That backstory was not correct. The song was based on an incident that happened to Sammy while he was driving from Albany, New York to Lake Placid. According to Sammy himself, "I was in a rent-a-car that wouldn't go much faster than 55 miles an hour.....cop stopped me for doing 62 on a four lane road when there was no one else in sight. Then the guy gave me a ticket. And he said, 'We give tickets around here for over-60.' and I said, 'I can't drive 55.' I grabbed a paper and a pen, and I swear the guy was writing the ticket and I was writing the lyrics. I got to Lake Placid, I had a guitar set-up there. And I wrote that song there on the spot."
I watched an episode of his show on AXS when he told that story. I seen him on Daryl Hall's show Live at Daryl's House on AXS n they said Eddie was lobbying for Daryl Hall to replace David Lee Roth at first.

@@johnyoung4561 Oh yeah, "call it, heavy metal..." That's right! The title song was the first one to come to my mind. edit: I was thinking of the theme song
Sammy is my absolute favorite live performer! I've seen him in concert 23 times over the last 38 years, and no two shows were alike. He would often play the first 3 or 4 songs on the setlist, then basically take requests from his solo/Montrose/Van Halen catalog for the rest of the show, even if it was one of his songs from wayyyy back (he once played Plain Jane for us because we wanted to hear it, even though he hadn't played that song in nearly ten years, and it sounded awesome). He constantly played longer than most venues allotted (which was generally 90 minutes, he usually played for 2-3 hours and paid hefty fines to do so). People threw handmade posters and signs onto the stage and he'd hang them all over the place as he performed. A real shoot-from-the-hip spontaneity guaranteed at each show....he LOVES to interact with his fans and it really shows. He once found out that a long-time fan was bringing his deaf teenaged son to a show here in Portland OR, and hired a woman to stand at stage left in front of the young man and interpret in sign language the lyrics to every song. That's where the hubby and I learned to sign "mental masturbation" LOL You can't leave a Sammy concert without a smile on your face!
@@Kylora2112 It was bullshit, like most stuff that comes out of DC. One size fits all legislation, like a speed limit that works in New York would apply to the open roads of Utah that had a speed limit of 80 mph
@@gotham61 Huh. It must've been a few years before the manufacturers changed the speedos back, because there were a lot of cars from the 80s with 85 MPH speedos. I'm pretty sure my family had a few of them. The thing about it limiting the cars' speed was sarcasm.
He sold it a few years ago. The car that inspired it was his 1968 Shelby GT500KR. He sold it at the Barret Jackson auction in Scottsdale, AZ. He named it, "The Red Rocket".

This is a fun song that becomes EPIC when they did it live with Van Halen; Sammy and EVH perform a guitar duel for this song and "There's Only One Way to Rock." Truly blazing guitar demonstration. Just imagine when Sammy Hagar (a fine guitarist in his own right) and Eddie Van Halen slug it out on stage. It's just breathtaking.
Sammy was already an established rock frontman when he joined Van Halen. His band Montrose from the mid 70's had a bunch of great rockers, my favorite being "Bad Motor Scooter"
i was forced to work my holiday and was heading inm my saturn on the 280 singing along with sammy on this, 5am alone on the road. eek ticket for doing 70. funnier now than then but what the hell
My brother in law went Daytona 500 and Sammy and his wife were sitting right behind them and talked them the whole time. My brother in law never acknowledged who he was even though Sammy introduced himself as Sammy. Pretty cool. He thought Sammy would would want a normal day out with his wife. That's how my brother in law is. Very thoughtful of others.
Okay Jamel. Sammy had a great solo career before joining Van Halen. He is also an amazing song writer and guitar player. He wrote an amazing song about being born. It's called Eagles Fly. You should check that one out. It shows off just how good of a song writer and singer he really is.
Fun fact: Claudio, the mechanic at the beginning of the video, is a real person, the supercar mechanic to the stars in Los Angeles. It was actually Claudio's idea for Sammy Hagar to join Van Halen. Both Sammy and Ed have been known for decades as serious car guys, and both of them were Claudio's clients. Ed brought his car into Claudio for service, and he was griping about how David Lee Roth had just quit the band, and Claudio said, "Hey, I just saw Sammy Hagar the other day. Why don't you call him?" The rest is rock history.
I know this won’t be popular but there are some great Van Hagar songs. “Finish What You Started” is a cool acoustic song showing a different side to Ed’s playing, and it is no less impressive.

I believe Sammy Hagar made his early solo albums back to 1976. I first saw The Red Rocker on his "Standing Hampton" tour in 1982 (my freshman HS year). He played ChicagoFest on his "Three Lock Box" tour the next summer. He sang, played guitar, jumped over a car, and climbed the scaffolding rigs. My friends & I saw him through his first several Van Halen tours. So much fun! For the haters, we also saw Van Halen with David Lee Roth prior to him leaving the band after the 1984 tour. I still have t-shirts for both 1982 Sammy & 1984 DLR.
Thanks for reacting to our Red Rocker Sammy Hagar! People cover a lot of David Lee Roth Van Halen Era and don’t react to the Sammy Hagar Van Halen era much which was my favorite. Sammy is just a Rock n Roller through and through. His live shows are a blast! Sammy is just a down to earth chill guy. React to his “mas tequila” video, thats what a Sammy Hagar show is like!! Oh Jamel, You gotta do Sammy Hagar when he was in the band Montrose! He was the lead vocals and Ronnie(Montrose) was the main guitarist, and what an iconic guitarist he was! "Rock Candy" and "Bad Motor Scooter" would probably be the most popular choices. Montrose was a great band.

My dad loved the video with van Halen that was a breathtaking tribute to the blue angels. My father was a man that was nothing but old school country - but he listened to it and enjoyed it. That says a lot!
He has so many great solo tunes. Eagles Fly and Give To Live are 2 inspirational songs. Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy, I'll Fall In Love Again, Mas Tequila, Little White Lies and High Hopes are a few others. With Van Halen he has a lot of videos. Dreams, Feels So Good and Can't Stop Loving You are some of them. Right Now is a must watch video.

As the national speed limit was reduced to 55 in 1974 Sammy Hagar actually wrote this song years before. I saw him perform it as the 'Red Rocker'when he was opening for Boston in 1977.
I saw Sammy in 1974 Redlands High school football field no charge. At that time his hit song was *RED* don't know if you can even find it these days. A long lost fav.
This is from the first and only Sammy Hagar album that I've ever bought. I still have it. President Richard Nixon lowered the national speed limit to 55 MPH back in the day. I believe that is the true beginnings of how this tune was made.
My brother.... Sammy is awesome. In concert, he’s phenomenal!! Seen him 5 times with Van Halen and they are just legendary. Energetic, funny, great singer, ... just great.
I was 17 when this song came out. I felt so much relief after 10 years of agony from my family of having to drive so slow on the interstate. So, finally maybe there was going to be a change!
The guy who played the cheif mechanic is both Sammy and Eddie's mechanic; and got them in touch with each other. Claudio also has quite a history himself! And the car from Knight Rider, '82 Pontiac Firebird.
You have to understand the time period....it was after the Arab oil embargo, and President Carter lowered the speed limit from what was in some places 75 to 55 Nationwide. Everybody hated it, so this song was in reaction to that.
True story. 1985 driving back to school after visiting mom for the weekend. Going through some S curves on Highway 62 east of Central City Kentucky listening to this song.
