Sammy Davis performs his big world-wide smash hit recording of "The Candyman" in this 1972 clip. The song was written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley and featured in the film "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" the previous year, 1971. A great memory....

Thanks for putting it up! It was a blast. My parents had a player piano when I was growing up and this my favorite song to play on it. To make it work, each song had a paper scroll roll with holes punched in them, you put the scroll of a particular song in the piano and the song plays, I guess it was kind of like a punch card computer. On the song roll the lyrics were printed on the right and scrolled down as the song played. So I learned the words to Candyman and other songs that way. We were a hit at the talent show, I think mainly because we threw candy into the audience at the end :) I never saw the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory until I was an adult, just somehow missed that one growing up. I was amused to learn that's where Candyman came from.

In 1975 Cable TV was available mostly in smalltown areas where it brought in extra channels from neighboring markets as well as offering a local channel televising town council mtgs and other community interest programs. There were no premium movie channels (HBO, SHO) or basic cable channels (MTV, COM) or pay-per view offerings then. Cable TV was still in its infancy.

I heard he hated this song. Understandable because I’d imagine that it would get old having to perform the same song at every single concert for the rest of your career. However, he kept doing it and performing it at 100% because he realized how much his fans loved it. That shows you how much he loved his fans. To perform a song he didn’t like just so they could go home from his concerts happy.
