The Samaritans are a tiny ethnic-religious community dating back almost 3,000 years - and they are a population in crisis. But perhaps not for long. Marriage agencies in Ukraine have arranged for more than a dozen women to marry into the Samaritan community in Palestine.
Many Samaritans live in a mountain village near Nablus in the occupied West Bank and face a worrying numbers problem. There are only 800 surviving Samaritans, where once they were counted in their thousands. Men outnumber women by three to one. Their custom is that a young Samaritan man can only marry a woman from within the community if he has a sister who he can offer as a bride in return.
Faced with a fight for survival, a Samaritan religious leader changed the rules to allow Samaritan men to marry women from abroad. While some traditional Samaritans initially resisted the arrival of several Ukrainian brides into this close-knit community, the women are adapting to their new surroundings and providing a population lifeline to this small community.

@@2degucitas yes, they'll look first for a Jewish partner (don't need to convert since the culture, tradition and beliefs are the same except for the Mount Gerizim thing), for a Palestinian one the partner needs to abandon their family and everything and embrace the Samaritan faith, culture, etc... Thus being said, the Palestinian can't see again their relatives nor let their kids visit their relatives in order to preserve the identity as Hebrews (or Israelites) with no foreign intervention... The Bible tells the story of the Good Samaritan where a traveler who was stripped of clothing, and left half dead . First a Jewish priest, then a Levite comes by, but both avoid the man. But a Samaritan took pity, bandaged his wounds, put him on his donkey, took him to an inn, gave the innkeeper money to care for him. He even said he would reimburse the innkeeper for any extra expenses. Lu 10:25-37 Question is - which of these 3 was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers? Loved this documentary! I think Ukrainian women & their culture can adapt more easily into the Samaritan culture because the cultural norms & values of both societies are more closely aligned. Many American men have not achieved the same success because many don’t understand the Ukrainian culture. I have a financially successful cousin who twice went to the Ukraine and has not achieve success in marriage. I believe it is because the women whom he chose expected to have a more family values than he could provide simply because he didn’t understand what was important to those women. Thus both marriages didn’t survive. Both marriages ended in divorce and the women returned home to the Ukraine. I felt sorry for my cousin as I know he is a good man of character. Obviously he has insecurities about himself because I didn’t understand how he couldn’t find an American woman . I found that sad for him. I hope that the couples and families highlighted in this documentary are still enjoying the fruit of their marriages! I have always loved the story related in the Bible of The Good Samaritan. And that resonated in listening to the elder Samaritan grandfather sitting with his granddaughter doing lessons together! If it is proper for this 🇺🇸 grandmother I wish you “Shalom”!

Samaritans Ethnicity Description Samaritans or Samaritan people are members of an ethnoreligious group originating from the Israelites of historical Israel and Judah. They are native to the Levant and adhere to Samaritanism, an Abrahamic, monotheistic and ethnic religion in the Holy Land. @dyawr the fact that the Ukrainian women view living in the west bank aa better tells you what you need to know about Ukraine. That being said, the Samaritans have a very unique and somewhat enviable position in that they get preferential treatment from both sides of the conflict. If I were to marry someone from the holy land, it would be a Samaritan. Seems like an OK set up, if you can tolerate the religious conversion. And I don't love how it seems a lot of the women weren't told how extreme some of the beliefs are, like them having to live in a separate room once a month while menstruating and that type of thing. If they don't mind it that's one thing, but it's hard to fully be truly consenting to something if you didn't actually get really told was the reality.

🤭 You can imagine this is just a presentable, general insight into their lives... personal affairs & marriage are usually more complicated than this. And we're not seeing the whole-whole story, just a few min from 3-4 couples. What I can tell you is that, from what I know, there is a real culture in Ukraine of marrying young & the girls/women there, see it as a natural progression (early) in life. - like going to school, graduating & then getting a job and marrying. 🤷‍♀️ So, it's not uncommon in the Slavic world in general, (particularly North-Eastern Slavs I think - like Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Moldova), to see many women marrying at 20-21-22-23 - around that age. Sometimes even 19.

Interesting documentary. Why don't the men find brides from the middle East, Arabic, Kurdish, Turkish etc communities? And what of the young Samaritan women, are they allowed to marry put? How do they feel? The Jews have succeeded as a people because over the centuries you can see they did marry outside the community. Also, Jewishness is passed on through the mother. Maybe the Samaritan need to give their women more freedom too if they wish to grow as a community.
