SAME OLD MAN (1971) by Karen Dalton

'Same Old Man' appears to be a variation of one of my favourite songs, 'Old Man At The Mill', done by various people such as Ian Matthews, the Dillards and Doc Watson. This is the slowest version, but I like it too, particularly Karen Dalton's unusual voice (some raise similarities with Billie Holiday's).
A cult singer, 12-string guitarist, and banjo player of the New York 1960s folk revival, Karen Dalton is not widely known, despite counting the likes of Bob Dylan and Fred Neil among her acquaintances (see photo of them in the slideshow). She only recorded a few albums and her voice was not what you would call mainstream. The Band's "Katie's Been Gone," included on The Basement Tapes, is rumoured to be about Dalton.
Her albums are available at places such as Amazon. I have put together a slideshow video for this song.
Comments and ratings are welcome.
In the meantime, here is a version of Old Man at the Mill I did on my other channel:

What a hauntingly beautiful voice! Tragic life... tears...

OMG...the imagery of the video and the lyrics of the song and the soulful voice of Karen Dalton almost bring back to life old memories of the rural South. You see the old struggles of life then and now. So many of us have forgotten our roots and this video has captured the visceral nature of a tortured past era. Do ghosts still travel dirt roads and tread on the squeaky rough planks of those old houses? This is an incredibly sentient video, a profound example of videographic art capable of resurrections of past lives and the soulful emotions of aging lives.

Thirty some odd years ago I found Karen's In My Own Time in a bargain bin at Zellers with a hole punched through the corner. The liner notes said she played banjo and had a Fred Neil quote about her "singing the shit out of the blues", so I decided to give it a shot. I immediately became a fan, but could not convince anyone else to listen past the first cut. I never heard any more about her till about 5 years ago I was in the Only restaurant in Peterborough, Ontario and heard her voice.

Karen Dalton was a pretty amazing artist and I'm glad that more of her music has been unearthed and is out there for us. I wish that she was around to enjoy the popularity that she, inevitably finds when people hear her records...

PETER STAMPFEL: She was the only folksinger I ever met with an authentic “folk” background. She came to the folk music scene under her own steam, as opposed to being “discovered” and introduced to it by people already involved in it. By 1960, there were a number of young folksingers who had listened to folk music all their lives, but that was due to the academic, bohemian, professional, or political orientation of their parents. Karen was the real thing.

It's the same old lady, hangin' out the wash Standin' in the rain, in her mackintosh Same old lady standin' in the rain And I thought New York was goin' insane Hey little leaf, layin' on the ground Now you're turnin' slightly brown Why don't you get up on the tree Turn the color green the way you oughta be My mind is fadin', my body grows weak Lips won't form the words I speak I'm floatin' away on a barrel of pain New York City won't see me again Same old man, sittin' at the mill Mill-wheel turnin' of its own free will I'm certainly glad to be at home New York City continues all alone

@Esqpainting It's a long neck 5string banjo, 3 extra frets means it can be tuned low, (open E is usual) Pete Seeger invented it, I play one now. Check out also Hedy West on here, she played a long neck banjo, a contemporary of Karen Dalton, she recorded "Old Country" tunes and also had a distinctive voice

@thisismyname007 Could be that Australian instrument the didgeridoo -- sounds like it to my ears. I know in Karen's day there weren't too many synths and effects applied to folk music. Must be an acoustic instrument and that Australian one fits the bill. In those days "hippies" were experimenting with many instruments from foreign countries -- especially since George Harrison introduced the sitar. I think it sounds great in this song. Makes it different from others.

The Blues in the raw. Call it folk, call it country, call it anything you like, but this lady sang the blues, so blue, your hairs stand up on end. Music is life, a friend told me, “life is sad, life is a bust, all you can do, is do what you must”, she did, because life was a bust, Bob Dylan said, “like Bessie Smith, Billy Holiday, Karen took it all the way”. He was a fan Not surprising really, she sang way better than Bob with more gut feeling. We lost her way too early.

"The Hillbilly Holiday" Peter Stampfel "She is the only singer I have heard as good as Billy Holiday; in fact ,in some ways she's better than Billy Holiday"-Lacy J. Dalton. "it would take a poet to describe her. All know is; she sure can sing the shit out of the blues."-Fred Neil

It's a great and memorable track, though I fail to hear much resemblance to Billie Holiday in vocal styling or timbre. Gloomy Sunday: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YxMs2Y4jvXk.html

As I went out on one morning for pleasure Found a young cowboy riding along His hat was throwed back and his spurs was a-jingling As he approached he was singing this song Whoopi ti yi yo, git along little dogies Your misfortune ain't none of my own Whoopi ti yi yo, git along little dogies You know Wyoming will be your new home Early in the springtime we round up the dogies [Poke] 'em and brand 'em and bob off their tails Get off the horses and hitch up the chuckwagon Then threw the dogies out on the trial Whoopi ti yi yo, git along little dogies Your misfortune ain't none of my own Whoopi ti yi yo, git along little dogies You know Wyoming will be your new home
