in 8 beat cycle: Dha Dhe-te Dhe-te Dha | Ta Dhe-te Dhe-te Dha | Kat Dhe-te Dhe-te Dha | Te-te Ka-ta Ga-di Ga-na.
