Travel along with Joe as he visits Samson Harness Shop in Gilbert, Minn. Bernie Samson has been hand making leather harness for over 45 years.
Joe visits his shop where Bernie shows us all the steps along with his specialized machine tools for producing show harness, farm harness and pulling harness.
First he explains the cow hide and what parts are used for the strength needs of harness parts as well as the other parts. He makes harness in leather dyed black, brown or un-dyed, which he calls russet. He cuts the leather for us . an explains how even the smallest scraps can be used - for buckle safes as an example.
He shows us his collection of molds for cutting blinders.
He then shows us a power creaser, cruper molds and cruper stuffer and the process of making cruper (which he stuffs with flax seed).
The leather folding is next, which forms beautiful and comfortable hames.
Next. a spotting machine for setting chrome, stainless steel and brass studs and rivets for decoration.
Lastly Bernie walks us through the entire process of making reins.
1 . Round breaking (making a permanent crease in the leather strip.
2 Stitching machine which sews the folded piece including a filler strap inside.
3 . Running the piece through a pre-rounder to give int a nice shape.
4 . Trimming off the seam down to the stitching with a hand tool.
5 . Blacking to dye the cut edge and overall finish the piece.
6 . Finish roller to smooth and round the final piece out.
