Born in a family of traditional musicians of Bhagalpur Gharana, Pt. Santosh Nahar has established himself amongst the leading Violin Players of Hindustani Classical music. He was inducted into Violin by his Guru & father Prof. Prahlad Prasad Mishra and received guidance from his uncles Pt. Kedar Nath Mishra and Pt. Ram Naresh Mishra, and also his elder brother Pt. Sangeet Nahar and Dr. Sahitya Nahar. He has received practical and technical training of Violin playing from Shri T. M. Patnaik. He is a ‘Top Grade’ artist of All India Radio.
Describing the Raga Basant Mukhari Santoor Legend & Composer Pandit Bhajan Sopori says that this raga is an adaptation from Carnatic music into Hindustani Classical music. The raga gives an essence of Raga Bhairav in its Poorvang (first half of an octave) and Raga Bhairavi in its Uttarang (second half of an octave). With regard to its placement into a Thaat Paddhati (scale system), Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande placed this raga into Bakulabharan Thaat but according to Sangeet Tarangini Granth, it is placed in Mukhari Thaat. However, according to Hindustani Thaat Paddhati, the dominance of Bhairav Ang (style) places this raga into Bhairav Thaat. According to Sangeet Tarangini it can be sung and played anytime but as per the time theory of Indian Classical music, it has been categorized as a predawn raga.
