Sammy Sosa Corked Bat Incident (Full At-Bat & The Aftermath)

June 3, 2003, Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Chicago Cubs
Sammy Sosa uses a corked bat in a game against the Devil Rays and is ejected and suspended for 8 games. He appealed his suspension, and it was reduced to 7 games. The MLB confiscated 77 other Sosa bats and x-rayed them, and no cork was found in any of them.
For context: At the time of the incident, Sammy had just returned from the disabled list after having missed 17 games. This was his fourth game back from injury, and in the first two games back, his timing was way behind his normal timing after all the time off. In his first game back, on May 30, he went 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts, and in his second game back, on May 31, he went 1 for 7 with 5 strikeouts.

U have to understand that the image you see on your television is from video cameras. Now a video camera only shows you what it's lens sees, so if you stop for one second and use the overcooked noodle which you call a brain, maybe to can realize that Mark Grudzielanek saw more that what the camera lens picked up? @mellowphantpi9168 2 года назад
It has less inertia, yes, but an athlete of that size/strength/experience values the extra speed of the bat that less mass gives (he can use body mass to provide plenty of power) over extra mass. He was after higher bat speed and some extra bounce. It’s the same with many young pool players. When the player is young, the player is much less fundamentally sound (and in many cases physically smaller), so a heavy breaking cue will often provide more power transfer during the break. But, when that pool player refines his or her breaking technique a little (incorporating some body mass), it has been shown that the lighter the cue, the faster the breaking speed (with ideal fundamentals). This is due to achieving a higher cue speed via a lower cue mass (made up for with body mass).
@mellowphantpi9168
@mellowphantpi9168 2 года назад
I should’ve said “with good fundamentals“ instead of “with ideal fundamentals“. This is because one doesn’t have to improve their technique vastly to achieve a better break with a lighter break cue.

Hendog so he was an amazing rookie. He looked on track for an elite career, when he started having issues with muscles. It was a while before they diagnosed a mitochondrial disease. He hung in, even w/ limited playing time, & helped the terrible Devil Rays transform into the great Rays of today. Sometimes you'd see him trembling due to loss of muscle control, especially in later innings. But he was a vital part of a Rays team that went from being literally the worst in '07 to the World Series in '08. He didn't play much those seasons due to health, but he came in late summer & took calm control of the team. He made a couple huge, clutch hits that won the ALCS. In the World Series, (against my Phillies!,) the Rays were outmatched. They were a season too early. But they played well. Baldelli made an incredible double play in game two, and an incredible gutsy home run in game five to tie the game. I was rooting for the Phillies but came away with even more respect for Baldelli, as did many Phillies fans. I actually cheered when he hit that home run! Despite his tenure with the Rays being cut short, he is still a franchise legend, and by all accounts, a really good guy.
