Samson Q9u Review: A Near Perfect XLR/USB Microphone?

There’s no such thing as an objectively perfect microphone, but as an XLR/USB mic with great sound quality at a reasonable price, I think the Samson Q9u comes very close. This is my in-depth review of the Q9u along with comparisons to the PodMic, SM7B, and MV7.
While I really do like the Shure MV7, in my mind, the Q9u is everything the MV7 should have been and it addresses all of the criticisms from my MV7 review (keeping in mind I'm more interested in XLR functionality than USB).
As you’ll see in the video, I did find one potentially major flaw: when I connected the Q9u to my M1 Mac Mini via USB, I started to get a high pitched whine in the XLR recording on my Rodecaster (this is most easily heard when wearing headphones). This only happened when plugged in to the Mac Mini, and I couldn’t replicate the sound on my MacBook or under any other circumstances. The Shure MV7 never had any issues with interference.
Finally, Samson sent this mic to me at no cost and with no commitment for a review or video. Please take a minute to check out my Ethics Statement to see how I handle any sort of brand collaboration: himynameistom.com/ethics

Hey Tom, did you try removing the cloudlifter from the signal chain when testing XLR and USB? Sometimes phantom power (which cloudlifter requires) can cause issues when used in conjunction with USB devices. Just a thought.

@petervannostrand 3 года назад
Hey Tom, Electrical Engineer here. The high pitched whine you're getting in the Q9U could be from just about anything, but my bet is this: when you have the Q9U plugged into both USB-C on the Mac mini and the Roadcaster pro (which I'm assuming is also connected to the Mac mini via USB) you might be creating a ground loop. Essentially whenever you have electronic devices they need both power and a ground connection, and its common practice to have the grounds from all your devices only connect in one place. This is to ensure that all the ground wires have exactly the same 0V ground voltage. When connecting the Q9U to your Mac via USB AND XLR via the rodecaster you're creating two paths from the microphone to ground: one which is very simple (just a USB cable) and the other via the complex audio equipment found in the rodecaster. This could cause a difference in ground voltage that can create buzzing. If this is the case you might be able to replicate the issue by connecting both the rodecaster and Q9U to your laptop via USB, the rule of thumb then might be to never use both the XLR and USB on the same computer to avoid buzzing. In general though if you're investigating buzzing I'd recommend turning off any power electronics (I'm looking at that sweet Nixie clock on your desk) and checking that all your cables are shielded. Keep up the great videos and bad puns!
@tombuck

Glad to see a very detailed review on such a steal of a mic. I picked up the Samson Q9u the other day for my desk setup since I repurposed my trusty 10+ yr old Rode Procaster for work only, and I am loving it. You cannot go wrong with $169.99 and the fact that it had USB-C until I decide to get another XLR audio interface, was key to my buying decision. No latency. Sounds as if it were plugged via XLR (for my vocals and ears at least.) I cannot wait to use it more and break it in this weekend on a podcast recording session

I came here from searching up MV7 and Q9U comparisons and found your Twitter posts from last year. A great video, I've just bought a Q9U based on the video. I'll be using it over USBC exclusively for quite a while before I get a mixer. I've got a fairly deep voice so that mid boost should help it not be so deep and take some muddiness out compared to my current Yeti + Voicemeeter set-up.

I run into these sound artifacts with Macs and dj mixers sometimes. For me, 9/10 times it’s the most subtle ground loop/hum from the wiring, If your computer is on a power conditioner, or even one of those .99 cent ground lift (which removing introduces a whole bunch of other potential issues and safety) you might skirt it. Even if you just try it, you can then rule-out/point blame to the Mac’s ground. Excellent review !

Thanks for the suggestion! It's clearly related to the Mac's power supply, so I'll need to do some more digging.

