Stitching Thick Leather On A Sewing Machine. Sewing two and three layers of saddle skirting leather. You may notice that I did hit a stainless steel dee with the machine needle and it bent the needle slightly but was able to finish the sewing.

This is my dream machine.

It looks simple and easy when an expert does it, but SO many things have to be right before that can happen. Right sewing machine, right needle, right thread, right tension setting, right stitch length, right speeds, and years of experience learning what those are, and how to do it. Not even to mention maintaining and adjusting the machine for peak performance. And it takes skill, confidence, and bravery to sew afterward on work that has been so long and painstakingly tooled and carved, that could all be ruined in an instant through a sewing mistake. You have my respect, sir! You have bent a needle? Nobody will ever know or care because the result was perfect.

Really wish you had some sort of an online shop for smaller leather pieces for viewers in different states. I love your leatherwork!

Bruce, if you were buying your sewing machine again would you stick with Cowboy or go with a Cobra? I believe you mentioned somewhere that your brother uses a Cobra machine in his shop.

Hi Bruce, which sewing machine do you think is better, Cowboy CB4500 or Cobra Class 4? Thanks Joe
@cheaneysaddles
@cheaneysaddles 5 месяцев назад
I think it is what you get used to using. My brother has several of the Cobra's plus my daughter has a Cobra and they get along fine with their machines. The only way I can answer is that I would not trade my machine for one of theirs. Thanks for asking good question!

A random question ( seldom answered.......) why is it that these machines and similar machines pull the lock down on tight corners. The lock shows down ( on the underside) on a few stitches and then evens out again. Top and bottom tension have nothing to do with this problem. Thanks. Didnt know where to ask so..... took a chance :)
@cheaneysaddles

I do think needle size and thread size do play a role in how my machine sews and works on corners.

@@cheaneysaddles Thank you for your prompt reply Bruce. We also find that the combination between needle and thread size is a telling point. But like in life there are always variables that sneak up :) We are using 180s Schmetz needles and Ticket 8 ( 346 ) thread and at present it seems to be behaving with a smaller stitch hole . That is what we are aiming for continually. Thanks again ( from Cape Town )

You mention you're using polyester thread. Could you use nylon, instead of polyester thread, as well?
@cheaneysaddles
@cheaneysaddles Год назад
Yes, absolutely it sews about the same with nylon thread.

What is the needle size
@cheaneysaddles
@cheaneysaddles 10 месяцев назад
200 most of the time with 346 white Polyester thread sometimes a 230 needle on thick stiff leather. My Cowboy machine also works with nylon thread but I really prefer Polyester thread for some reason.