Wow, this was intense. Great review as always, I listened through couple dif. headphones and I believe I could really get a grip of the caracter of the sound. Compared to the SM7B I hear a touch of a boost on the mids, might be in the real midrange like 400-500 Hz ( don't have a clue what I'm talkin' about, it's my Mackie mixer's manual I'm reading), no but really, it's a tad less bassy than the Shure, adds some nice clarity to the voice and it's actually a very pleasant mic to listen to. I've got enough mics in my studio but seems like I could recommend it further on. That will come with a link to this video :-)

Tom, my new mic is arriving today. Thank you for your thorough reviews. I am bugged by something I have to say. The screws you use to tighten the tension in your PSA1 don’t work to tension. They might seem that way, but they’re just small machine screws holding on those decorative black covers. The ones at the mic end hold the mechanism on the end of the arms. Tightening them may pinch the arm ends and help a little, but that depends on wear and tolerances. Mid arm, the one you tightened, pull one of those off and look closely while you move the arm. Nothing will fall out. You will see, it does nothing to provide tension. It’s just a screw holding the decorative cover on. Your desire makes it tighter. I’m afraid someone trying real hard to tighten that, may end up with a puncture wound from opposing hand pressure and a screwdriver slipping. I love your reviews.
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 года назад
Interesting, thanks for the info and congrats on the mic! tightening the screw closest to the connector has always helped me to adjust tension, but it may in fact just be adding/removing friction on the arm...and now that I look at it more closely, that does seem to be the case. 🤔
@danielpaulson8838
@danielpaulson8838 2 года назад
@@tombuck I have seen others post it as a fix, but it's not really tightening anything that ads friction to the flex joint. It's kind of a head scratcher that it would work any at all. Perhaps the analysis is incomplete. I have used weights from SmallRig to hold down a light mic. And wrapped the parallelogram arms when close together with black velcro cable ties. I experiment with those and they hit a point where they get tight and the sagging stops. I use a Blue stand too. Also thanks to you. 😀 I think I told you before, I like to hear your voice on the mics. The radio voice guys can't hit the part of the mic where my voice resides. They all sound so similar. Your voice showcases a mid to low and I need to hear that. Bandrew and Curtis are mid range and that is helpful too. I have a Podmic after watching your videos and love it. The Q9U is still on the delivery wagon. Thanks as always, Tom. I love your style.

Yet another great review on a mic that is currently my secondary (my SM7B being the primary). I returned my PodMic to get this one and I don't regret it. In the future, could you possibly review upcoming mics via other sources such as a budget audio interface (maybe a Scarlett Solo?) or something to that extent? I think a lot of mics sound different (and incredible) on a $599 RODECaster vs. a $85ish audio interface. Don't get me wrong, the RODECaster is really really nice. But I think there are a considerable amount of mic users who plug their XLR cables into something more budgetary. Again, thanks for the content Tom!

I did a little testing on my setup with the USB/XLR and here's what I found. First, the setup: Rodecaster Pro connected by USB-C to my MacBook Pro Q9u connected by USB-C to my MacBook Pro I wasn't able to duplicate the exact sound you had, but I was able to generate noise when connecting the Q9u via USB-C and XLR, but only in a specific scenario. When I used an inline 48v phantom powered mic activator/preamp (in my case, the SImplySound SS-1, which I purchased before they went out of business), I was able to identify interference, and I was able to duplicate this on multiple channels. If I connected the Q9u directly to the RCP without any mic activator, I was not able to create any noticeable increase in interference or noise floor. Not sure if you were using a Cloudlifter (or similar) when making the video, but maybe there's something similar happening on your end??
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 года назад
Thanks for your tests! Were you using the USB cable that came with the Samson? Looking back, I think I was using a different cable, and I noticed the one that came with the mic has a ferrite core on it, probably to help avoid this issue. It was interesting that the Shure didn't have any problems at all though.
@TopTierAudio
@TopTierAudio 2 года назад
@@tombuck To the best of my knowledge, it was the original Q9u cable. I purchased the mic used on eBay, but it does have the ferrite core. I'd also tested an MV7 and DID have some obvious ground loop interference when using the XLR and USB-A connection simultaneously. However, I'm running a MacBook Pro (welcome to dongle town), so it was connected USB-A to a powered Thunderbolt dock, which also provides power to my computer. Probably not a fair comparison with that many pieces of equipment in the mix. As ti think about it, I will probably also need to review whether all of the connected components are connected to the same electrical circuit. I suppose that could also be an issue.

Hey brother I just want to say God bless you for all of your reviews I just ordered the pod tracks P8 and your review has me so excited to try it out as for the tightening knobs on the mic I watched another review and a guy said they have caps that come off where the tightening knobs would be and there are screws there underneath so that you can tighten it. Maybe check that out and see if that's true. It was a review on a q9u so I will have to look at mine and see what he's talking about. Supposedly there are caps that come off where the tightening knobs are supposed to be and you can take a screwdriver and there's a Phillips head screw in there to tighten or loosen which isn't very convenient compared to a tightening knob but it works nonetheless

In the real world, is there much if any difference using it on USB vs XLR?
@tombuck

Correct. For the XLR portion, it was running into the original Rodecaster Pro. There's really not much of a quality difference between USB and XLR in this case. XLR has the advantage of not requiring a computer and being easy to add multiple mics together, but as far as single mic audio quality goes, they're pretty even.

After watching this video, I have a feeling I'm going to have to try out this microphone and the MV7. I'm not too concerned with the micro-USB as I mainly work with a PC. I would recommend adding an annotation on the MV7 video that takes people here to learn about using an SM7B windscreen as I'm now looking into picking one of those up to deal with the plosives that you had issues with on the MV7.
@tombuck
@tombuck 3 года назад
The SM7B windscreen really does help the MV7 quite a bit. Overall they're both great mics and a lot just comes down to personal preference. I was just so impressed with the Samson that I really couldn't believe how much I liked it.

@tombuck
@tombuck 2 года назад
You really can't go wrong with interfaces, but I'd definitely recommend something that has a decent amount of gain. The Focusrite 2i2 is probably the most popular budget interface to start with, but there are lots of options. The Zoom P4 is a 4 channel recorder/interface with more than enough gain for just about any mic.

Thanks so much for the kind words! Funny story about the Q2u...I was using it for a video I'm currently working on and the USB output completely died on mine. I've never heard of this happening with the mic, but mine is almost brand new and must be defective 🤷🏻‍♂️ Aside from that I think it's a great sounding mic and an awesome value.

Whoa! Your response time is 🤯! Thanks for that. I was excited to read you were (maybe are still? Since it has the XLR capability as well?) using the mic….until I read that it’s defective!! Bummer. I was really looking forward to a full review, specifically for your head on and offset vocal tests on that mic (I saw you do it in the podmic video I believe) as I haven’t found anyone else who does/talks about that. Either way, glad to hear you think it’s a good mic - despite the defect in the one you got. @Dyonysus777
@Dyonysus777 Год назад
Thanks for the info: Nicely orated. OK I took the plunge thanks to your video and bought the Q9U for $184 (hope it's not a copy: Have only a fourtnight to return it). I trusted my ears and from what I heard, including in other videos, the Q9U sounded great. Honestly I can't really hear any difference from the SM7b. I also preferred the neutral mode. I guess the emphasized mode sounded more like Q2U or Shure sm58 for that sake (well not so "Shure" about that but I will get a "Q" later). Questions: 1) Is it impossible to adjust the backing vs the direct monitored sound? I think someone said so somewhere. 2) I am curious to see if plugging the Q9U into my Windows 10 based pc via USB, and using the ASIO4All driver will allow me to choose my piano (connected with yet another USB cable to the pc) as the destination and then the loudspeakers are connected to the piano? I don't have an Audio Interface. The ASIO4all (Steinberg-Yamaha driver since I use Cubase ai 11) allows one to choose other destinations than the microphone itself (because that is the rule (the mic to be both sender and receiver) when using a USB connection to pc. Or was that only valid for the Q2U perhaps? PS: Also see my comment about the Q9X here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AF2u7CaV2vM.html&ab_channel=FreePodcastTools (well I go by Ryan in the comments)
